BREN ORTON ROYAL FLUSH
Bren flew into Cali just a day after I got off my downriver freestyle Royal Flush, and although Royal gorge was getting into the lower end for the flows, I told him I would get him in for his first lap ever. Luckily it stayed just above 700 which I told him was the cutoff. Though that meant we would need to make it happen as a one day lap. Although we couldn’t get anyone else in there with us, since I had already gotten my flush this year i solely focused on setting safety as well as filming. It’s a different experience walking around everything, but to be able to help make it happen for Bren’s first Royal flush was epic. 11 hours on the water, so much whitewater, so many stouts for Bren, and and epic day.

I miss Bren so much. I'm glad he got the flush, but it puts me in tears when I see him in video. That dear sweet ginger lad just loved kayaking. He also loved life in general, and got as much joy out of a physics equation as he did an awesome line in a legendary river. I'm really glad that he had a friend in Dane who would take him along and help him get this first descent. I will never forget you Bren. Though the time you were in my life was short, it was beautiful. I wish you great lines, and good times wherever you are, and I hope you rest in peace.

That was awesome. So cool that you wanted Bren to get it that you were just there for safety/support. We got to see some of the walking around but actually would be interesting to see some more of that at times as I am sure that is just as intense as the river. It would just be cool to see what you have to do to scout at times. Awesome job by Bren and thanks Dane for being there for him.

With your out of this world skill set why did you portage some of those rapids? Seems like that put you at a greater risk than paddling as very sharp rocks, steep and carrying a lot of gear.

I would 100% feel confident in running them again. But I had already gotten my Flush, and in the end bigger stouts like Royal you could get hurt on. That combined with only having the two of us it’s just safer to portage.
