I mean, his regular glasses say Gucci on them, so they're pretty cool to begin with.

I'm thankful for this channel, it helped me once avoiding a total panic attack when I started seeing the effects of Scintillating Scotoma. A month before it happened I saw a video of this channel showing the exact shape I was about to see. It started out with a tiny blind spot, which was filled in by my brain with surrounding colors, so I didn't even notice the blind spot for the first few minutes. When it started showing the shape, I instantly remembered the video and knew I had nothing to worry about. I laid down and enjoyed the show, just as I did with that Objectivity episode.

But has the Royal Society formed a committee to investigate the effects of wearing sunglasses at night?

Preliminary findings have shown that wearing darkened lenses, or, "SunGlasses" after twilight does in fact aid the user in tracking the visions in their eyes. Further studies advise against masquerading with persons wearing such lenses, or, "Shades," and even suggest that one may benefit greatly, or "have it made" in their company. Intriguing.

The glasses don't actually need to be dark to reduce the risk of cataracts, though. Regular glass blocks almost 100% of UV-B and UV-C (the ones that cause real damage). So, ironically, those glass blowers already had access to the material that would protect them. And Sir William R. Keting ended up selling it back to them.

It could be that a bit of tint helps their craft though. The right tint can help bring the light levels down so that a craftsman can see the difference between what would otherwise be very bright and indistinguishable levels. The right tint is important in welding, from personal experience; too dark and you just can't see, too light and everything is just a wash of light and you can't see to properly manipulate your material.

the tint also was useful for steel workers and welders both of which expanded during ww1

I'm sorry but I googled it and "UVA: low-energy radiation that can harm the macula, which is located in the deepest part of the eye. This can be harmful to one's central vision if left unprotected. While not as powerful as UVB, it is much more prevalent.". So indeed, protecting against UV-A is important and so surely tinting or polarisation or other UV blocking techniques are used for a reason.
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 Жыл бұрын
@@jama211 - While UVA (and even strong visible light) can indeed cause damage to the macula, the study they were asked to do was specifically about _cataracts_ (as Keith mentions at the start), which are generally attributed to UV-B and UV-C. It would be interesting to test those lenses and see which wavelengths they actually block.

I dated a guy from Iraq for a month like a decade ago... one of the most charming things I remember about him is how when we'd go out he'd always call his sunglasses "my sunny GLASSes". I still call them that in my head.

Glassblower cataracts are caused by infrared, rather than UV radiation. UV will certainly cause other types of cataract and plenty of ocular surface/corneal insult too, so the filters would have helped even if they were targeting the wrong end of the spectrum

I wud prty much be a stay at home hermit if i lived at any time prior to the advent of sunglasses I have a light sensitivity issue related to my sensory processin disorder; and the best way ive found to handle it is to wear dark sunglasses everywhere if i cant turn off the lights there. I am the person who in Brady's position wudve kept the sunglasses on the whole vid heh I dont wear sunglasses inside cuz its cool; i do it cuz the lights are too bright and yall with regular eyesight just need wayyyyy too much light to see heh

"Scientists of this period were not adverse to a bit of capitalisation". 'Someone' has been out of the academic environmenet for too long, or is glossing the current state of things (for the last couple of hundred years) with that statement. It implies that this was something that was a little unusual, rather than the normal state of affairs - keeping the idea of scientists, in the general public's eyes, as these lofty idealists, only out for the general good - even today. That's never been the case. Many ARE out for the general good, but they are also very intelligent individuals, by definition, and will generally line their own nest when the opportunity arises - and good for them.

What a bizarre complaint. Sunglasses are essential for safe driving when the sun is at a low angle and prevent vision damage & eye strain from prolonged outdoor activity. Do you also hate people that wear bike helmets, work gloves, or steel toe boots?
