Ditto Darryl Parkinson's comments. This is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. Period. Short. Concise. Specific. Data points that jump out at the viewer. A gain of 70+ yards by hitting 6 degrees up on the ball instead of 6 down. So clear in the data. My Garmin R10 has been showing me with a consistent -2.5 downward strike on my drives. I thot the R10 was not measuring my swing correctly. For the past 40 years, I've thot I was hitting up on my drives. Not. You've show me precisely why I can't even hit my drives 200 yards (I'm 81, so I'm not expecting tour-level performance). You've shown me precisely what I need to work on and how to work on it. Splendid video. Splendid.

For quite a long time now I have believed that the main focus for me (HI 17) in my quest to hit the ball further should be on working on quality of contact and optimising launch conditions rather than just trying to swing faster. This video is a great demonstration of that. Thanks.
@ChrisRyanGolf3 жыл бұрын
Id agree John even through I haven’t seen your swing. Most golfers I have worked with could get more out of their current swing without adding speed, so I’d say your on the right path
@suryavaraman.42773 жыл бұрын
Truth be told. I swing fast already with a 2i. 100plus mph. But when i use a driver, and i swing too fast, it doesn't go far and slices or tops the ball. Even with a lean back tee high and hitting up into the ball, i fuck up. So I've avoided using driver til now, and working on tempo and compression on ball.

@@ChrisRyanGolf does this work with a flat swing, it's still hard for me to swing up on the driver to reduce backspin, i know what your saying works because my longest Drives of 260 yds came when i hit the Ground behind the ball and the driver popped up on the ball reducing spin and the drives went longer than if i hadn't hit the Ground.
@sixstringsdown13 жыл бұрын
@@matt7iron Can you just continue to move the ball forward in your setup until you hit your optimal numbers? The reason I ask is because at 61, I have been playing only 3 years & also struggle with driver carry! I moved the ball forward until I was hitting up on it, then slowly moved the ball back, while chocking up on the club by about 1/2 inch. I am still by no means a decent driver, but I am slowly gaining distance while also focusing on better contact on the club face. To do this, I took some speed off the downswing, but hope, along with better flexibility routines to eventually get consistent strikes THEN add back more speed slowly... We shall see, I suppose. 🤔
@dwidep3 жыл бұрын
@@matt7iron Try positioning the ball in the front of your stance where you normally would put it, but instead of resting the club where the ball is, rest it in the middle of your stance. Then, when you swing you're just swinging the club instead of actually trying to hit the ball. I'm long and consistent off the tee, but I never try to hit the ball. What I do is try to hit an imaginary ball in the middle of my stance, and the result is that I actually hit the ball at the first part of my follow through. This creates a launch angle. I carry around 275 or so, and my driver is the best part of my game. If I could only learn to chip.

Hey, I took this tip straight to the course and the last 3 days have been my best driving days of the year. All season long I would carry 190 to 210 and this trick brought those distances to between 230 and 250. I had no idea that launching my driver at double the height would give me such a big increase. Now all I need is actual practice which I think will increase that carry distance even more. So great tips!!!

Not sure how the physics works but moving the driver back 1ft-2ft from the ball has cured my slice. The extra distance of 30-40yds, in winter golf, was a bonus. I would include "Fix a Slice" in the header of video to get more hits. Best video I have utilised in years.

Great 'info vid', Chris. Major props! If I may make a supplemental, added suggestion to all golfers of amateur / weekend status ... and that is to MAKE SURE you're arms are not extended at the location of your initial address. If you extend your arms even a bit early, you'll not be striking 'through' the golf ball. You'll be striking up a smidge early, thus putting top spin on the ball which will defeat the purpose of this video lesson. MAKE SURE your arms extend just to the left of your left shoe. In this way your impact will be on a upward path & THROUGH the ball. All this for nought if you fail to get to your left side before impact, of course. My students do wonderfully when they fully understand this very important concept. Keep up the great work, Chris!

Chris, I understand everything you're doing and the factors that come into play to enable the ball to travel further. However, when I tee the ball this high, stay behind it on the downswing, and play the ball that far forward in my stance, I am always afraid of topping the ball. What keeps you in this setup from topping the ball by keeping it so far forward in your stance and swinging up on it? I am using 3 ¼" tees for the driver and teeing it up about as high as I can get it!

I really like your point about the ball being set forward in the stance based on the center of your chest, as opposed to using the heel. I've put in a ton of work with my driver lately, and everyone always says "take a wide stance and line the ball up with your front heel". The problem is that if you go too wide, it becomes almost impossible to effectively shift the weight forward as your legs will be at too steep of an angle. What ends up happening in this scenario is you make contact with the ball while your weight is still closer to the center of your stance, and the club can't actually reach the ball -- this results in topping it. I think your explanation promotes proper balance which is one of the most important things when it comes to golf (and especially driving). If we aren't properly balanced, we won't be able to effectively shift our weight and that leads to horrible swings.

Very good, easy to understand - well done - Making them start the backswing from 2' behind the ball is a clever way of battling the inside takeaway - the #1 cause of slices since the club gets stuck and has no place to return other than outside in (over the top).

