I watched this about a month ago in preparation for my solo HST trek. Just made it out of the Portal yesterday!! The best 5 days of my life. Currently sitting in my car in sequoia (waiting for the gas station to open), and I’m reliving my experience through videos. This made me happy! Such a wonderful film. Even better watching it the second time!! 🥰

Back in the Summer of ‘76, two friends and I (we were in the Navy at the time), did the section from Tuolumne Meadows to Devil’s Postpile, with a few side-trips along the way. We didn’t have enough to make the entire journey but sure had a ball. We ended up teaming up with two more folks and sojourned together for about half of the trip. One of those folks was a guru on wild edibles and trees, etc, so we had informal classes on these topics every time we stopped for a break or meal or whatever…changed my life completely. Love you guys and have been following you since the days of y’all traveling with Jessica & Jorge (as well as Linus, Petunya, and of course Ripley)…

Well I’m a day late in viewing but I have a note from my mom so hopefully you won’t give me a demerit! This has been another fantastic film Mak & Owen, your story held my attention and kept me in suspense for most of the film. Seriously, you both and your editor get better and better with every film you make. Couple details: I enjoyed your friend giving you both some Q&A prior to your departure. It humanized you both more than normal but especially Owen. I think a minute or two on the return from the summit bypass would have made the film more complete, skipping the return makes the viewer think it’s either a super easy/boring hike or short and easy hike. Regardless the film was lacking just that little something to help wrap up the ending. Loved the film! As always, thank you for everything, Bryan

Awesome film--thank you! I appreciate the gear list. How heavy were your packs? I can't believe how easily you hoisted them from the ground to your backs. You had a *lot* of stuff I would have left behind--a towel?! My sister and I just came back from a backpack that was to have been 9 days, 8 nights from the Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead to Whitney Portal--shortened to two days, 1 night because of an unseasonably cold first night . . . and unreasonably heavy pack weight: 40 lb apiece. Added to that was predicted snow and single-digit temps on Mt Whitney for our summit day, which was to have been 9/19/24.
