For context Serie called Frieren talentless in relation to her age because Serie expects more for someone has lived more than a thousand years. (This is also why Frieren said that she isn't the mage Serie wishes her to be) Serie's capabilities are also way beyond what Frieren can do. Lernen, the old 1st-class mage was able to detect Frieren's real mana, compared it to Serie saying it's almost as big but what he fails to realize is that the mana Serie is projecting is also suppressed. Not just that, she has that level of talent and mana sensing to do that at her incredibly young age, whereas her other student has only reached a high level in that by the very end of his life under her tutelage and is still a bit inferior. Even if Fern is still a few blinks in her eyes in terms of lifespan, with such a high starting point combined by mortal haste she has massive potential even from her perspective. Given how much better Series' mana Mastery is compared to Frieren's makes me think that perhaps Flamme got the idea from Serie? Because that is pretty much the only thing Frieren has been taking seriously the last 1000 years, so it implies Serie has been doing so significantly longer if she is a lot better at keeping the fluctuations hidden. And while she's a lot more elitist and proud of magic (so looking down on the idea of personal mana suppression) it would actually be keeping to form that she acknowledges the power of information deception it provides and the high skill required and so did it anyway.

She calls suppressing mana pointless, yet has been doing it longer than anyone. It seems as if she's lying to herself as a defense mechanism, probably to deal with the countless times she's lost people close to her due to her immense age.

Their ideals and interests are so different. Frieren like spending most of her time searching for new spells, and most of them are utility spells, and we already saw several of weird spells that she collected. Serie on the other hand founded the Mage Association and is known as a living grimoire. So, yeah, Serie would probably beat Frieren in a 1vs1 battle, hell she might be able to defeat the Demon King by herself too, but let's stop it at that. I agree with you that Serie actually cares for her students, albeit not admitting it. She called the spell that create a field of flowers, the spell that Flamme and Frieren like most, a useless spell, but here she was, in a flower garden that probably created by that very spell.

Serie sees Frieren as someone who is wasting her chance to become an incredibly powerful mage. The only reason Frieren is considered strong is due to how long she has been alive, if any of the 1st class mages were to have lived as long as Frieren they would be FAR MORE powerful than Frieren. Also, considering Frieren is able to conceal her mana to about 1/10 of her total amount. If we assume Serie can conceal about 1/10 as well. That would make her have about 10 times more mana than Frieren. This is also why she considers mana concealing to be "useless" because even when she does it Demon's will shit their pants and run away long before they even encounter each other.

The other reason she considers it not worthwhile is that you don't need to hone to such a fine degree for it to be effective in battle against anything other than Demons. To use it to reliably trick most human opponents in battle you probably only need to practice it for a decade or two. So rather than spending 1000 years practicing it, you can use your time learning other spells and becoming stronger in other aspects of magical combat.

See, this is something I don't quite understand. What's the point of power if not for the purpose of using it? If anything, that's more of a waste, is it not? At least Frieren is doing something with her life and actually using her power to produce results. The same can't be said about Serie at least from what I have seen thus far. She seems to be on an ever expanding race track where she can never actually pass through the finish line. Like someone who is training but never considers it enough. No real clear goal in mind.

It's like if someone learned to fight while wlaking on their hands and wielding the sword with their feet, sure if they can libe for millenniums the time invested isn't that big, but had they used that time to learn/improve proper swordsmanship they would be much more powerful. Which Serie confirms, for a mage her age, Frieren is fairly weak.

Serie also didn't say that Frieren was strong on their first interaction, just that she has potential or something along those lines. She didn't dislike frieren because frieren rejected the offer, she disliked frieren because of her rationale to rejecting the offer Serie was also right that Frieren couldn't have defeated the demon king alone, Frieren herself said that. Her point wasn't that Frieren was carried, it was that she couldn't do it alone.

Man, so much to talk about this episode. 1. Serie is much much older than Frieren. Ergo, much more emotionally detached than Frieren. But taking in Flamme as an apprentice opened her mind to humans. A couple of episodes ago, we saw Serie's expression soften a little bit as she talked about Flamme, with a smile on her face. So I think that even though she said she doesn't like Flamme's ideals, she probably wouldn't have it any other way. It probably amuses Serie honestly. And I mean, look at her now- doing what Flamme asked of her in that last will she wrote. Took a long time (for humans at least) but she got around to it. 2. I also love how that spell to create a field of flowers connected them all. This spell is what made Flamme love magic. And this spell became Frieren's favorite because of Himmel. And in a bittersweet turnout... Frieren made a field of flowers on Flamme's grave, just as she conjured that field of blue moon weed flowers around Himmel's statue. 3. I think it just doesn't matter whether Frieren passed this test or not. Her pursuit of magic has always been and will always be about what it did for her and her loved ones. So even if Fern was the only one to pass, she still won. But it's that lack of ambition that Serie doesn't like. I don't think it's a grudge. She thinks Frieren could be so much more and she's just wasting her potential. Just as Frieren herself said in this episode, she didn't become the mage Serie wanted her to become. It's like they're both walking grimoires. Except, most of the spells in Frieren's list are folk magic that Serie would consider useless or pathetic. They're walking down two different but parallel paths. Different in how they see magic but parallel as in they're both influenced by Flamme.

