Exploration is one of Genshin Impact's shining virtues thanks to its immaculate presentation and worldbuilding. But there are times when the amount of questing/exploring starts to become tiresome especially for players who've been here since day one. Today I want to pose the question of if Genshin Impact has TOO much exploration

I'm a former avid hiker who was diagnosed with a severe neurological condition 7 years ago. Long story short, I've had severe mobility issues since then and can no longer hike, let alone run. I use a wheelchair often. So obviously I'm biased, but the main draw of Genshin for me is, and has always been, its exploration. It allows me to somewhat connect with an activity I loved but can no longer do. Otherwise, I've seen its kind of story and the way lore is hidden in plenty of other WRPGs and JRPGs. Don't get me wrong, I'm still interested in hearing more about it, and its fun being so OP/trying different teams in SA after playing since 1.1, but without new areas to explore, I'd probably have dropped playing this game long ago.

Sorry to hear about your condition, I hope it gets better in some way for ya. Your comment is on point though, but if you ever run out of exploring to do I hear modded Morrowind and its ever expanding land has you hiking over mushrooms and mountains (both of varying sizes) all the while discovering fun things. :D As AR 60 player who always prioritized exploring the game world over anything else and fell so far behind in Genshin's main story he barely finished Inazuma by the time Nahida's banner was out, Genshin had to go. I hated trying to keep up with the limited time things so much so I couldn't find joy in exploring anymore nor did it feel like I was even discovering anything remarkable on my journey through Teyvat. I suppose not understanding why I was collecting some green Sumeru things to level up the huge onion felt artificial and "gamey" in comparison to unlocking pillars and the sealed door in Liyue by collecting the yellow versions of the same thing?

@@user-in5kc9eu8b You missed the point. The video's topic is about exploration, so I told how I felt about it. It doesn't matter whether they unlock something or not. A core gameplay design for Genshin is collect-a-thon - you explore and collect a lot of things for various purposes. I gave an example of collecting Sumeru's green (whatever they are called) things, which felt far more artificial than previously likely because it had been done before in each unique area in different better ways. There was context and quests related to collecting them for both Inazuma and Dragonspine's trees, but hardly any justification for Sumeru. It's only busy work to stop you from thinking about what you're playing, much like the vast majority of the events.

Pre-watch comment: To Genshin's credit, exploration is really the only form of content you have. Once that is done your game loop consists of just completing events, doing dailies and rolling for characters. Exploration is it's main source of entertainment and permanent stuff that the player has at their disposal (barring the TCG, but it's not the main appeal of the game). Without it, Genshin would be much more lifeless with much less things to do than it is right now.

take into account that the open world stuff is what causes the game to be contentless, Genshin often or not has 4 to 8 months of dead week because creating a brand new open world too explore takes way too long, it doesn't help that a majority of the new Gacha characters comes from regions already completed in the story. which means, they get no action or part to play in the upcoming new region plot which is disappointing unless they we're non playable

As someone that is also completionist by nature that likes seeing those "100%" markers, be it A Hat In Time, Banjo Kazooie, or any other game, no amount of exploration is too much for me. However, I do have a plan to replay Genshin Impact from start to finish after release of Snezhnaya at some point (to see how different the game feels from a fresh restart), and I don't think I would want a 100%-run again, and redoing all those quests to get required items and access to other areas is going to be quite tiresome to skip/marathon through, so I can totally see the pain of a player that isn't interested in the dialogue. Which is why I highly question the people that play the game with the intention to skip story and exploration when that is such a big and important part of it.

I honestly love exploring in Genshin! Its just kinda sad that after you complete an Area, there is no logical reson to go back to it exept for taking a few cool screenshots or get the last 2% of exploration. I would love if there were some kind of replayable content in sertain areas just because it feels like a waist to design them so beautiful but then leave them in the basement where noone can see them! Another great option to collect a particular character's materials (Boss materials, Weekly boss materials, etc.) when you do not have the corresponding requirements fulfilled is Co-op. For example, if you have Alhaitham but have not started the Sumeru archon quests, you can still get Scaramouche's boss materials for his Talents by hopping to another player's world and beating up the boss in Co-op. I have been doing this for a long time, so I don't feel obligated to have to complete a specific set of quests.

Once you achieve going on a slower pace it's a lot more enjoyable and way less taxing in the same time. Dragonspine was great, in that regard, a compact map with its own fashion... then we had Inazuma, each island being unique and well delimited; then Enkanomiya, with its great ambience and lore; then the Chasm, with its vertical depth... Sumeru is just too vast and, even though unique, overwhelming: the point of exploration is to search for surprises, but Genshin is all about collectibles and chests... I'd like to have new ways of moving around the map that actually feel fun (e.g. very fast gliding, parkour), instead of "oh, let's climb that spot, again, to get that x-oculus", in more compact and dense maps.

