What a great video, thanks for putting this up. He really sounds great. Both he and Roger McGuinn still sound great after all those years. Takes me back to the 60's. I remember seeing Linda Ronstadt and the Flying Burrito Brothers at what is now CSUN in Northridge, when I transferred in 1969. Ah, the 60's. I also got to see/hear the Byrds in 1968 right when Sweetheart of the Rodeo came out, over in Pasadena.

This is “Diamond”. Such clear recollections by Chris & interesting stories. First Bluegrass album I ever bought was The Hillmen. Lost that album in a catastrophic bushfire in 2021 that destroyed my home & all within. One of 86 homes destroyed. Same as Chris, I grabbed one guitar, Passports & some personal papers, a change of clothes & toiletries. No time to do more. Left 4 horses behind, a banjo, Maton guitar, a carefully cursted collection of 1500 or more LPs/CD’s from all genres but heavily weighted to folk, blues, trad country, Cajun, TexMex world music…. Yes, The Dillards, D&C, The Byrds, Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, Woody Guthrie,Beatles, Burritos, Buffalo Springfield, SFH Band, MCH, Eagles, Poco, CSNY, Manassas, all original 1960’s/70’s….I grabbed a CD thst I thought was a MCH Live recording & although I’m usually careful to replace discs in their correct covers, when I slipped the disc out, I found it was Chris’s Time Between album. Well, thank you for this; loved it! That signature Byrd’s song Turn, Turn, Turn certainly applies to where I am right now…. Thanks Pete Seeger & Roger, Chris, David, Gene & Michael.🙏 Come to think of it, Wildflowers applies too…. so I’m off to find some in Springtime SW Australia.

I've been a fan since 1965, and let me say I was blown away by Chris' bass playing on numbers like "Everybody's Been Burned" not to even mention Chris' long, illustrious career -- but Chris mentioned Bob Eubanks the DJ, who was at Sun Records in Memphis the very NIGHT (literally) Elvis got his start on the radio and on records. So it was an interesting coincidence he got The Byrds on the radio first. And it was none other than Miles Davis who urged Columbia Records to sign The Byrds to a contract.

Such a personally and professionally high quality guy who was the anchor and stabilizing factor in so many great music projects. Don't know how Chris managed to fit in with so many egotists and near-lunatics in the earlier years but the great music they created has influenced music for the last half century. I listen to groups like The Jayhawks today and hear Chris' influence in song and bass. Two things about this gentleman don't get mentioned nearly enough: the brilliant first Manassas album on which he and Stephen Stills were featured and, from all that I've read, his enduring friendship with Gene Clark, through good times and bad, when Gene was in often desparate need of a friend's support. The years '65-'69/70 are well documented. Chris Hillman, even with the cool image back in the day, was always about the music, the musicians, and the contributions he could make towards producing some of the best American popular music we have. Never heard or read of any musician who's worked with him speak a negative word about him.

Been on a Chris Hillman kick lately… listening to his album “biding my time”(that I just got about a month ago) quite a bit, and I’m nearly through his book called “time between”… Been checking out flying burrito Brothers on KZbin, dug out an old vinyl of Manassas that I’ve never really paid much attention to before… Great stuff. And of course, I’ve always been a hard-core Byrds fan… thought I’d surf KZbin and see what was out there of Chris’s, came across this… Just great. Too bad the sound is so messed up though - Chris’s mic was shorting out in the beginning of this, and then the music levels were a little bit uneven here and there, but still… Really enjoyed it! And I see that Chris is going to be touring again this year! Might have to check that out… BTW, he’s got a signature Guild Starfire bass that looks and sounds pretty damn sweet…

I went through all this in LA with hopes of becoming an A&R man but got drafted in 65 like thousands and thousands of young aspiring SoCal musicians. How did guys like Chris and Roger avoid the draft? Did they have college deferments? Not criticizing, just curious.
@lesliegoodman-malamuth97963 жыл бұрын
@Summer Lake Photog How DID Chris and Roger avoid the draft? It’s a legitimate question. But when Chris wants to avoid answering a question, he will do so. He did the same in his memoir, Time Between. Chris recalls minutely ever model number of every instrument he played, for example. He didn’t mention the draft. I’m glad he’s been happily married since 1979, but before Connie he had three previous wives. He could have crammed them into one sentence, but not a mention here either…

On the upside, Crosby was the greatest high harmony singer in rock music so hearing that voice in a recording session likely suspended the negative emotions temporarily and fed the creative musician side of his fellow Byrds. I know that after creating a song like "John Riley" I'd have taken care of David's dinner bill and bar tab.
@cowboyluke17063 жыл бұрын
@@rogermurray8553 Well Crosby didn't create the song, Many recorded it well before him including Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Judy Collins. The version by the Byrds was influenced by the Baez version. As for the greatest high harmony in rock, Nash generally took the high harmonies in CSN. Crosby had great harmony but bounced it around, not specifically known for high harmony, but in the end he did wear out his welcome where ever he went .
@rogermurray85533 жыл бұрын
Make it a point to read for comprehension, Cowboy. I never implied Crosby "created" the song, but his masterful vocal on that track surely must've inspired the "creativity" of the musicians around him. I get that you don't like Crosby so you must still gloat over the fact that he was dumped by The Byrds, sold his soul to the Devil, and joined a "supergroup" whose relevance to rock music lasted for a whole two albums, AND as a final insult, had the richness of that voice obscured, often negated, on stage and in studio, by Nash's reed-thin vocal whinings. And if there's one thing that Nash and Baez share in abundance, it's their capability to make listeners throw up their arms in despair within 150 seconds and cry, "I've had enough. Please!"

Chris actually looked very uncomfortable in videos of the Byrds. He refused to sing at first; just played his guitar. He said he was quiet and shy. I'm sure the loss of his father to suicide greatly affected him. I see him starting to loosen up when he was performing with Gram, although he wanted Gram to sing the lead vocals. They got along very well at first, living and writing together, until Gram's addictions took over, probably caused by his own sad family history. We're fortunate these two talents got together, even though briefly.

So his stories show how we have to realize that a lot of what the media puts out is either wrong, exaggerated or that musicians have short memories and forgiving hearts. Band breakups (to the public) seem horrendous and sad. But really it's more like family squabbles that pass in a couple of weeks or years and then the next reunion happens and everyone is eating burgers and hand cranked ice cream together, telling stories about granny and pulling the kids out of the pond. Seems like only a few result in total shunning or real hate.