If Frieren had not been there at all, Lawine and Kanne would have failed the first test. (Kanne might even have died to the bird monster). Without Lawine in the second test, they don't get the inside infomation that Lawine had on the true nature of Spiegel and the clones. Without that knowledge the group would not have been able to formulate as effective a strategy against all the clones as they did, or as quickly, and many more of them may have been driven to escape or even killed by the clones before Ubel (who wasn't progressing very quickly) made it to the lowest level to confront the Sense clone, if it ended up being stationed there.

For example, if Frieren didn't enter the test, and Kanne and Lawine happened to be paired with Wirbel, they may have just as easily passed. Or if they were paired with Fern, again... they may have just as easily passed the test. Them passing has little to do with Frieren and more to do with the test itself. *"Kanne might even have died to the bird monster"* If Frieren wasn't there you can't just assume things would have played out the same. Teams would be different. Where they went would be different. Her teammates could have warned her about the bird considering having everyone on your team at the end is pretty important.

I'm probably going to get roasted for this but Serie is absolutely correct not to pass Frieren as a 1st Class Mage. Not because she can't compare with other 1st Class Mages because she certainly does, she surpasses them in most cases. And if she was using their abilities as her scale then no it's not fair....but that's not what she's doing. She is acknowledging that Frieren is nowhere near where she should be at this stage in her life. She spent most of her life after Flammes death as a forest hippie, tripping on mushrooms and suppressing her mana. All while doing nothing else until the heroes party found her 80yrs back. Then, and only then, did she start practicing magic. But even then it was on a limited and hidden scale so she could deceive demons. So compared to what her capabilities are she is an untapped ocean of potential that has just gone to waste. That doesn't mean that she didn't accomplish great things or that she wasn't needed by the world, it's just disappointing to know there's so much talent there that has never been tapped into. It's rather sad if you think about it from that perspective. Imagine having a kid or being the teacher of a kid whose talent was endless and having to watch them throw it all away. Yes it would be their right to do so but I don't have to be happy about it, that's their job to be happy about not living up to their potential. If that brings them joy good for them. Hopefully the world doesn't need them at their best at some point, just sayin.

For anyone wondering, the english dub of frieren is actually fire. The accents all fit with the fantasy aesthetic and the voices are cast well. Frieren is a bit mommy voiced in the dub though (90% of people love that, the other 10 percent have mixed feelings) I like it though.

I also think Denken could pass. Despite being up against Frieren and even being able to tell that she was a better mage, he still believed that he stood a chance. Then, after having no mana, he was tenacious enough to persevere, get into a fistfight, and even win. He’s shown that he has it in him to go far. The only problem might be that his views on magic aligns with Frieren, which Serie disagrees with so much that Frieren already knew that she was gonna fail her without a doubt. For this reason, if he doesn’t pass, I would hope that he joins the group for a while, just until he gets to where he’s going. That’d be nice. Methode seems like a capable mage, from what we’ve seen, and Ubel seems to have good intuition and literal feel for magic. I could see Serie liking them for these reasons. Since the rest weren’t in the slideshow of fails, I can’t say for sure whether or not I could find a reason they might pass.

Yeah, Serie and Frieren don't see the world the same way. Frieren couldn't care less about being a First Class Mage. Serie knows that and fails her because that's perfectly fine with Frieren anyway. Fern is the first one that could see that Serie is suppressing her mana because Fern could detect the fluctuations. Serie is better than Frieren at controlling her mana even though she said that suppressing and hiding it was a waste of time. Even then Serie cannot suppress her mana any more than Frieren's full unsuppressed mana. We don't know how much power Serie has, we don't know if we're seeing 10% of her mana or only 1%. It's no wonder that some see her as a Goddess while others hate and fear her.

Careful with using the word "can't" suppress it further. She almost certainly can. In fact, it is common for a mage to suppress it to zero temporarily to avoid detection. She just doesn't want to. Flamme and Frieren are "trying" to make themselves look weak, because they care about making opponents underestimate them, so they reduce to to tiny amount. Serie sees the value in misinformation and the power it holds, but has no interest in appearing weak or being seen as anything except exceptionally strong, so it makes sense she is content with being perceived as having the greatest amount of mana in the world, even if she is not showing her full strength.

Her getting mad at Frieren over suggesting buying a new staff was pretty silly. Given the state it was in, it's pretty obvious why someone would think it couldn't be fixed and Fern just happened to be lucky that there was a mage capable of fixing it. That's not the kind of thing you can always expect to happen. She should take this opportunity of being able to fix her staff and buy a new one anyway to use during battle.

In a way, Serie isn't only jealous that Frieren and Flamme are closer, but that she’s jealous Frieren already comes to her acceptance of the humans’ short lifespan while Serie distances herself as her apprentice ages.