I think being "obligated" to explore is a bit of a strong word for it. From chests you don't actually get anything that valuable apart from the primos, and since genshing is a relatively easy game you can even complete it with the base characters. So apart from finding that few main bosses and the lvl up materials, you don't really have to do any exploration to actually play the game.

"that valuable apart from the primos" Well thats exactly the point. This is first and foremost a Gacha Game. If we already accept that Exploration is just a way to hide primos and get some stamina upgrades, sooome times get new f2p weapons to forge. It actually feels bad tha some areas in the game are too hidden in questlines and stuff that you wont find unless you actually not just explore but make weird stuff in some areas (or read some guides).

No. Genshin does NOT suffer from the exploration. However, it suffers on one element: exploration, in Genshin, is not so much rewarding. I know, it's a different genre, but let's take a look at Breath of the Wild: wherever you went, you could find something. WHEREVER. And usually that game tries to reward the "micro" exploration, when you try to search for items and collectibles behind every stone. So the player is always rewarded and he is encouraged to go on with the exploration. The same happens, for example, in Elden Ring: a vast open world, and wherever you go you will find new, unique items, weapons etc.. It has less rewards, but at least they are always unique and new. Genshin, instead, is waaay less rewarding. There are various chests, but they're always the same. They should start to give some new and fresh reward, or at least they should try to stard placing more chests, in more specific points. Everybody remember the chests on the roof of the big castle, in Liyue Harbor, right? Or on the roof of Inazuma's castle. We need MOOORE chests like those ones. We need more chests (not more primo from the chests, but more chests) or more new rewards (for example some new 3* weapon from the chests), which can engourage us to explore even more and to pay even more attention during the explorations of the cities.

Honestly, my problem with exploring new regions is the lack of proper reward. I’m extremely goal/reward-driven when it comes to games and I feel like Genshin conditioned us to expect chests and rewards with Mondstadt and Liyue. With the new patches, the exploration content has been getting really challenging with only simple rewards like common or exquisite chests. It’s pretty inconsistent and the number of enemies you need to defeat for a common chest has gotten ridiculous. I think just creating more achievements and giving more exquisite chests would boost player morale with exploring because honestly I don’t really want to explore because I’ll get like 10 primos in like 30 minutes of exploring.
@DumbestDumbFool

What you were saying is spending 30 minutes running around in a well explored area gives you 10 primo because if you got into new areas, those chest are EVERYWHERE. And not understating the problem with gamer who isn't up to the core gameplay of genshin but still trying to enjoy it, I'm glad you guys sticking to the game, but the game is made to cater people who want to read more lore and stories and to guess and to solve puzzles, to explore and 100% the area. It is sadly isn't made for gamer who min max their time to get the biggest baddest damage number or gain the most valuable mount (referring to WOW, GW2 and FFXIV which is considerably the biggest game). I tried to play guild wars 2 just today and I just can say, it's not for me. FFXIV is fun but I can't prioritize paying the subs than living my life, and thank God people are subscribing because the game is still running and getting even better every patch. Genshin though, free to play as long as you don't get FOMO by the gacha.

I think what mitigates it in Genshin is two things: 1) How long it takes for new explorable regions or sub-regions to actually launch, coupled with 2) how little reason there is to revisit areas once they _are_ emptied out. That's the thing about Genshin. They do drop a ton on you, but there's so long to get around to it, it still doesn't feel like too much, and in fact, can feel like not enough. I didn't touch the first desert expansion for the entirety of the first patch it was out, and yet I still have all 3 subregions of the desert at 100% now despite not touching it for like a whole month or so later. Now the new desert region is the same - I have it at 4% exploration, but I have who knows how long to do actually do it? Probably at least a couple of months, if not more. And the thing is, that's kind of _all_ I have to do. I have nothing left to do in Mondstadt, or Liyue, or even Inazuma. And that's the distinction between Genshin and other open world games. Other games give you incentive to backtrack, almost from the start. That's kind of the whole point of open world game. Granted, if you haven't gotten 100% on a region then you have incentive to revisit them, but the moment you do have 100%, what's the point? Which again, is a thing mostly due to how long it is between expansions. There's a ton to explore but we're doing it at chunks at a time which nerfs the experience in my opinion. I want to know what the game will be like in the future (or even now) for those who start the game and truly _do_ have a ton to explore all at once. But for anyone who has been playing consistently and is caught up, nah, it doesn't feel like too much. In fact, can feel like the opposite. Only reason my new desert is at 4% is because I'm afraid of actually completing it and minimizing my content.

