The Plex addition sold me! Thanks Blunty for the review.

WOW. The 16 TB version is almost the same price as the two 8 TB drives inside of it cost alone. That is amazing.

Alternative to this, most routers with USB ports can share the content of the drive you hook up, like a media server (SAMBA or DLNA). The Asus router I got (DSL-AC52U) even has a download manager (supports torrents which is a big plus for me). Granted, it doesn't have the capabilities of this NAS (PLEX server is a nice feature) but it's a cheaper solution that works similar to this unit. Thorough video by the way. Hope your channel grows further.

Mate I was seriously looking to purchase the parts for a new file server in the next day or two, but this seems like a much better option for my needs.

Its nice to see an affordable NAS finally hitting Gigabit throughput. The last time I looked none of the ARM or MIPS ones got close.

+Andrew Melder Synology do some pretty amazing NAS boxes too, though you have to bring your own drives.

Have you ever used the Synology or QNAP NAS servers? I'm using the Synology DS212J with 2x 6TB WD Red drives (in BASIC config) and would highly highly rate it - I bought it new in 2012 with a 2TB WD Green drive, before adding a 3TB WD Red and then biting the bullet and getting 12TB and putting the 3TB in a caddy which connects to the back via USB (2.0 sadly, but new ones have 3.0 - mine is 4 years old after all). Same as this one sounds, it seems a little loud when busy but I have it in the study with my desktop and stream via LAN and WLAN elsewhere so it's never really too much of an issue. WD drives have always been super reliable in my opinion - even the old 2 TB Green never had an issue and I brought it over from the UK to Australia wrapped up in my luggage! It does also runs Plex but I serve all files to my HTPC/Desktop/Laptop/tablets and phones via Kodi (XBMC to the old guard) and it works fantastically. Ever used it? Not really used Plex as it seemed a bit complicated but I didn't really give it much of a go and would be interested to see how they compare as far as subtitles on MKVs and x265 files. As a sidenote - I'm on S03E07 of Battlestar Galactica at the moment! How are you finding it? I watched it years ago but rewatching it so the wife can enjoy. Great vid, and well done on making it seem exciting!! NAS servers are pretty special bits of kit and once you have one you'll wonder how you lived without one.

I suppose the good thing about a slightly noisy NAS is that it doesn't have to be anywhere you're going to hear it. If it was too noisy for watching movies from, you could always shove it in a closet somewhere! (assuming you have a long enough ethernet cable)
@Agret8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend putting stuff into a closet. They would get very hot in there and be a fire hazard. You need to install some very good exhaust fans in your closet if you want to use it like that.

Cool! I thought only an intel i5 or above manage to transcode 1080p movies through Plex... Have you tried fully fledged BluRay-mkv? Say a 50GB mkv of a movie with good amounts of data flowing like Avatar och The Dark Knight with stream-quality of 8 mbit/s?

I love cool technology like NAS's and server rooms, and large network setups. They're so much fun, but I have no practical use for any of it so it's not worth spending money messing around with it :/

Hi Blunty. Did you try x265/hevc files with plex through this NAS? If it can stream h265 I'll be in heaven!
@JoeldaCunha8 жыл бұрын
do you have problemas with transcoding in plex with that NAS server? I'm considering buying one for plex but if it doesn't properly and smoothly transcode mkv 1080p files for instance it would be much of a plex server, ever consider making a video on that? Thanks for the awesome videos btw
@BluntyTV8 жыл бұрын
Zero issues with plex.
@midnightClub5438 жыл бұрын
How many multiple streams of 1080p content from plex do you think that NAS would support?
@BluntyTV8 жыл бұрын
+midnightClub543 What file type? What Bitrate? live Transcoding required or direct feed play, what network setup, what other network congestion is there, and bandwidth limitations, ethernet, wifi, outside of LAN? There are far too many variables for me to give ANY kind of remotely useful answer to that. "It depends" is the only answer you're gonna get.
@eeveea_1468 жыл бұрын
+Blunty I appreciate this reply more than you'd think. Too many times I see reviews, then they're like 'WOW, 8 STRRAMS' Well... Yeah, it's direct play..... Of course it can handle it.

How does it compare, performance wise to the WD My Book Live Duo? I have major speed issues accessing it. Super slow! I am tempted to get the EX2 case and transfer the two DUO drives over.

Cooling must be poor though as I have a 4TB RED in my server and it runs 30-35C but the video shows 53C. Even with another drive practically touching it I didnt get above 45C.

Or the ambient temp is different there...
@alexatkin8 жыл бұрын
+David Allen Quite likely, but it doesn't alter the fact he said the fan only kicks up when in heavy use but IMO it should already be trying to keep the temps lower than that.

Sorry to be that guy Mr Blunty, but that is a poorly made network cable you are using on that NAS. Nice review tho. I was about to buy the previous model didn't know about this one. Thanks.
@BluntyTV8 жыл бұрын
+Dantech It's not a poorly made ethernet cable, just old and frequently used. Considering the long and useful life it's had, to last this well, it is in fact a very well made network cable :P
