This season is so incredible because of the story and the way it's told. Yukimura (the creator) really showed everyone how good he was with the time jump. "Oh you think I'm a shonen manga creator? Have a whole-ass arc of farming. And you're going to love it."

I saw some people said they dropped the show because its boring and not action packed and not much fighting like the 1st season but, to me, this one is just as good as the 1st one. The dialogues and storytelling are so good that it carried the show just like Roshi said.

Vinland Saga just feels so real man even though it's an anime and sometimes it throws in jokes, it feels raw and human. The way they do dialogue is really nice too, feels natural compared to some other shows It makes sense that an arc diving into that "human" aspect of the series is so rich so far

That fishing moment was so powerful. If you want to change, you need to actively create that change, but not in the way we usually create change. Let your head be empty and fill it with your new goal without distractions. "work" he said. Just keep working on the task at hand with no other thoughts in mind. Throw the net. Then do it again. For a day, for a week, for a month. The longer you go, the less your past life will attempt to return. Eventually you forget who you used to be. You might not even realize you've changed, yet you'll act and think completely differently. Now that I think about it, Thorfinn and Einar make an interesting duo. Thorfinn needs to change inside, and that requires him to let go of a lot of a lot of things and learn all over. Meanwhile, Einar needs change on the outside, and that requires ambitions, motivated action. They're working toward the same goal on the surface, but the way they go about their changes are the opposite.

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 68 to 69. In regards to the passage of time (the manga is sometimes more explicit about the dates) during this episode it’s supposed to be winter now and Lent soon (as Sverkel indicated), so it’s probably meant to be around February-March of 1016, i.e. another few months have passed since the previous episode. A little bit of trivia, the very opening scene of the episode (where Thorfinn is staring at a child version of Einar) is an anime original addition/scene. And to be clear, child Einar in Thorfinn’s dream is just symbolic of the types of people Thorfinn used to pillage and raid as a Viking, as Thorfinn wasn’t directly involved in either of the times Einar’s village was raided in the past (the first time was done by English soldiers, and by the second time Thorfinn had already been sold into slavery as punishment for attacking Canute). Also unfortunately ruining the retainers' wheat fields isn't an option for Einar and Thorfinn to get back at them either. As the retainers don't actually own any farming land themselves, they only work on land that Ketil owns.

"Love" might be too strong of a word, but there was DEFINITELY some kind of bond going on in that moment, even if Thorfinn didn't know it then Yeah, he was angry because he'd never be able to beat him in a duel. But then he was also saying stuff like "You're going to die? *"You?* " It's always stuck with me, because it's like he was in *disbelief*. Like at some point, he'd started to think Askeladd as someone who'd always be there, who'd never be killed

First time reading that scene with the retainers-fight I was surprised that they actually managed to take down Thorfinn so fast (hitting him on the back of his head). On the battlefield as a boy and teenager he was often attacked by more than one person but always managed to dodge. But then I realized he always fought for himself. This was the first fight he actually wanted to look out for someone else, Einar. And that distracted him.

THAT is masterful writing. The entirity of Thorfinn and Einar's conversations this episode are. Also, I believe that his punch at the end is the first time he ever got mad on behalf of someone else and not just for himself, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

It was intentional too. Thorfinn was designed to be a stagnant character in Season 1, which is why it's so wild that people want him to go back to that. While Thorfinn wouldn’t have ever consciously chosen to spare Askeladd if Thorfinn ever hypothetically won a duel, the point is (as Askeladd explained in episode 22 of season 1/chapters 46-47 of the manga) that Thorfinn would never be able to ever win against Askeladd in a duel (and not because of a lack of martial prowess on Thorfinn’s part) because of Thorfinn’s unique relationship with Askeladd. That *because* of stuff like Thorfinn’s trauma-bond, messed up feelings towards Askeladd (including subconsciously viewing him as a father figure), and Askeladd knowing Thorfinn better than anyone else in the world, Thorfinn would specifically never be able to win (and thus kill) Askeladd in a duel (or at least until old age would literally make Askeladd too physically decrepit to win).
@Ash_Wen-li
@Ash_Wen-li Жыл бұрын
It's a valid theory to be honest. I think more important than killing Askeladd, Thorfinn wanted to win the duel with Askeladd to prove Thors was better than him and to make Askeladd admit that. Ironically, Askeladd already agreed that Thors was better than him, which is probably why his last words hit so hard.

I just recently picked up the manga start to finish. This thing with the way MAPPA has handled it is amazing. The manga is great but it's not the show you thought it was....alot of introspective thinking about what someone should do after experiencing a lifetime of trauma by 15. Can't wait to see where it all goes and hope it continues to get the love/numbers it needs.

More than crying, he is stoned, totally incapable of reacting. It makes sense because before we can get angry our brain has to processing what it is happen. Processing the fact that your mother and sister died in front of you may take longer than processing the fact that some assholes ruined your months' hard work…I'think.