@Luvi khun 🧿 Thank you for sharing your experience. I think that's really interesting how different the game is for us. The open world for you means a totally different thing than it does for me. You're dealing with Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, going to deal with Enkanomiya, The Chasm, Sumeru jungle, and both Sumeru deserts simultaneously. From that perspective I can see how it might be almost overwhelming. The fact you've been playing since Sumeru and haven't even made it to Sumeru says a lot. By the time you do start fully 100% cleaning up some older regions like Mondstadt or Liyue, we might be in Fontaine or beyond. You're at a good point to not hit a cap any time soon. That sounds amazing (that's my kind of preference). For me, it's a bit different. As someone who plays very regularly and since the beginning, I get to explore only chunks at a time as it releases. And as a result sometimes areas are completely cleared, or near clear, before the next chunk releases. Not only that, but when cleaning up regions, again, my need to backtrack diminishes greatly. I mean, there's just no reason for me to go running through the mountains of Liyue. Events take me back, but that's by virtue of the events. It's nothing like if I just had an active decision like "Hmm, maybe I'll go explore Liyue today" or "Time to go see what I can find in Mondstadt." I wish you well in your gaming. I'm not sure if you enjoy being so far behind, but I personally almost envy you, I kind of wish I'd started late. This world must feel completely different for those such as yourself.

@@fullrain8830 No, don't mistake anything I'm saying, and I don't want anyone to misinterpret it or put words in my mouth. I'm not saying Hoyoverse _should_ do more, they do plenty fine - I'm just saying that for many of us, what's provided doesn't sustain itself. This isn't some "Hoyoverse is slow with their updates" comment. They've consistently released updates every month and a half, except for the entire Ayaka debacle, but that's excused. But even so that doesn't mean that what we have always sustains itself until the next update. It's not a blame thing, but it still just is what it is. Strictly answering Vars's question of "is there too much exploration" my personal answer would have to be "no, and perhaps, maybe not enough." That's not some attack on Hoyoverse though. It's not enough for me personally, for others, it might be fine. Which is why I play a multitude of other games too - heavy Smash player, League player, among other games. In short, I wish there was more to explore, sure, but I don't hate Hoyo or want them to work themselves to death because there isn't more. I'd LIKE to have their cake all day long, but just cause they don't have enough cake for me to eat all day doesn't mean I hate them for it. I find something very interesting in this case,being a vetaran or a new comer comes with their apposing pros and cons,if you're a new comer in for example 2025 or 2027,you have a fuck tone to explore,a tone of quests to do,generally more and better content,but imagine getting like dainsleif at that point as like an ar20 player,you have to go through god knows how much just to get to the area and and the boss to actually raise the character,certain areas are locked of by quests and archon quests,some are very far from the starting point,etc But when you've been playing this game for like 5 years you have kept up with everything,you have better knowledge of the game and generally an easier time to level up a new character when one comes out,but at the same time you're trapped in a constant loop of a little freedom in area exploration,it's over,back to the old resin,event ,dailies,log out routine,i feel like open world games work better when they're complete and you have the freedom of travel like the genre intended you to do

The exploration is really only an issue for Sumeru, in my opinion. This is because half of Sumeru's locked behind world quests that you HAVE to complete in order to access it (Vanarana, Lost Nursery, Temple of King Deshret, Khaj-Nisut, Setekh Underground, Lost Oasis, Temple of Gurabad, etc.), otherwise the game yeets you out of the area. It's especially worrying because Kalpalata Lotuses, Scarabs, and Grease Pupas are more common in the locked areas than in Sumeru proper, and those are ascension mats. If the areas weren't hard-locked, it'd be better. Even still, if it were a full dungeon like the Chasm or Enkanomiya, unlocking it makes sense, because it gives you basically a WHOLE ASS REGION in return, so in my mind it's fair. Also: more proper dungeons, please. I loved exploring the Chasm and Setekh Underground because it felt like doing dungeons in a traditional MMO, there's exploration, routing, mob generation, bosses, proper loot, etc. Please, HoyoVerse, PLEASE MORE PROPER DUNGEONS!!! Hell, if some of them were repeatable domains for weapon ascension materials or recipe pieces for crafting gear (I'd imagine a weapon recipe that, instead of billets, uses actual crafting recipes like X Crystal Ore, Y Noctilucous Jade, Z Star-studded MalachiteTM, and A Insert Oreite Hereite.), that would be some of THE BEST content they'd make, and it would give some actual end-game content that they can tailor to not be Spiral Abyss but still be fun.

It's a design choice, you can't have every area play the same, you have to introduce variety and having a quest directly connected to exploration was is a great idea, ofc there are trade offs to this but like I said, you can't have every area play the same. Personally, I really wish hoyoverse just respected players time more with the quests they gave us to do. The dialogue based stuff from dailies is already bad enough on its own, but it just takes longer since we can neither skip over dialogue from a quest we’ve done before, nor can we just get text that moves fast enough for us to button mash through

While asking for skipping dialogues, lets also ask to skip combat. An auto-combat for overworld and auto-clear for domains and abyss 8-12. Not everyone enjoys and have time for the combat so it would be fun if we can just skip it like how we can skip dialogues and cutscenes. No one is gonna force anyone to use the auto-combat or auto-clear so it shouldn't be an issue to anyone. Edit: We should also have an auto-explore feature where the character just goes to the nearest chest or puzzle and clear it. Then have auto-play feature where you can toggle all of this one. It'll use the skip function when dialogues appear, the auto-explore function when the quests are done, the auto-combat function when an enemy is encountered, and an auto-clear function when the resin is full or the abyss reset. Nobody has the time or interest to play the game so let's just skip it all.

