How To Pronounce Natlan's Aztec Words

All the words in Nahuatl are paroxytones, so the stressed syllable is always the penultimate one (except for some VERY few cases). Also, if you want a pronunciation of classical Nahuatl, you should also consider prolonged vowels (ā, ē, ī, ō) and the saltillo or glottal stop, these phonemes aren't commonly found in today's Nahuatl variants, but they were present in Classical Nahuatl. It's been a long time since the last time I played Genshin, it's really interesting to hear that Hoyoverse added a new region based in the Nahua culture. EDIT: The -tlan locative suffix means "place rich in...". And good job pal.

As a Spanish speaker, when I got to Natlan, I had a fun moment where I recognized cacahuatl as likely being the origin of the word cacahuate, but was immediately confused because the item looks like cacao, not cacahuate. So I looked it up and learned that basically, "cacahuatl" was shortened to cacao when borrowed in to Spanish, and the Nahuatl word for peanut is "tlalcacahuatl" (basically earth cacao, kind of like potato in French being earth apple), which was just shortened to cacahuate in Spanish, or something along those lines. I'm a big fan of linguistics, so that was a fun little factoid to learn.

Slavs will be cringing with Snezhanyan names for sure. As of JP... yeah, its more wild, but that's mostly because Japanese langauge is extremly limited phonetically. Like there is only a limited number of syllables its possible to make, so a lot of foreign words are HEAVILY altered to fit those Japanese phonetics. As far as I know, Chinese and Korean might have simmilar problem (I'm learning just the Japanese, and my knowledge of Chinese and Korean is much smaller so I might be wrong) For me I'm not really getting angry over stuff in English, as well, EVERY language does this with foreign words, as saying names with completly different phonetics in the middle of a sentence would be jarring and unnatural for the "flow" of speech. I'm saying this as someone who... well... tries to pronounce things as close to original as possible, knowing well itt affects the flow and it's jarring (symptom of me being a lagnauge nerd).

As a Mexican, I don't think we pronounce 'Coatepec' the way you did, probably because it's an actual city in Veracruz. However, you nailed 'Citlali'! It was tough to overlook how it was pronounced in the game (as 'SIT-LAH-LEE,' which is incorrect). I can't speak for all the other names/words, even though we were taught Nahuatl in school. I personally pronounce them differently (like putting a strong emphasis on 'TLÁN'), but I could be wrong. There's an NPC which is my favorite one because his name is Tepache, which is an ancient alcoholic beverage made from fermented fruits or corn. Thank you so much for sharing and educating others! 💖

I can confirm that, i literally live 15min from Coatepec, and the pronunciation is Coa-te-PEC, also the same with Az-TLAN (the location you show is kind of wrong, because is legendary fabled land far in the north without an exact location, similar how dark souls lore uses "far in the north") , the stressed syllable is at the end, in all words in Spanish or prehispánic languages is pretty important where do u use the stressed syllable even on those that don't have a tilde (visible accent) , is the difference from "PApa" (potato) and "paPÁ" (dad/fsther)

Just like how "ch" is actually "t" + "sh", "tl" is "t" + "l" but this "l" sounds like some weirdly pronounced "sh" or "s" - the tongue is in the position to make the "l" sound, but you try pronouncing "s" at the same time. At least, that's how I'd describe that "l" sound, from a phonetics POV.

I play genshin with Chinese text. Tequemecan valley is "坚岩隘谷" in Chinese text. Direct translation is "hard rock/stone narrow valley" in English. Hope this may help.

Especially with phonemes like the /ʔ/ glottal stop (aka saltillo, e.g. tlaHtolli), the /t͡ɬ/ (e.g. aTL), the / ɬ/ (e.g. nokaL), or the -UH sound. He visto gente que pronuncia la "X" nahua como una "S" en vez de una "SH" inglesa. También el típico caso de gente que no sabe pronunciar la "TL" (que, ojo, no está mal, porque en español se pronuncia de dicha forma, pero si estamos hablando de náhuatl o en náhuatl pues es una equivocación).

So our cultures definitely merged and it’s part of the confusion some non-Latin Americans may have. Natlan seems to be mixing both modern day a Latin American/West African cultures with indigenous American cultures. I don't pick on English speakers for incorrect Spanish (my language) irl, I have a british acquaintance and she struggles with it but I don't give her a hard time since she's trying and we appreciate it. Tepetl- is Nahuatl for "mountain", kohola- is Hawaiian for "whale", yumka- is likely Yucatec or Chontal Mayan (Yum Kaax is a Yucatec Mayan god of wild vegetation and animals of the rainforest; yumka is Chontal Mayan for a forest guardian), iktomi is Lakota (from a Lakotan spider-trickster god), qucu- is likely K'iche' Mayan (derived probably from Qʼuqʼumatz, the K'iche' Mayan god of wind and rain), and tatanka- is Lakota for "buffalo". Saurus is merely just the Latinized version of the Greek sauros.

