Wow! No gloves is just wild. Thank you for sharing your experience. I caught it last week and all this week I have sipped on ginger tea with lime, orange juice with cayenne pepper and broth. My sister is a nurse and brought me zinc and vitamin D to take daily. By Wednesday I was feeling much much better. I hope you recover soon too!

Hi Malikah. Glad you’re doing better. I’m am physician here in US and also live in Mexico, part time ( Puerto Vallarta). The medication you received is called Ofirmev, it’s an IV form of Tylenol/ Acetaminophen. Fairly common/ standard in the ER. Hope, you have a full and complete recovery. Being a physician, and ‘of a certain age’. I was also very concerned about medical care in Mexico. So far I’ve been satisfied with the care in Puerto Vallarta - in the private facilities, that is. Your viewers do need to know that while private care is cheaper than in the USA, it’s not necessarily “cheap” - and yes , payment or a deposit up front - and they are not playing when it comes to that. Be well, and keep posting.

Thank you! I haven’t worked in healthcare since 2014 so I’m not familiar with the Tylenol via IV . You are absolutely right about the cost of care. Very minor things where you can go to a clinic may be inexpensive but yes, more urgent conditions can be costly . It’s possible that more touristy areas of Mexico have better care.

It looks like your health is improving and that your background in nursing helped you make good decisions. I've had covid 3 times and returned to good health each time. Mexico HC is probably no different than in the US in that some facilities are good and some are sub par.

Praying for your full recovery. I can imagine feeling scared because of the health scare. Similarly, because of the diagnosis and understanding its impact, like you, I would have been concerned about the practices not being undertaken. Stay hydrated, take Tylenol tabs as needed and rest as much as possible. Sis, when better, concentrate on making a connection with someone near your residence or elsewhere where you feel comfortable. It’s important to have a contact because of the possibility of emergencies arising. It would be beneficial for you both. Thanks for keeping us informed. Let us know how you are progressing and I will continue to lift you in prayer. Love your videos.

I also have COVID-19 HV.1. I have been sick for seven days and still testing positive. I really appreciate your review of the experience because most KZbinrs rave about Mexican hospitals. When I had blood taken a few months ago, the nurse's finger broke through the glove. She touched me with an ungloved hand and took blood. It was weird and made me uneasy.

I have so much gratitude that you shared your personal experience about Star Medical Hospital. I appreciate how you reiterated several times it was your personal experience. I too am a retired healthcare professional, Resipratory Care Practitioner with years of ER, ICU& CCU experience. I too never heard of IV Tylenol. Learned something new. I am really shocked gloves were not used for everyone’s protection and how your blood samples were obtained. My other concern is of length of time for ambulance to respond. Had it been cardiac, internal bleeding or respiratory it could have been disastrous. We have not moved to Merida as of yet, and yes we have been many times and have our Residency. We will make the move when we can. The one thing I was pretty confident about was healthcare. Your experience points out it would be a good idea to visit the different hospitals before you would need them as well as establishing a physician relationship you trust before an emergency situation. Now that I know your personal experience that is something I plan on doing. So thank you for that. I worked in COVID Land and escaped it during that time. Last Christmas my husband and I both got COVID. It was not fun. Our internal med doctor put us on Paxlovid right away. I don’t know if Mexico has that drug or not. Learning so much thru this post, I do think it is imperative to have a circle of 3-4 people you can contact for help in emergency situations. Basically have each others back and be there for each other. I will share something I saved from someone’s post a while back in hopes that it will be helpful. Call for a private ambulance not using 911. The hospitals have numbers for their ambulance service. If you call 911 then they send the police first then the ambulance after. You could be dead by the time the ambulance arrives. The private ambulances come immediately without the police. *need to research and investigate the private ambulance companies for your area. Your video post definitely was not too long, it was very informative. I hope you are getting better. Please keep us updated. Prayers for your recovery.

So sorry you're under the weather and wish you a speedy recovery. As someone who lived in Mexico for a short while, the medical care was a concern. It was fine for routine care but didn't inspire much confidence should an emergency occur. It really is a roll of the dice, as there's so much variability with medical care everywhere. You can always come back to Bangkok. Feel better!❤️
@malikahonthemove

Hope you get better, in Mexico some ambulances are privetly owned and doctors have their clinics and have to charge separately. I had a colonoscopy for 1/5 the cost in the USA with good standards. It depends on the hospital.