As someone who hast startet the game a year ago (at the time Sumero was really close finishing its archon quest meaning its was quite similar to when the video was uploaded) I can say one thing. The only characters that were not able to get an instant upgrade were the ones from Inazuma. And one thing that was absolutely not mentioned in the video: You are not able to max level your character on day one! Meaning levelling up a character is at the beginning restricted with your adventure rank. So even when you are not able to upgrade your Shogen you can still equip her with a good weapon and good artefacts (Something that you will probably overlook at the beginning) and use her for your game quite good. Furthermore one thing. When you are a f2p player (which I am) who has not spent a single penny on this game, you will realise that through exploring, you will get quite an amount of primogems to wish for your next character. And it is not required to explore a region to 100% just to get this one thing you need to upgrade. And finally, Genshin did a really good thing balancing between story and open world. Because in games like The legend of Zelda, breath of the wild, you’re just thrown into the world with no direction and also, no reason to explore it. Having enemies that are 20lv over you and one shot you just because you decided to go to the wrong place first. For more health you have to grind these temples (you need to complete 4 to do anything) that are at random places in the world. And you get no Direktion on what to do for anything. While in Genshin you have the clear story quest that leads you to the different places. Introduces you to the characters. And Guides you through the world. (Doesn’t mean that the grinding isn’t sometimes better). But your not getting thrown into the game after the tutorial and be like „Well good luck“. The quests give you a clear direction (Unlike Botw where you get one random quest that has to be done at a different spot in the world with no hints what so ever to get this quest done.) And when you get into Genshin, you can decide if you want to go on with the story or with exploring or levelling up your character. You can do what you want. Is it annoying to miss a day for resin? Yes but only if you’re active using it right now. Is it annoying to miss a big event? Yes, but to be fair, how many talents of your characters are actually that high Upgraded that you need every crown that you get? As my experience, the stress or drama you get, for grinding is when you plan to get every single character (Which is only possible when you invest a lot of money into the game) and upgrade them to max. Level. There are many videos or people, that play Genshin, recommending to only focus on one team. Make this strong and from there on you can do other characters. And I think this really nails it. It takes in the game a long time to even be able to upgrade your character to max. Level. Another thing is, your characters don`t need to be perfect. This is very often over shadowed by KZbin and twitch. Having something decent is good enough. i could stop for a month and go on where I’ve stopped. I would even get some welcome back rewards from Genshin. And to everyone starting new with the game. Don’t stress yourself. Take your time and enjoy the game. There is like every month new content. So you dont‘t have to rush and get there. It will not run away from you. The story will wait for you to be ready for it. And to everyone wo is still playing and feels its more a burden than fun, turn off the game for like 15 days. And if you feel like it then turn it on again. And you will see, nothing has changed.

I have two main thoughts here: - Story/event dialogue needs a major overhaul. It needs a skip button as well as a back button and log. I can't tell you how many times I've hit x when a character was still talking in an attempt to display all the text at once, and then accidentally selected the traveler's response, which meant that I was unable to read the text without pulling up the recording of my gameplay that my PS5 automatically provides for me. And don't get me started on characters talking to me while I'm fighting, which would be fine if it was voiced but it isn't. Text either goes by too quickly or too slowly and it satisfies no one. - There needs to be a way for players to access areas out of order. Maybe co-op could be the solution: you can visit another player's world to do the event if you haven't unlocked Inazuma, for example. Or there could be a portal that unlocks it temporarily for the duration of the event, locking you to the immediate area where the event takes place and teasing the region to you to make you interested in exploring. I don't think the other regions will be a problem in the future, since only Inazuma was truly locked down, but that still leaves places like Enkanomiya and the underground chasm locked to world quests that can only be done after significant progression. 5 characters (Shenhe, Miko, Yelan, Shinobu, Heizou) use those boss materials. Sure you could just not wish for Inazuma characters, if you haven't unlocked Inazuma yet, but Shenhe and Yelan are both from Liyue.

For me, I am fine giving every area a once over. But then it becomes tedious. You do it and are left with 80-90% progression, and it's so much extra effort to 100% complete for the rewards that you get. I am feeling the pain though of having up-to-date characters sitting at lvl 20 or 40 in my inventory because I don't want to skip/rush and ruin the game for myself. A potential fix I see is having the ability to swap old materials for new materials. But so that it's not abused by those who have a crap ton of older materials, once you unlock the ability to acquire yourself you can no longer craft. And obviously, the efficiency wouldn't be great, but it would be a good way to let 2 weeks players start using their Raiden somewhat, let alone say the Natlan and Shneznaya characters when those eventually drop.

