It's actually surreal to see Thorfinn express any bit of emotion or care towards something other than revenge. It reminds me a bit of how he was as a kid before Thors died, but obviously with some maturity and he's much more humble. The evolution of both Thorfinn and Canute has been great this season. I love the progress they're making and I can't wait to see what becomes of Thorfinn and Canute this season.

That's not exactly true. That stigma only existed because no one pushed back against it. When they did, that shit stopped real quick. And the punishment didn't have to be nearly that bad. For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 66 to 67. In regards to the passage of time (the manga is more explicit about the dates) during this episode it’s supposed to be November 1015, so about a month has passed since the previous episode. A bit of historical trivia for those interested, for Scandinavian farming families during the Viking age, the custom was for eldest sons to be sent off to war while the younger sons would inherit the farming lands. Hence why Ketil cares about Olmar inheriting the farm, and not Thorgil. Arnheid being a comfort-woman/sex-slave to Ketil was also relatively easy to guess when she originally first introduced herself in episode 3 as Ketil’s “personal attendant”. And yeah, the fact that Ketil is so attached to her definitely implies that she likely has no option to buy her freedom, and likely expects to be a slave for life. Also if ones can recall, even Einar was eyed by potential buyers as a sex-slave in episode 1 (though it was more explicit in the manga where the potential buyer even grabbed Einar’s junk as part of the “inspection process”). This series also does a good job of depicting how the harsh social mores and norms of the time existed and why they existed (that even despite the harshness they also weren’t completely arbitrary in their existence). Hence, why even Pater and Snake were insistent on the children receiving a form of corporal punishment, so they would avoid having the stigma “unpunished thief” permanently attached to them.

@RabidDogma
@RabidDogma Жыл бұрын
It's a real shame that some societies didn't figure out that corporal punishment doesn't work until a long time later (and some still use it). In almost all cases, crimes of these kinds are the result of an inadequacy in the system. Someone is hungry, or poor, or without something vital, so they have to resort to crime. The solution is what Pater first said - you fix the inadequacy. They lost the person who could farm, so Pater's going to teach THEM to farm. They pay Ketil back AND learn lifelong skills in the process. It's not even theory at this point, it's been proven time and time again - punishment does not stop crime. Cops do not stop crime. If they did, cities with the most cops would have the least crime. And adding more cops never fixes anything. Conversely, cities and countries that improve education, provide more/better social services, better paying jobs and more of them, THOSE cities see drastic decreases in crime. Halden Prison is the ultimate example. They don't punish inmates. They rehabilitate them. The prisoners are treated like humans, with respect, and helped to be better people and learn new skills. And the Netherlands has so few criminals (because of their incredible social safety nets and their culture of helping rather than punishing) that they keep closing prison after prison after prison, turning them into businesses or housing, or just demolishing them. And if we got into the reasons why people kill each other, that would be a whole other conversation. Most of those are crimes of passion and/or self-inflicted. Very, very few people ever actually are trying to hurt or kill someone for no reason.
@TheoVorster
@TheoVorster Жыл бұрын
@@RabidDogma Very well said, I couldn’t agree more, the tragedy of the cultural expectations and regressive value systems was a big part of why punitive and retributive justice existed (and still exists in other forms today) in such societies. I think you’ll definitely enjoy what Vinland Saga as a series explores in the future, it’s very much a series that continuously interrogates its themes regarding conflict and violence on both individual and and societal levels.

The main theme of Vinland Saga is violence. And I don't mean it's violent, I mean it's about violence. And that takes so many more forms than just fighting, and this episode is an example of that: toxic masculinity is, in the end, a form of violence against men.
@rayvaughn4855
@rayvaughn4855 Жыл бұрын
Great take. Ketil is also an example of how restricting toxic masculinity can be to men who want to define themselves outside of patriarchal gender norms. I could see ketil becoming a very protective and loving father to orphans or some shit if it wasn't for the culture he grew up in. Love and empathy is not allowed to be associated with masculinity and it's sad to see honestly.

It was common-place during those times, and necessary for a farm owner of his scale. Ketil buys slaves of war, if he doesn’t buy them, someone else will, so judging his character based on owning slave isn’t fair, it’s akin to judging a modern human on having workers for their business. You should judge Ketil on how he treats his slaves, and he is just & fair to them, even offering them a chance for paying of their freedom. Judging Ketil on modern values would be a presentism fallacy, unless you believe moral is objective, which I do, but that is based on my Christian beliefs.

I think the sadder part is that he's not even a failed Thors because you gotta try first to fail. He's just a coward and a liar, but at least he pretends to be nice so he could be worse. Or maybe that false kindness is worse than just being a savage like his son.
