it is interesting you show how you guys get out and scout ahead. It is important to show that stuff so people understand you don't just go down a river without information about what is ahead...

I've seen a ton of Stikine vids but none that put the viewer "down in it" as well as this does. Heart pounding, massive, stomping stuff. No B games allowed.

These videos always blow me away. Whitewater kayaking is one of those institutions that strikes me as one which is incredibly well-knit and communal, but an equally difficult world to break into. But then again, how does one easily "break in" to shirking the reaper?

Find a local club if you have any. They will help you get into it.
@walthanas
@walthanas 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's all a matter of just going out there, joining a club and starting to paddle. I've been kayaking for three decades, and it never ceases to amaze me how in this paddling community, so many complete strangers, from all kinds of nations, are so friendly and accepting and easy to get along with. Sure, the more difficult the whitewater is, the more skill at both boating and rescuing is expected of you, so it will take some time to build those up, but that also gives you a chance to build a network of people to regularly go kayaking with, and progress together. Mind you, I come from one of the flatter nations in Europe, where there is no whitewater, but I still got to kayak whitewater on different continents simply by connecting with paddlers from abroad and getting invited by them to join them on their local rivers.
@roshaw87
@roshaw87 2 жыл бұрын
I've been to bike parks,ski hills and surf spots that are too busy but yet to be on a river where there was too many boaters. If it ever happens it might change the community, but for now and hopefully always it's a enthusiastic welcome anywhere I have travelled to paddle. Only limiting factor is your skillset and clubs are always there to help you learn.

You don't break into it, you just start by finding groups of people with similar aspirations as you for kayaking and stick with them. It's a long a slow haul to becoming good at kayaking, there's no cheatcode

When the video opens with a "WOOOOO, LETS GO!" in the first five seconds, you know its going to be good. I love the humor throughout, "Nice wood! Thank you for noticing!". Its also really cool how you get into the landscape of the river bed and how the different features are formed. The part in the landslide section was actually really informative and cool to understand the dynamic nature of the canyon. Is that a bunch of shales and slates in there? Also, that slot below Tanzilla is crazy!

I was wondering when you were gonna get around to paddling the Stikine. Awesome to finally see you get to do it! Also really appreciate you including all the scouting footage, and clips between the major rapids that usually get edited out in most other Stikine videos. Also made me chuckle how one of the first things you said when scouting Site Zed was "I remember that clip of Ferraro slamming into that rock!" Also never knew that Aniol swam at Pass or Fail, talk about a dangerous swim... Great video as always Dane!

If there's enough water, you should go for a try on the Tanzilla - the start is bone dry, but around the corner, down about 2km from the road there is a big falls (60ft?) into a slot canyon, and then the river gets big all the way to Tanzilla falls at the slot. (I bailed at the big falls)

Camp out. I want to start in grand lake Colorado and finish maybe in yuma Arizona. What do you think? Im considering buying a jackson nirvana large

Serious question, what do you guys do if you lose your paddle on a big river like this? Pack a backup? I've lost paddles in rivers that just... dissapeared instantly😅 I'm no professional. Barely even an amateur. But on a huge trip like this in the middle of nowhere.. do you guys have a contingency? Spare paddle broken down in the kayak or something?
@NChillbilly
@NChillbilly Жыл бұрын
The video started with him packing a spare paddle (broken down) which is the first video I've seem that. Breaking or losing a paddle on that river would have major consequences. Epic video. Way beyond what I ever could do. The Gauley is about it for me back in the day.