I love exploring. It's my FAVOURITE and main draw behind playing Genshin Impact! But aside from the interesting locales, a lot of it falls into a cycle of repetitive tasks that I've done before in previous regions. Which is fine for awhile, and the difficulty is being raised (looking at you puzzles), but now it even discourages me from exploring Sumeru because I know what to expect. Doesn't help that the rewards feel so paltry despite the effort required to get them. To add further salt to the wound, if you decide to put down the game, a new region releases, and a new character gets released... Well, you'll have to explore the new area to unlock the boss mats for that specific character. This also includes events. If you are not keeping up, you can suddenly feel forced into speed running in order to play the latest event content. However, nothing of what I mention compares to my greatest fear... Getting sick of the region due to daily commissions. It still baffles me how we have no mounts or rides to reduce travel, or a direct teleportation to the commission's location. If I want to speed it up, I either have to rely on a specific character's movement ability, or bunny hop my way there. Seriously, this game would be so much better if we can unlock a sweeping function after completing x-amount of commissions. I don't want to fall out of love for these regions thanks to these chores. Anyone else feel similar?

I always make sure to take it slow and savor everything when a new area comes out. To me it's the only way to keep from burning out in between major patches. I still haven't finished the latest archon quest, Aranara stuff or Golden Slumber for instance. It really does annoy me when events or new characters' materials are locked behind these but I think it's better than binging a new area for two days and then being stuck with nothing to do for months.

Something I didn't know about until recently is that you can join co-op matches against weekly bosses you've yet to unlock in your world. You are still restricted by World Level and Adventure Rank however. So, this is really only beneficial for returning players. If we want to go more into the subject of co-op in Genshin, it could use some more loose restrictions and definitely improvements. > Ping everyone to your location or a point of interest (chest, oculus, enemy, locked teleport waypoint etc.), albeit with some cooldown to prevent spamming. > Color-Coded player map markers. > Show Elemental Burst icon to everyone if your active character's Burst is ready. > Make Andrius' battle arena function more like a Trounce Domain. Through its greatsword, you can search for co-op matches. > When someone requests to join your world, display their AR and WL in the notification box.

List of unaccurate information in this video : - The game has 3000+ chests, not just around 1000. - The tsurumi island boss isn't locked by the island questline, it is specifically located out of the fog. - The seirai boss is only locked behind a short world quest, you don't have to do the inazuma archon quest to unlock it, you only need to get out of Ritou, which is pretty fast. - You can do every quests and all exploration in the game on your first day if you want. There is enough adventure exp in the game to get to AR45+ without any daily activity. The only thing that is time gated is character progression, which is only useful for the endgame system (spiral abyss). - Raiden isn't "usable" until you reach inazuma, this is completely false. I've seen plenty of new players use her without any issues. A lvl40 character can take on the whole game without any issue since weapon level and artifact level are more important than character level, especially early on. - Weekly boss talent resources aren't an issue, there are needed for talents over level 6, which are available from AR40, while the whole story is unlocked at AR35. And then again, it's only necessary for spiral abyss. - New players don't care about being locked out of event, they have already plenty of stuff to do and most of the time they don't even know the events exist. They already missed several years worth of event, so what's one more ? It's negligible.

As a game Designer, I enjoyed alot of things about genshins design but they will be running into alot of issues coming up soon. Besides the things touched on in this video. HERO POOLS getting larger are gonna screw them over in the long run. The materials being on a real life clock rotation is dumb... even though I understand why we Designers do it (especially in gachas). The only reason I see that we can't skip cutscenes is: stubbornness. I worked for a director who everyone on the team knew a feature was gonna be bad. But he just didn't want to change it. All in all hero pools are my biggest concern no KZbinrs are talking about it

@calvinwilson3617 Жыл бұрын
There are legitimate reasons to disable skipping, things like animations, character placements, locations, etc. If you add skip functionality you need to properly accomodate every possible situation or manually disable it everywhere it could cause issues, they mitigate this by allowing you to skip through most text quickly (animations prevent you from advancing too quickly on most of the newer quests). This, combined with the fact that there is no "go back" functionality in genshin quests, would mean if you accidentily skipped an important cutscene, you can now never go see it again I wish they would add a skip to end, but there are reasons they can't just *enable it* and have it magically work Edit: the more longterm issue i see is in the materials being real time gated. You can have a whale spend $1000 pulling for that c6 5*, but then they need to actually grind out all of those materials for the character, weapon, talents, teammates, etc. This gets EXTREMELY monotonous/boring when you are running the exact same bosses that have intentionally awful drop rates to keep you playing I get that they probably dont want people to oberwhelm themselves playing a TON to grind out a character in one day, but instead, we have a situation where you have 2-3 weeks of grinding for EACH character. Just to see if you actually even like them since the world level can only be scaled down one tier
@Shindy117

@Calvin Wilson "players overwhelming themselves " well... I can see why designers would want to protect the player from themselves by limiting play time but that's no excuse. There are situations to protect players but let players play at their own pace be it in one sitting or over there course of time. "Skipping cutscenes" this is something I thought of as well. There might be technical limitations for them not doing it. But in my experience in the industry it's not very common. That would look bad if your engine couldn't handle skipping cutscenes. I noticed that their cutscenes take place "in world" they must run on a script. You can see enemies and background items on the ground behind your characters while cutscenes are playing.

