"The height of magic" actually has parallels with ubel's magic. As long as ubel 'thinks' or "visualizes" she can cut something, not matter what other people say ,whether its infused with mana so its stronger etc., ubel can still cut it. This ties back in to Frieren and Fern fight at the end, Frieren was just able to visualize fern getting pushed back and getting crushed, fern wasn't able to do anything to defend against it since frieren just outright visualizes it. Good thing the original frieren was there else fern was a goner from the start. This was also not the only time frieren did this in this season, alot of people believed that the barrier in the first exam was "unbreakable", but frieren said "nah, i think i can break it", and sure enough she was able to break it. This anime is so good with world building and story, while also having god tier animation, if this isn't anime of Year I'm gonna throw hands like denken without mana 😂

The difference is uebels attack still uses “mana” that can be detected and defended against . Frierens spell had no hint of mana whatsoever. It’s mulch more likely that it’s a type of “reality manipulation “. She taps into the mana that exists all around all things and all times and creates the reality she envisions in her head. She could likely make you explode if she wanted , or separate your limbs from your body one by one and you would have no defense against it. But it’s a continuous spell that she has to focus on the entire time she’s casting it hence why she was so wide open to the actual Frierens counter attack. That’s why the last time she used it was 80 years ago when she had a party to watch her back as she used it to kill the demon lord. That’s just my theory though 🤷‍♂️

I imagine it would be the same as a blacksmith using heat based magic... normal people probably couldn't imagine melting a super tough metal or a nigh indestructible metal but a blacksmith necessarily has to be able to imagine that, how does one make a weapon made out of some powerful and/or mythical metal? Simple, you melt it! and that's the kind of "logic" Ubel uses, from her experience; cloth and hair are meant to be cut

Yeah, the point made about Ubel's signature spell is not that she can cut anything (though potentially she can). It was that stuff that's natural to cut like cloth and hair is weak against her spell regardless of how magically enhanced they are because she expects to be able to cut stuff like that, whereas Wirbel could block the same spell with his magic barriers because she expects magic shields to not be easily cut. If the proctor with the magic cloak used a force field instead and Sense's clone used normal defensive magic instead of her hair, then Ubel would've been screwed.

That makes it sound like anyone could use that weak spell to cut them... but that's not the case. Ubel is still special and she knows she is and that enforces the spell even more, it's kind of a virtuous circle

So even magically enhanced cloth and hair is just like regular cloth and hair to her. She's bypassing the magical defenses because she doesn't understand the principles behind it, so she only sees cloth and hair. In contrast, any regular mage with the cutting spell would understand the magical protections in the cloth and hair, so they would expect their cutting spell to be ineffective, and thus it will be.

Odds are only Ubel can use that spell that way and she literally said that she can't picture NOT cutting hair and cloth because of her background and that's why she was able to accidenally kill the proctor with the magic cape and why she was confident she could defeat Sense's clone. Sense herself acknowledged that she was screwed in that specific face-off because of it.

On the other hand, there’s also odds that she “perfectly envisioned” fully cutting through the proctor because she’d cut through people before (like, say, bandits), and at that time, didn’t have a solid grasp of how to ‘not’ cut through a person as easily as she would cloth. Like, hedging bets, it was still accidental, but only based upon it being in her mental locker for use. Although, had Burg had basic defensive magic active _under_ the cloak on-hit, it’s curious whether or not he would have been bisected (as Ubel wouldn’t know it was up, and would think she was just cutting the cloth/him).

@@syd.a.m I don't know that it's that she doesn't understand, it's more like she doesn't care, her conscious mind can see the defensive spells that deter other mages from being able to cut the cloth or hair, but on a deeper more instinctive level her lizard brain just sees cloth and hair and doesn't care, most other mages listen to the more "rational" part of themselves that overrides their instincts, but Ubel can still understand things while also still relying primarily on instinct, she can tell how strong the cloth and hair is magically but another part of her brain is going "scissors go brrrr" and as long as it's doing that that's all that matters to her.

So Sense knew from the very beginning that Ubel could easily defeat her Clone. It makes her entering the dungeon to provide an additional challenge for the examinees much fairer than it might initially have appeared. Yes it is a difficult and dangerous challenge, but the solution was already available. The examinees just have to find it.

So my theory is the spell that frieren casted on fern at around 18:00 was the same logic and spell ubel use (her cut magic) fern said she doesn't sense any mana to the attack and can hardly call it a magic spell, so it may be a physical attack in a form of a spell, strengthened by the caster's visual imagination. That's why clone frieren subdued fern so easily, because frieren says that she underestimates fern, and ubel defeated sense and the cloak guy easily, because for her cutting hair and a cloak is easy

I really love that they explained why Frieren keeps "falling" for mimicks instead of just saying that it's a quirk of hers. It's far more interesting that she's well aware of the overwhelming possiblity that the chests she opens are mimicks but cannot fight her insatiable greed for grimoires. It explains way back to the first episode when Himmel and the others were reminiscing of their adventures and in the flashback where they first showed Frieren stuck in a mimick, they were contemplating leaving her there. It makes sense now lol.

Ubel's ability to cut through that guy's cloak reminded me of something from Undead Unluck. Her situation with magic is just like Victor's reflexes. Every person has a reflex of self preservation when hitting something so that they don't break their fist. It is only logical. But Victor doesn't have that reflex because after billions of years of living, he has become accustomed to the fact that he'll just regenerate. Similarly, even though Ubel knew that cloak was impenetrable, she managed to visualize being able to cut it. That's why Sense believed she doesn't think like a human. Something as illogical as that is not something a human mind can achieve.

Sense is stronger than fern and ubel is counter of sense so this means methode can defeat fern. Methode is stronger than fern. Shes versitile and observes her enemies shes my mommy methode❤. You cant change my mind. Fern is ovverrrated. All she can do is defense, attack magic and conceal her presence whereas methode analizes situations in battlefield. Thats why i like the mechanics of magic in this world because stronger maged(mana) can be defeated by weaker ones. Just like what freiren said she cant imagine defeating kanne during the rain.

Clone frieren looked like it was using the black version of zoltraak that Qual used, human killing magic as opposed to the white version that is specialized for killing demons. (Also pats for the kitty.)

At least we now realized that Frieren is actually EXTREMELY powerful. Totally OP. I'm now excited how will they animate Frieren vs. Solitar together with Denken vs. Macht fights in the future, if they make S2 of this anime.