Sista, I'm glad you are better. Your hospital experience is not peculiar to Mexico. It is the same type of system in many places in the world. I recently returned to the US from living in W. Africa for 2 years. People in the regular hospitals dont eat unless they have people bring food. And, yes, payment is required before meds and many services are provided. Things are a little different in private hospitals, but the costs are much higher. Still, medical services are more affordable than in the US.

This is a pretty common scenario. Without Mexican insurance, nothing happens until you pay. It's normal to have someone with you to arrange for food and medications. I recommend El Faro hospital. I've only been for routine visits and tests, but they are really on top of things and efficient. Not much English spoken in hospitals. I hope you're feeling better and thanks for making this video so people know what to expect.

Thank you for your unfiltered experience. I'm going to do way more research on hospitals in the city I plan to move to. I'm in my esrly thirties, but ANYTHING can happen. It's extremely disingenuous and bizarre behavior.

Again thanks for bringing this to peoples attention. I went to Star Medica once but ai wasn’t even treated in the ER they didn’t have the means to care for my emergency ear problem but I was given an emergency appointment that day to see a ENT specialist. I believe he tried but all the medicine he gave me kept my ear wet which kept the fungus growing. She can speak to my medical history and make decisions for me if im not able to do so for myself in an emergency. She's at Star Med. She recommended getting Blue cross Blue shield because they have an arrangement with them. The hospital will do all the claim paperwork in an emergency, so it won't come out of your pocket.

I will be honest that barring an emergency or very minor medical needs, I will go back to the US for planned procedures and major preventative care, because I get it free at the VA, free is always better, and it gives me an opportunity to see family.

😮So sorry that happened to you, that sounds like a mess. I'm to am or was a health care Professional now retired and was seriously thinking about coming to Merida. What you subscribed sounds like a nightmare. Probably no hand washing either that in itself is so scary. I've been reading and following a lot of Expats who have moved there. So many things I've heard a lot of good and some negative things. I sort of wanted to move there to see if would be easier financially. I realize nothing is perfect. But healthcare is one of those things that you have to be very serious about. I wonder what the locals do for healthcare because l know for sure that they don't have thousands of dollars laying around for Hospital Emergencies. Praying for your health to return quickly and Merry Christmas and GOD BLESS YOU.

Yes Merida has its ups and downs and no it isn’t cheap but you can save a bit if you’re frugal. When I go to the lab across from the hospital their safety protocols are on point! I don’t think this experience is happening everywhere , just that particular incidence they lost all my confidence in their abilities as a safe and reliable facility. If you can’t meet basic safety standards what else do you not do right? Locals have a form of insurance akin to Medicaid but the government hospitals I have heard are very slow and have very long wait times. If you’re fairly healthy then there isn’t much to worry about as the smaller clinics can handle many things and seem to be better at doing things the proper way. Happy holiday and God bless you as well 🦋

But I don't understand why you would be upset if with them because they don't speak English???. Please understand you're in 🇲🇽 the official language in 🇲🇽 is Spanish. Health care in Mexico is by no stretch of the imagination as good as in the United States. When you are put in an ambulance and driven to a public third world hospital you will know. Best thing a foreigner can do is get private health insurance which includes a provision to move you to a private hospital after being stablized. If you're still alive after an emergency visit to a public hospital you can thank me later...

I believe you said you were a medical professional in the States, before moving to Merida. Thank God for that , soooo sorry for what appears to be "poor" and "expensive" health care in the facility. This is a lesson for us all , if considering moving out of the U.S.A to get a "first hand" look at the medical system for yourself BEFORE you decide to live there - because we never know when and if we might have to ENTRUST our LIVES to a foreign medical facility - in an emergency or just regular maintenance care.

@@malikahonthemoveI don’t know, M, I think there are plans in the US including some Medicare Supps, where you can send your receipts/bills to them for ‘after the fact’ payment. I know this IS true, but don’t know which types/plans . . . But then you’re paying a pretty significant monthly… I will be looking into it again, but if you’re at all interested, some insurance guy (yankee) in MX explains all of this and insurance for flying back that is covered, if you check out ‘Almost Retired in Mexico’, where Brandon I think is his name explains life on the Baja Peninsula and elsewhere pretty darned well, and berings in people to interview on medical/health care and insurance etc etc. Smart and nice guy, though he’ll have a LOT more to share once he’s beein in MX longer. I think only three years in . . . Cheers! (They also have a great long term care episode, man it puts the US to shame)