It's interesting that you made the topic of the video "does Genshin have too much exploration?" and made the the core part of your argument about story gating, unskippable cutscenes and too much dialogue. I think the best part of the game is easily the exploration and if you're not here for that then I'm not sure why you're playing Genshin Impact haha. I do agree that the new player experience is pretty painful and I even hate being forced to explore a new zone when a new character comes out and I need to ascend them or their weapon and their materials are all brand new content but it's a small price to pay for such a rich and dense amount of cotent.

For me, I can definitely answer with NO! I wish we had even more exploration. I started playing last year in May and only two weeks ago, I finally got 100% in all the regions of Mondstadt (minus Dragonspine). Granted, I'm somebody who only plays this game an hour or two a day (don't have more time!), but I still want more exploration, puzzles, interesting quests (like the one to unlock Tsurumi island in Inazuma, the "Golden Slumber" quest from Sumeru). Exploring is really my most favourite thing to do in Genshin and I think without it, I would have stopped playing after a few weeks.

I took my time with the game, played every day sometimes the whole day and unlocked Inazuma after about 4 months. I wanted to explore the first few islands first so it took me an additional 2 months so get to Watatsumi Island for the Sango Pearls. When I finally got Kokomi to level 90 it felt rewarding and I was proud of myself that I didn't gave in to the pressure. Exploration is the thing I enjoy most about the game. Genshin is such a unique game that players with vastly different gaming backgrounds want it to be something that is more traditional, something more akin to what they are used to: Gacha players want some uninteractive experience; with menus and big pp numbers being all that matters Open world players don't want linear progression (even if that's what 90% of open world games do but that's another discussion) Action rpg players want some other stuff and so on... It really does seem like Genshin Impact attracts the more vulnerable gamers from these corners, the ones with more addictive personalities: be it collectors, completionists, meta slaves, min maxers, whales, etc. The topic at hand it's just crazy. I'm gonna have to take a hard disagree on the idea that genshin should give players an option to skip all of the story and move straight to exploration. Hoyo wants to create the type of gameplay environment wherein players have a personal and emotional connection the world they're exploring, and they do that through the story quests. Asking them to abandon that for the convenience of impatient players is a little unfair. This is one of those situations where I'd say that if you don't like it, then this just isn't the game for you.

I love exploration so this isn't an issue for me. A much bigger problem is the large and ever increasing number of characters. It's part of the gacha mechanics so I don't expect them to stop releasing characters. But I feel like the cost is lack of investment in characters' stories and new characters being weak so that they don't overpower old characters. Getting new characters is also tiresome, as you need to grind hard and login every day to get them and level them up. And after you've explored the world and played through the story, the only thing you are left with is grinding for characters. I think they should include more variation in game activities (TCG is a step in the right direction) so that you can actually use the characters you own after you finish the story and you are waiting for the next big update

I LOVE the exploration in this game. It's for sure my favorite type of content in it and a huge reason why i continued playing for the last 2 years. That being said, Genshins exploration has some really major flaws i don't see people talking about that often, and to be honest, and they're the reason why some may think it has "too much" exploration. One of bigger ones being the FLOW of exploration in Genshin. The maps itself are amazing, the landscapes beautifull, and it wrecks older Open-World like BotW in that aspect, no question, but the exploration itself can feel way less exciting, and for some, even boring. Thats cause Genshin exploration has 4 main colectables: Chests, Oculi, Waypoints (and domains), and Statues of the seven. Chests feel.... fine to collect, but because of the gacha system only. In the exploration aspects, it gets you NO REWARD. You won't use any sword on it, the AR EXP only helps to get more wishes, and any other item are USELESS in late-game. It doesn't feed into your exploration in any way. Oculi are probably the best collectables in Genshin, and were specially good back when they actually rewarded you with stamina, you get them and it feeds it back into more time running/climbing. Since then, it's.... Fine.... But it removed a kit of what was special about them. TP/Domains are a little bit more usefull, since you will be able to come back there later. Feels specially good when it's anctual good area you will need to come back. Since most of them you rarely use. Statues of the Seven are glorified Waypoints, the map is usefull but sometimes ruin exploration, there is no challenge to get them so they don't feel rewarding, and they don't help all that much after activating it, since you almost never need to dumb Oculi that frequently. In comparison, all of BotW system feed back into one another. Chests help you explore, you NEED these weapons because of durability, the same goes for Koroks. Domains not only serve as teleport points, but a little challenge to break up your exploration, you can rest a bit and try another type of content keeping the experience fresh, and in the end, you always gain more stamina or life, which are both important. Towers are actually HIGH UP IN THE AIR. They serve a purpose to let you look far and see points of interest, even after unlocking the map. And the map feels rewarding because you had a small challenge to get there. Every single system feeds back into more exploration and makes the content contantly change slightly, so the second hour of exploring doesn't feel the same as the first. In the end, the exploration of Genshin feels DENSE. New regions really want you to do the quests before exploring so you have everything unlocked and it puts you in a awkward position, where if you try to mix a bit of exploring/quests to keep the experience fresh, you're punished by barriers and doors. The game wants to do the quest firsts, then go chest after chest after chest, exploring for hours on end just to get items you will need on OTHER PARTS of the game. Theres no durability and no insentive to change characters. So it can quickly get stale and if you dont really love exploring, it will feel like "too much".