I can't give this vid all the credit as I've watched a lot of driver vids but it certainly helped. Proper setup. Proper tee height. Proper ball position. Proper swing plane. Moe Norman was known for setting club head well behind ball at address, and he was one of straightest hitters of the golf ball. Great tip that probably also works on golf course!
@ChrisRyanGolf3 жыл бұрын
He was super straight!!! lots to learn from Moe
@TeddyCavachon3 жыл бұрын
Moe Norman was such a straight ball striker because of the way he aligned his club to target with his wrists locked down in ulnar deviation with face square to target not behind the ball, but on the point on the ground relative to the ball (i.e. about the middle to front of it) where the compressed ball released off face. He also when lining up put his body in the impact position. In other works he aligned everything to target exactly how he wanted everything to be at the moment the ball released off the face. Once that is done you can move the club back behind the ball anywhere because the conscious brain and the subconscious brain both know where the club need to be at the bottom of the swing. By comparison the way golfers are taught to set up at address is insanity for a beginner unless they are also show how to align their club and body to target where both will be as the ball releases. I started doing that when coaching friends with poor swing mechanics this way: 1) Hold the club for them at its nominal loft and shaft angle (as determined by hosel) near middle of ball with face square to target. 2) Have them move body as necessary to move lead arm from side as it hangs naturally (thumb turned inward) and swing it up and onto the grip with arm angled the same as the hosel angles the shaft. Shaft angle at nominal loft dictates where ball winds up relative to feet when they do that. 3) Left hand now on grip I have them bend trail arm 90° and put elbow on body over hip and tell them to put it on the grip. The only way to to that is to side bend, a move most golfer I do this drill with do not know is part of every good ball striker’s swing. 4) When they they manage to do the side bend thing and get right hand on grip I have them turn hips 45° open but keep shoulders parallel because that’s when the hips and shoulders of good ball strikers are to allow the lead arm to fly off the chest toward the target also pulling the lagging club head towards the target. At that point they are in the impact position and for most have a clue and conscious plan where they need to have body and club to hit a powerful shot straight to the intended target for the first time in their golfing exeperience. I have them slowly go in reverse from impact to top of backswing then down again doing the side bend move out of necessity to get back to the impact position seen in photos of the tour pros at the point the ball released off the face. The way the conscious and subconscious brains interact causes the the conscious rehearsal of the move to be executed reflexively when it is repeated, not unlike programming waypoints into a GPS so a plane can fly on auto-pilot. The immediate improvement in swing is always dramatic and smile producing, also producing comments like “It’s that easy? Why didn’t the club pro I took lessons from for ten weeks ever show me this during the first lesson? 😂

I probably maxed out at about 280 yards and I guess under certain conditions could probably get close to 300. This is one of the best videos I have seen to figure out why my attack angle was so low. This is the first time it has made any sense. Can you please tell me what program you are using on your phone to get this information?? Thanks

Thanks Steven, I was using the TrackMan device and the app on my phone to see the data

Very good video. How do I know my launch angle ? Is there any other way to measure? I know I can do the club head cover drill. How much does the computer cost to catch all that data ? Thank you

Thx man. My Driver has been holding me back and I’m tired of it lol. Haven’t tried drill but I’m optimistic on getting this. My driver hasn’t seen the middle of the club head that often. I’d love to see a strike on the bottom. It’s always on the very top. Horrible.

I understand what you're saying I hopefully I can do it I was doing pretty good last year but man I lost my ability to hit the ball straight at the end of the year can't wait to get out there and give it a try great stuff thank you

Super video! Thanks Chris. I particularly like starting the driver 2ft behind the ball

Chris, I just made a similar change to my swing and this match's it. But I only went 15 yards longer, but I am pleased with the result. Thanks Chris

Great tip. Will go to range tomorrow and try. Is that swing measure tool available as an app?

I seem to have the opposite problem. The last range session I went to I was averaging about 148 ball speed but only hitting the ball approximately 230yards. I noticed my launch angle was about 19*. Am I losing distance because of too much loft? Thanks.

Chris, Thank you for this. I am 66 yr old and struggle off the tee. This drill has transformed my tee shots. Brilliant

Hi chris great video i noticed that you didnt tilt your upper body to the right at address or is this not relevant for this drill ?

Fantastic video, great to have a simple drill to try rather than remembering something technical which will be challenging to apply.

I get the correct launch 12-14degrees but cant seem generate more than 135 mph ish ball speed 92-94 mph swing ..seem to be stuck on 225 carry and 250 drives just getting older i guess (55) any tips chris
@ChrisRyanGolf3 жыл бұрын
Thats probably the right amount of ball speed based on the club speed, so it would be a case of trying to increase the club speed to gain a little more distance

@@ChrisRyanGolf thanks chris yes i had a GC Quad launch monitor based lesson last week and was told the same as my smash and accuracy were pretty good .at the end the pro recommended the nearby david lloyd facility meaning the gym i was thinking more like the bar ! i feel the need ....the need for speed !

I've always had a severely negative angle of attack. This is the first time I've seen both practical and repeatable ways to change it. I will give it a try.

Where do you focus your eyes when the head is 2’ behind the ball? Where the club is? On the ball? Or inches in front of the ball?

How do you get that trackman data on your phone ? I would definitely pay for that app and subscription. Thanks !
@ChrisRyanGolf3 жыл бұрын
The app is free for anyone to download, it’s the TrackMan that is the costly bit of kit. You can connect to any device though through the app

Great video, Chris. Kudos on the statistical data backing. My question is with that kind of ball position (forward and high), I find it hard to hit a cut with my driver. If there is a dog-leg right fairway, should I tee the ball back down and a little more center to squeeze a cut? Appreciate your thoughts.

If your club head speed is a lot less, will you still see gains by hitting up on the ball? Will it be a huge difference?
