A rare and wonderful opportunity not only to listen to Billy Collins read his poems but also to hear his views on the poet and his/her craft. It's long but well worth the time.

Billy should really have given the guy credit for his poem. It was very much an ode to Collins, and a very good one, and very profound. Nice work, interview guy!

I have just discovered him. So nice to find a poet not determined to bamboozle and confuse you. And yes, Kevin Spacey exactly!

Watching this en route to an open mic in town, stopping at 17:20 and realizing that just last night a friend asked me to write a poem about her quitting her licensure program. I did the same thing Billy Collins appears about to do. I changed the subject.

I've really enjoyed listening to Billy Collins' poems read by the poet himself. It makes such a difference to hear a poem read by the person who wrote it. ♥ #heidiannemorris.com

Hey! Collins is my all time favourite. I can only speak to why I enjoy his work. As a personality trait, I am unimpressed by surfaces of things, and when I read his poetry I try to be aware of the sudden conceptual shifts of framing he creates. This is why many call him witty. But humor is something profound, not just for laughs. It sets a premise, and suddenly betrays you to reveal another side that you did not expect. The result is laughter, but in the brain there is a new connection that has been made between two seemingly unconnected domains. This is the function of metaphor, and his conversational style sets you up for a normal walk in the park, until you realize you were somewhere else entirely. But if you don't enjoy his style compared to others, I guess that's the mysterious thing called taste. It is always disappointing to realize that what we see as true beauty often is just the way we see something personally, and not shared with everyone else. Something to mourn I guess.

There is little art in his poetry. Where is the drama? Where is the music? His reading voice reminds me of "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy" which is a skit from the 90's lineup of Saturday Night Live. His poetry sarcastic and jokey. Furthermore, it's all about his life, pets, or other tepid and tiresome subjects. Unfortunately, I have to study this narcissistic bore for a Creative Writing class I'm attending.

For someone who’s self proclaimed aware and tenacious, you failed to read between the lines. Taste is subjective after all, personal and valid. Good luck on your papers, I feel the same way about math.

@@BetaCummins I have read between the lines. Yeah, he's "deep". But, where's the lyricism that Thomas or Blake possessed? Where's the ecstasy of Ginsberg or Lamantia, even Coruso? Furthermore, Billy's reading voice is placid and passionless. Boring. No lilt. Monotone. On another note: How do you know I failed to read between the lines? Oh, I get it, if I saw his "brilliance" I wouldn't have made that comment. His "work" is "slice-of-life" "Jack Handy" (a skit from Saturday Night Live) contemporary fluff. And, now it's worse. We have boring poetry by poetasters like Rupi Kaur. From where does this trend of boring, monotone, and passive poetry originate? Answer--the lack of standards in our modern world.