It's really nice that someone from our culture did this too! I understand since the voice over is in English they just prononuce things according to their language, but I appreciate when players around the world are interested in the actual pronunciation, especially when it comes to character names. I think "cacahuatl" is far from mening peanut in Spanish though. "Cacahuatl" means “bitter juice” and it's the word they used to refer to the cacao fruit in nahuatl, while "tlalcacahuatl" was the original word for "peanut".

A lot of the names with typos in the game are intentionally like that because they're based on mythological figures, so they probably write them differently to make a distinction between the characters and the mythological figures.

I love how I mean I'm not mexican but I am latino, and spanish is a simple enough lenguage that every word just sounds like I thought it sounded cause every letter really sounds the same in every word and there aren't many weird changes depending on the word like in english. The only thing that changes sometimes is the intonation

My Maya is not good at all. I'm barely getting comfortable with Nahuatl and I think it's a miracle I can pronounce "tl" (even for being a Mexican, I credit my dad for calling me a "tlacuache" a lot as a kid). I talked to one of our guys about "Xbalanque" and he says the "-que" has a unique sound to it

Espectacularmente bien investigado. Normalmente todos se equivocan con el nombre de Citlali. Ya que muchos españoles le dicen "Ci-tla-lí" (lo dicen con la sílaba tónica en la última), cuando en realidad se pronuncia "Ci-tlá-li" (con la sílaba tónica en la penúltima sílaba).

I'm sad that the English localization changed the real names completely like ceviche is called some kind of soup iirc? I play in spanish since I'm south american. corn is "mahís" in spanish sub taken directly from maíz of course while in English they used grainfruit which is confusing to me. seeing references to Tupac Amaru and Atahualpa and Yupanqui was very surprising I was like wait.... I know you all! 😂 I'd do the coverage on it but I'm self conscious because I don't necessarily speak quechua (we have loanwords in my dialect but it's mostly guaraní than quechua, not tied at all) even though I can pronounce it because of said loanwords. I do leave some tips for people who are interested in accuracy or linguistics and I think it's a great way to share culture from native latin america

I love Natlan, but here are some very funny little fact: Mualani was apparently the name of a Hawai’ian princess, yet they gave her maracas (suits her perfectly tho, no complaints) Kinich is a Mayan name, yet most of his tribe has names in Quechua (mostly Incan/Peruvian) Chuychu’s name is horribly mispelled. In Incan Quechua, it’s K’uychi, goddess of the rainbow, apparently associated with bad fortune and sickness. Funnily enough, the Japanese version pronounces her name correctly but writes it wrong (Kuiku) nonetheless. (Hoyo please make her playable) Chasca or Ch’asca also means goddess of the stars but in Quechua On the topic of Quechua, the letters E and O don’t exist

It's because they use one culture as a cornerstone and then add "similar" ones around it. In Mondstad, you have German Bavarian culture as the focal point and several others from the region (Swiss, Dutch, etc.) being referenced. The same thing happens in Fontaine (main culture is French, but there are references to Italy, England, etc.). Natlan covers an extremely broad area (Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and some islands Pacific) as was the case with Sumeru (which runs from India to Morocco). There are NPCs in the thermal springs people with Tupi names (Native People from the east coast of Brazil) for example (one of the guys in the Wayob that gives the regional quests is called Caramuru, in tupi means Mooray eel)

Tequemecan makes much sense as "place of stone garments" and "plowed stone land" when you consider the Children of the Echoes are miners drilling for precious stones which they also use in their clothing (though generic NPCs won't show it I guess).

this is so fun because in Filipino we also use katokayo, basically the same meaning with Tocayo. we also use kakaw to refer to Cacao where we get chocolate from 😂 Hurray for galleon trade I guess

As a multilingual, I absolutely value saying foreign languages correctly to at least the nation's standard accent and dialect. No, I will fucking not genuinely say Mon-staaat, it's Mondstadt (Mon-shtaht). It's not John Lee, I will say Zhongli (Writing how to speak Chinese accent is hard). No, not Arrrataki Ittho (that English soft R), it's Arataki Itto (hard R, no spit on the Itto). No it's not Ty-nari, it's Tighnari (Tee-ghnari). It ain't Neeuurvillette, it's Neuvillette (New-villette). It's not Nat-lan, it's Na-TLAN. Also some of the above may be wrong. Thanks for the great video.
