An Elephant Chase! Mambo Runs After Bubi & the Whole Herd Come to Protect Her

Mambo follows Bubi around, challenging the female, until Bubi has enough and runs away in distress. Mambo chases after her and soon the whole herd reacts, trumpeting and running after the two elephants. They surround Bubi to protect her and make sure the youngest elephants, Khanyisa and Timisa are in the centre of their circle of protection. Mambo flaps his ears on the outskirts… One can only wonder what he’s thinking…

I remember a story years ago about a herd in Africa that was on a reservation of some sort and they separated them so that the teenage boys were all together and no surprise, they became a gang and sort of wrecked havoc everywhere. They eventually had to put adult males and females in the mix with them To put them in their place.

Mambo doesn't care he has to be the bad boy of the herd even though Lundi has taught him better. He is the reason Baby K can't stay with her mother in the homestead, because NOBODY knows what Mambo the trouble maker will do next. 😆

It’s actually common. A typical herd is all female and the little ones. When the boys in the herd get close to teen years, they start causing trouble by challenging, physically pushing primarily the adult females, including their own mothers. (Mambo does it with his mom Lundi.) The ladies then band together and push them out of the herd. It’s a great way to prevent in-breeding.

Since Mambo is in a herd with females and he will stay in that herd and not be run off by the females. I'm sure Sebakwe, Fish, and Jabu will keep him in line if he gets to out of hand.

Even my heart was racing. I am sure they challenge for their place in the herd, but watching the herd rally around the challenged one was just unbelievable. This is definitely where the carers are in danger with the herd running to help from everywhere. You all are absolutely the best at what you do for these animals. That was quite the show. Be safe!!

It was interesting to see Mambo challenging and chasing sweet Bubi, knowing how sensitive and oftentimes skittish she can be. I really felt for her. But, how reassuring for Bubi when the others ran to her rescue. That must have made her feel good. L The HERD'S primary focus was protecting Bubi and Khanyisa and Timisa. One takeaway for me from this chase was a life's elephant lesson for Meisiekind, in seeing her family react to such a situation and being part of her HERD'S trumpet call of immediate assistance. Every such event is part of Khanyisa's learning curve! Thanks all!

I think this is how they work things out in the wild. I like how the rangers allow the elephants to do their thing with a laissez-faire approach and let the herd sort out the trouble.💝🐘💝

There is a reason young bulls get kicked out of wild herds to find their own way when they get into their mid-teens, and they often find an older bull that will teach them about a bull’s role in the world. He is just being a young bull, victim to his own hormones, he is not doing it deliberately, just instinctual. Sometimes they are very similar to young male humans, who show off and try to figure out their place in the world, but make bad decisions. Female elephants will typically spend their lives in their maternal birth herds and so experience life differently to the males, they are more social and tied into the group.

Mambo reminds me of the oldest of my 4 sons. There was quite a lot of similar "sparring" amongst them in their teens. The youngest, who was also the smallest (& at 40, still is), didn't stand a chance in those matches. He has a gentle, loving personality and is a wonderful uncle to the dominant one's 3 daughters. He kinda reminds me of Fishan! ❤🐘❤ The oldest only dominated until the next to the youngest outgrew him. That put an end to their confrontations. It was wild in their teenage years. I was a single mom, so no "older bull" was around to keep them in line as far as agression was concerned.

@FTC, that is exactly what both Emerson and Thoreau taught in their literature concerning man's observation of the natural world. I so loved teaching those two Romantic/Transcendental writers to my high school senior classes. I never had to push the kids to see the importance or relevancy of literature to life with those two authors. How I miss the classroom and the "lightbulbs" that used to switch on so brightly sometimes☺😊 I wish KZbin and HERD had been available to my students and me back in those days. Looking at this clip, it's almost as if he waited for Bubi to begin running, before giving chase - something I've observed in mating behaviour in mature elephants.
