There really is something so magical about old Sony products. Despite all their flaws and proprietary-ness, they always had the most captivating devices.

how do you so perfectly capture the essence of 2000s tv show ambient electronic music?
@ExentioКүн бұрын
Hey, great video! I'm Exentio and I'm working on one of the Vaio P modernization projects shown in those articles, thanks for the shoutout! I'm glad to see that many people are still interested in the Vaio: despite telling myself that I'm doing this for myself (I want to use it as a writing tool for my stories!), it really keeps my motivation up to see that there are people who want to see this succeed! There will be some updates on my blog and socials as soon as I get the next batch of boards in my hands, I hope to have something more complete to show everyone in around a year, but for now, I made enough pieces of the puzzle that people can already start making easier and cleaner handwired builds than what the Reddit guy did!
@zeno8402Күн бұрын
are you making replacement motherboards for these? if so then cool 👍 (i would make a new vaio UX motherboard if i could, would be impractical but hilariously fun)
@ExentioКүн бұрын
@zeno8402 yeah, I'm making a motherboard with support for Raspberry Pi Compute Modules, so it'll be upgradeable over time! I'm working with Arya (the writer of those Hackaday articles) who has already made a prototype board that uses Raspberry Pi Zeros instead! We're working on different approaches: she's going to reuse the stock IO ports and is making a "simpler" design using the Raspberry Pi's pins for display output (DPI) thus "offloading" some complexity to the software, while I'm going to modernize the IO too and make it more plug and play (HDMI instead of DPI) The progress so far has been reverse-engineering the display and keyboard/mouse, and I already made boards to use them (waiting to finalize the backlight driver), what's left is not necessarily easier, but the reverse engineering is all done! Although maybe I should make this clear: it's not gonna be a commercial product sold by me, but a fully open source project (already on Github) that will be easy to get made by PCB manufacturers, and people are allowed to make batches of boards and sell them. This is to avoid artificial shortages and to allow people to contribute, improve, and upgrade the boards!

And the camera that caught my 12-year-old eye in a Broadway in HK was the Olympus OM-D. Not sure what model it was but it was silver. The sales guy there even complimented me, saying “he knows how to hold a camera”.

I had an opportunity to grab one of these at a pawn shop once. $160 for the most bare minimum model. I didn't get it, honestly have enough old nonce at this point. I definitely think the device is a beautifully crafted device, and I almost wish Vaio would come along and make a device like it again, with a modern Snapdragon or one of AMD's newer APUs. Glad to see this getting some respect.

I've always been a strong advocate of the "no-compromise" pocketable laptop, hence why I finally pulled the trigger on a GPD Win Mini (the 2023 model with Oculink and 64gb). Too bad the Vaio P was so underpowered even for the OSs of the time. And It was a bit too long to be carried safely in pants' pocket. Because I entered college in the heyday of the netbook, I ended up getting an Asus N10Jh instead (Atom CPU, but discrete low-end Geforce), which gave me a ridiculous amount of use time.

I had the fortune of working on VAIO P as a friend of mine has it and wanted it formatted and installed with fresh Windows 7, it is so elegant! As for me luck brought me a Gigabyte M912 netbook 3in1, although enjoyed it lacks the power to run many of my favorite programs. Today the only equivalent I know is the GPD Win Mini (2025) which packs a powerful Ryzen Ai 9 370 HX, I want one but sadly cannot afford it like the good old Vaio P days hahaha

Absolutely share your enthusiasm about this!, I was at high school when I’ve first seen it on 2009 and I really love it, then at 2010 I got the second version of it in an orange color, the materials felt a little different from this ones but it was a really interesting device to use at university, sadly it had many issues, starting with the windows vista, it was slow and got frozen suddenly, I thought things would change after installing windows 7, it wasn’t slow but it still warmed too much and had a clear stripe at the left side of the screen, I claimed the guarantee and got another one white one with windows 7 from the fabric, after one week it won’t turned on anymore. I got my full refund and bought a 2011 11 inch MacBook Air that still use everyday till today.