I'm a big fan of Breath of the Wild and I think it's obvious that Genshin draws heavy inspiration from it even to this day (cough cough certain tiny flying forest creatures that regular people can't see). While there's a lot of similarities between them like the exploration, puzzles, monster camps scattered throughout, etc., I find myself unmotivated to explore in Genshin despite never growing tired of just walking around in BotW. There's a few reasons to this that I noticed and here they are. (this is VERY long, TL;DR at the end) *1. BotW Puzzles vs Genshin "Puzzles"* The way Genshin handles "puzzles" is very different from how BotW does it. Just like Genshin, BotW has little puzzles scattered throughout the overworld as well as special puzzle dungeons. In BotW, the puzzles revolve around the same set of mechanics you obtain and go through tutorials for in the beginning of the game called "runes". The runes are very easy to understand as they are based off of properties we're already familiar with; the magnet controls metal objects, the bombs blow up stuff, the lock locks things in place, and the ice freezes water. Each puzzle take the same mechanics and builds upon them by introducing new ways for things to interact while remaining very intuitive, like a ball rolling down a slope or a hammer smashing a door open. If a puzzle takes a long time to solve, often times it's because the puzzle is difficult and requires a more clever solution one wouldn't think of immediately. Genshin, on the other hand, does the complete opposite. Instead of using simple mechanics and making puzzles complex by introducing obscure ways to combine the usage of multiple of said mechanics, Genshin either takes the same "puzzle idea" (e.g. match the symbols) and introduces it again and again just with new names and appearance, or it continuously tries to one-up itself by introducing unnecessary steps to ultimately achieve the same goal. Think about it, how many "follow the object/objects to the destination" puzzles can you name in Genshin? Seelies, the triangle shards in Stormterror's Lair, the new blue orb thing in 3.4, the new purple flower things in the Eternal Oasis in 3.4... What about "shoot the target"? Flying anemo slimes, the target practice timed challenge, the dendro ring things that you need Dendroculus for in Sumeru... What's the difference between lighting torches and lighting elemental monuments? What about between remembering and matching the symbols in Sumeru desert, Tsurumi island, and Enkanomiya? Virtually every new region that gets released, temporary or permanent, introduces at least a handful of "new" puzzle mechanics that have new names, new looks, and therefore new descriptions that you have to read. Though, if you really boil these puzzles down, you'll notice a lot of them don't really bring anything new to the table. The other thing about Genshin "puzzles" is that they try to appear harder by introducing inconveniences to previously established puzzles and forcing the player to deal with them, rather than using the pre-established puzzle as a fundamental step to completing something more complex. Take the new 3.4 underground dungeons as an example. In the very beginning, the player is told that the blue beam blows away sand piles, so we have to adjust the device to shoot the blue beam in the right direction or move it to the right position. The next obstacle the game introduces are windows that the player needs to open with levers to allow the blue beam to shine through. Already, this is just introducing an unnecessary middle step to accomplishing the exact same thing - getting rid of the sand pile. Finally, the game then takes away the blue beam device completely, forcing the player to bring the blue pyramid shard thing (hm, wonder where we've seen that before) to a certain place to spawn it; again, just so we can then achieve the exact same thing, no more and no less - getting rid of the sand pile. Does having to find the stones displaying the right symbols before returning to the puzzle to match the symbols make a puzzle any harder? What about making the Seelie stop at 10 spots instead of 5 on its way to the goal? When a puzzle takes a long time to solve in Genshin, often times it's not because the puzzle is hard, but because Genshin drags out the duration of the puzzle-solving process by taking advantage of the player's limited travel speed, skill cooldown, or even the puzzle components' moving speed itself (e.g. Seelies, the stone monument things on Tsurumi island that you shuffle around, moving the beam shooting thing in Sumeru desert, etc.). *2. BotW's invitation to explore vs Genshin's temptation for exploring* Both games have very loyal players that keep returning, but while BotW motivates you to explore, Genshin makes you feel bad for not exploring. It's pretty obvious how Genshin makes a player want to log on every day, but how does BotW accomplish this? Well, the main purpose of exploration isn't exactly the same between the two. In BotW, content is always there all at once (DLCs too if you paid). In the beginning of the game, you obviously want to explore because there's better equipment, better upgrades, unfinished quests, etc. out there; however, obtaining said upgrades and finishing said quests don't exactly mark the end of your journey. Most equipment other than armor in BotW have a certain amount of durability just like Minecraft; the more you use it, the closer you are to needing a new one. By playing the game, you are creating a reason to keep playing the game at the same time. BotW follows the open-world agenda very well and obtaining a reason to keep playing the game is a very natural process. The game is there for you to play whenever you want to and however much you want to, and it only gives you new reasons to play when you are already playing. In Genshin, however, there is a set premise that content is constantly cycling on a timely schedule, and it makes it clear that you WILL miss out on any and everything you don't catch. Other than long quest chains, you rarely get new stuff to do as you're playing the game; you have to wait for resin, wait for parts of events that "Unlock in 1 day(s)", wait for daily commissions... everything is waiting; yet, if you wait too long, then you end up missing stuff. Genshin prompts the user to log on by exploiting FOMO on virtually every aspect of the game once you're a decent way through the permanent stuff. BotW gives you the freedom to explore, while Genshin controls when you get to explore. BotW rewards you accordingly as you explore, while Genshin confiscates stuff that could've been yours if you don't explore. As humans, being told what to do often creates the opposite effect where you become less willing to do as told; while players may continuously return to the game every day, Genshin's predatory way of getting the players to do so can certainly breed dissatisfaction over time. (The whole thing's too long, continued in replies)

