I have one, it fits nicely in my Fluke meter case accessory pouch. It comes in handy on some of the older boards I work on. I have never tried it on discrete components such as leds or diodes but it is a cool little gadget.

Not stolen. Period. Good product and cheap price, win win for all (except unions in US, that's okay). On eeblog about same great tool the original softwre designer applauded this design and safware improvements they made based off his work. No issue.

This tester does not automatically identify ALL the ICs it can actually functionally test, for these you have to use the menus to select the correct type of device ( for e.g., choose the LIGHT section to test a 4N25 optocoupler). You can then press the Enter button and it will identify and test the IC. This is true for other ICs which are not common (74/40 series logic) where it may appear not to recognise the IC but in fact it is able to test. Really need a definitive list of the ICs it supports. It also tests transistors, mosfets and zeners - but you have to plug them into the right place in the Zif socket! The lack of instructions really lets this package down.

I don't know much about these STC 8051 microcontrollers... but if it was an AVR, I'd be thinking about hooking a programmer up to it, dumping the firmware and running "strings" on it (hoping it's display messages are in ASCII) ..... there would be a list of all it's supported devices in there.... .... .... of course, a lot of microcontrollers have a fuse to stop you dumping the firmware .....

You really said it there. At the core of this sometimes-maligned cheapo device is an excellent tool. The other game in town--the TS-210 has a crude PC-control GUI that might open this process up to improvement. Without coherent English-language instructions and continued tech support, though, it's going to be another tossed-off Ali, Geek, Wish, etc. device that will be forgotten. I have a fairly big pile of ICs and less knowledge about them than I should. Something comprehensive is bound to emerge soon. de W0XO

In my unit, the up and down buttons do the same thing. It cycles through the main menu or any sub menu list in the same direction whether you press up or down.

I can see what a IC chip is by looking at the markings on the top of the chip. What I want to know is if the chip is good or bad so I can replace it with a good one.

That´s what the IC tester also tries to do. Identifying an unknown chip demands the (partial) testing of it´s funtions.

I recently brought one of these to help repair a old arcade PCB and it did find the faulty 74ls139, but it would not test a 74ls163 it just says fault on every chip even when they are good. do we know if there are any firmeare updates for these ?

Sorry. No, I don´t. Firmware updates for mostly undocumented chinese devices are very rare (to say the least) :-) You usually get them "as is" without any support, documentatiotn etc and most of them are not open source. If you are lucky there is perhaps somewhere a forum on the WWW where this thing is dealt with.

Of course the tester cannot tell you which type of opamp it is testing! Only a human brain or a million-dollar tester could do that.

Is this a question or a statement? If you want to know if the tester can find out the type of OpAmp: No tester in the world can do that. That is of xourse impossible.

It can only identify an IC if it is basically working. And a bad IC can´t be identified. Of course it cannot check if the individual specs of an IC are met.

It will only give you the same number identifier, probably if your IC is short-circuit or opened it will say not found..LOL . But if your IC is partially faulty, it will keep displaying the IC number identifier. So you will be having probably a good or bad IC to deal with it...LOL

You can never be 100% sure, that an IC is 100% within all its specs with such a simple tester. The main purpose is identifying and testing the basic functionality of a chip. Perhaps someone can find the original project for this IC-tester. I´m pretty sure that it´s a rip-off of an (open-source) project from a clever maker which the chinese made into a commercial product. There one could find out more about the algorithm of the test-routines and the limitations.

No. The component tester only tests passives and single semiconductors. Not ICs :-)
