7:23 Organic Maps uses crowdsourced OpenStreetMap data; we can all contribute. OSM is the hub of a deep, rich ecosystem. I like Every Door for adding bike, ped amenities.

Too bad this doesn't open on my desktop. Being mostly blind It always helps to prep my maps for travel. Before I have to deal with a phone screen. I usually organize my trip at home and then upload to my phone. Any plans to make this available on desktop?

interesting. i used mapme a lot for offline maps before i had full time data, it was intergated with a waypointing app i use alot back since 2016, and it is one of the few apps that will accept a coordinate as a destination. . i know they were adding features and it would always ask if i wanted to go online to look up locations, but tbh i didnt even notice they added all the junk you spoke off , and most of the offline nav/ map functionality worked just fine even in 2021

Thanks for this video, I never knew I really needed to install a better carting app. Just not sure if it really limits what get's sent to google since my android still sends telemetry even if I never use googles own map app?

Your location will still be transmitted, but Google takes places you search for within the Google Maps app and uses that data for advertising. Using Organic maps would mitigate this.

IMHO what is REALLY NEEDED is a "publicly auditable " DATA source system as APs like these live / die by the DATA they have / collect and this is a WIDER issue with "proprietary" companies ALL "hording" there data for PERSONAL gain My city 5 years ago joined up with waze maps and shared construction + traffic and accident real time data and it was GREAT but the city dropped it due to LOW reach and NO "DATA PORTABILITY" IE the city NEEDED to "join" apple AND GOOGLE and BING and every other mapper and provide DIFFERENT API support and it was to much "WORK" for a small city to take on I could see an "open sourced - PORTABLE" DATA collection / aggregation service that would have "open sourced" API's that ANYBODY could "plug into" and send / receive data INCLUDING "pre scrubbed" location and speed / MODE information say "open street DATA" I know owning a store having approx FOOT / CAR / BUS traffic outside would be a handy tool and we all know GOOGLE KNOWS that BUT WILL not SHARE it for "competitive advantage"

I love Organic Maps for travel, but I also like the Google tracking feature, I always like to see where are my friends now.

I find Magic Earth has a much better UX than Organic Maps. It’s much faster.

ffs... Google Maps -> Settings-> Offline maps. It was there since years.

Yep, but this is limited to a ... let me check... Limited to half of New Mexico.... and it's about 150 MB. So, the whole state would be 260 MB. The organic maps version would be about 117 MB. And you don't need to manually adjust the map to get every piece of the map offline, just select states from the list and use it.

@@sonickrnd I can understand that using different app can be more convenient but selling it as a novel solution is laughable. OSM is around for ages and anyone can download these maps for offline use for free. There's also selection of apps, to choose from, that make use out of them already. But any effort towards helping people to de-googlify themselves should be appreciated.
