Most men in the 18th century (apart from workers and peasants, obviously) had their hair cut short and wore a wig. But when they took the wig off at home they usually wore some kind of soft cap, often of fur or velvet, to keep their head warm. When they wanted to be portrayed informally, it would often be wearing a favourite cap. Look up portraits of David Hume or William Hogarth, for example.

fun eye fact: the L type cones, frequently described as "red" cones, actually have their peak sensitivity in the yellow part of the spectrum. They are also mildly stimulated by near ultraviolet light, but our eyes' natural lens filters those wavelengths - with the lens removed, near ultraviolet light appears magenta coloured because it activates both L type and S type cones.
@RFC35144 жыл бұрын
All cone types are sensitive to a pretty wide range of wavelengths (distributed in a non-uniform way). In fact, even rods have non-uniform spectral sensitivity (and we do get some chromatic information from them, though the spatial distribution of cones and rods across the retina makes rods far less relevant than the combination of different cone types - basically you need two or more sensor types very near each other to be able to distinguish hue, and the region where rods are useful for that is already full of cones, that react much faster). It's almost like our eyes _weren't_ designed by God. 8-)