Do you pay for Medical Ins in Mexico or do you use the public hospital? We will be getting the private insurance which is $500usd per month for both me and my husband. My husband is 65 yrs so it's a little more expensive. I'm 59, but if I try to retire early in the US I will pay $700 per month just for myself and that's just monthly payment...not including if I get sick go on hospital. So the insurance is worth it especially as we get older. Faro is a state of the art hospital in Merida probably better than US hospitals. I have heard pretty bad stories of the public hospitals...I wouldn't go in one. I have heard that English speaking doctors/nurses are abundant when paying for private care as well. I hope you feel better soon!❤

Hi, I haven’t looked into any policies yet. When I do, I will try to find one for emergencies only. I get free care as a veteran and also have Medicare A/B. Any major care needed I would go to the US and use either of those. This visit will be reimbursed by the VA foreign medical program because it is related . The same applies for any care or medicine I pay for as long as it is related to my service connected conditions. It just takes months to get your money back but at least I know I will get it back, essentially making it free in the long run . I plan to check out Faro. Thanks!

Full transparency, I have existing health issues as well and have lived in Bangkok and now Mexico. I did not let the fear of that stop me. I know I can jump on a plane to the USA , same day if needed and get care with my insurance if need be. I don’t think insurance would have mattered as my issue was not the money for what was done. I wasn’t paying $3000 though 😂

I've witnessed so many people NOT washing their hands after getting out of them - both men and women (and I can see the men cause some restrooms have the sink in between the 2 men/women toilets so that all ppl use it)... so no gloves at a hospital is very worrisome to me...

I am so sorry you are not feeling well. Thank you for sharing your experiences and a HUGE congratulations for doing the research and normalizing the situation. Practices in other countries can certainly be alarming. Because I've lived in many other countries and experienced their medical practices (including surgery), I'm convinced the US is not the leader of the pack. Both Italian and German doctors told me that the US overdoses everything. Especially prescriptions and procedures, just in case. When it comes to COVID, just think about how the US did in comparison to other countries. We weren't at the front of the pack with those outcomes either. I am sorry you had such an alarming experience though. I recently spend 8 hours in a key DC emergency room and IT WAS HELL!!! Also, even with high-end insurance, it was very expensive. There does seem to be a need for a support system for those of us who live alone. I will be living in progresso very soon. This seems like an opportunity to create a service.🤔

I was hospitalized in Bangkok for three days on my second day after arrival in the country. I was really surprised to see the quality of healthcare be so high. I too have had some really crappy experiences in US healthcare as a patient and as a healthcare professional of 30 years, I can tell a whole lot of horror stories that people probably really don’t want to know. Healthcare is broken in general all over the world because it is driven by profit not patient concern. I try To adjust and learn and understand however, some things just throw me for a loop.

It is your comment regarding “ expecting” them to speak English. No one said anything about expectations however, it is mentioned by many people because it is a pleasant bonus when it happens. So when I saw your video, I thought I would ask in the comments, which I rarely comment.

It sounds like he was using a butterfly needle to collect your blood and he either forgot or the facility didn’t have a vacutainer. Then he wouldn’t have needed to open the tops of the tubes. Also IV Tylenol hit the pharmaceutical market in the US about 15 years ago. The other name for it is Ofirmev. It’s usually administered in 15 minutes and ordered at 1000 mg. I had a anesthesiologist tell me in 2011, that IV Tylenol is actually safer for the Liver. I know this is a lot. You sound very dissatisfied with living in Mexico. My suggestion is, go back to the United States.. I think that's where you belong. I am moving to Mexicofor freedom from the United States. You are making comparisons as if the United States doctors and hospitals are more professional than Mexico's. It's just style and different. When I see people putting their business on KZbin about leaving the United States, I know it's just a matter of time. Most Americans are too poor to live in Mexico, and when they over spend, and run out of money, they usually go back within 5 years. I am not saying this is you, I don't know your circumstances. I am just saying. Mexico is not for everyone. I had to show thousands of dollars to the Mexican government in Chicago, Illinois, before I was given permanent residency. I am so grateful to the Mexican government for the visa. I middle-class American, that has NEVER felt free, until I discovered Mexico. I am willing to put up with things that are not perfect, here and there, for the price of freedom. The ambulance alone would cost you, an arm and a leg. Furthermore, the United States are aware that you're black, and subtle treats you accordingly.