*3. Genshin's confidence in the players' interest* The world of Teyvat is undoubtedly one of the most fleshed out and expansive stories in video games. While I don't disagree that Genshin has an intriguing theme surrounding corrupt gods and the injustice in only granting some individuals with elemental powers, Genshin seems to be a little too confident in how much the players are invested in every little crevice of its world. Over the past few updates, I've noticed that big chunks of many events consist of just... characters saying things. Maybe it's banter between Mona and Fischl on how a commoner should refer to the Prinzessin, or maybe it's Lutong making fun of Garcia in a daily commission - For every meaningful piece of dialogue we get like Nahida's revelation that the Abyss twin is a Descender, we get a meaningless piece about Liu Su and his obsession to his own stories. Then comes the problem - Hoyoverse believes that players are just as interested in the random dialogue as the heavy exposition ones. I'm sure everyone here has gotten used to spamming space bar or tapping the screen because there is just no option to skip any dialogue or cutscene. As most dialogues feature no voice acting, half of Genshin becomes just a plethora of tedious reading exercises. Not only does Genshin practically force you to go through each and every single one of these reading exercises by locking precious rewards behind them, their completion sometimes may straight up be the only way to unlock overworld areas or resources. Even worse, Hoyoverse seems to have really taken a liking to the idea of super long world quests that, only after you complete the entire thing, unlock entire overworld areas. Every new region in Sumeru so far has had entire areas straight up locked behind world quests that take at least a few days to finish, and if you unknowingly walk into an area with stuff intended for the world quests, you could just end up running around a massive pyramid wondering how to obtain enough clearance to no avail. The combination of unskippable dialogues that aren't interesting at all and the artificial necessity to complete them is just deadly. ... And yeah. There's definitely more things BotW gets right that Genshin doesn't that makes BotW an infinitely more actively fun experience, but on the topic of exploration, I think these are the three main things I find should be addressed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TL;DR: 1. BotW's puzzles are actual puzzles, while Genshin is just "remember the symbols and match them!" or "follow this thing to the goal!", which are more chores than puzzles 2. BotW trusts the player with complete freedom over what to do, while Genshin tries to make you feel bad for not returning every day 3. Genshin's unskippable dialogues are just boring most of the time, yet exploration is often locked behind super long quests, especially in Sumeru

Almost all content creators miss the fact that you get ascension material from testing the character, mean you can ascend once, which is enough for the first week of the game.

The funny part is that in Honkai Impact you can skip the dialogs even when they are arguibly longer than genshin's, I wonder why they didn't implement that in Genshin :(

I have still not even begun Sumeru's story quests despite being 40% finished the exploration because the hours of unskippable dialog I know is waiting is just too overbearing.

I think the limitation on Inazuma was very well placed by hoyo. It makes sense lorewise, because Inazuma is locked off politically from the rest of Teyvat. It's also good that it's "only" the 3rd region in the game, so players don't have to play as much archon quest compared to if Inazuma was the 6th region. I'm pretty sure Fontaine, Natlan and Snezhnaya won't be locked off, because we haven't seen anything about them being isolated in any dialogue. Maybe Khaenri'ah will be somewhat locked off, but that's still far away

just finished the new area in sumeru (100%), so no, i don´t mind exploration in Genshin. i enjoy it very much. Especially since it does not have a billion icons on the map like other open world games
