Revisiting this video, makes me happy about my first Swiss watch purchase. Steel for its utilIty and affordability, day and date for convenience, and pilots watch for legibility. Historic brand is a plus, and under $1000. Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Day Date checked all the boxes.

I enjoy your videos, and looking at these amazing watches, but if most of us spend £5000 on a watch, it is easy to end up regretting it. If you have to worry about price, the money is much better spent elsewhere, for example paying some mortgage off!

@Anonymous A watch is only worth what someone else is willing to pay you for it on the day you actually decide to sell it. If all the Rolex owners in the world decided to sell on the same day the prices would fall, and I say this as a Rolex owner. If you have to worry about cost, you shouldn't be spending £5000 on a watch.

I obsessed and obsessed over a watch for the last 6 years! Last month I finally saved up all of the money and pulled the trigger and bought my Grail Watch! NOMOS Metro Ref. 1101! Long term ownership was an important factor and I am happy that the maintenance costs aren't exorbitant. After that long of waiting, there is no buyer's remorse. I did in the meantime buy a handful of affordable watches that I hoped would scratch that itch but alas, no. I needed this watch! It will always be my favorite!

Longines or Tissot as well as some Bulovas (Curv or Lunar Pilot) or even Hamilton are lovely first watches. Oris is great as well. Seiko also makes some nice options as do micro-brands but for a novice they probably won't know good spec and value micro-brands. That said one should buy what they like. The one thing that holds me back from recommending Seiko (although I own a few) is that their prices are inflating and the specs often aren't even as good as Orient (Epson-Seiko) ... now Grand Seiko is a whole other kettle of fish .. but they aren't a beginner luxury brand.

When you're buying your first watch, I think the most important thing is to figure out what you want in a watch. For example I almost never dress up so I looked for a rugged and legible tool watch I can wear with almost everything and not worry about babying it. But that set of needs is very different from someone who's in a suit every day for work. And some people just want a damn rolex, and that's fine too But I only just bought my first real watch (IWC Pilot Mark XVIII) so take that with a grain of salt

A lot of heated debate in the comments. I think it looks beautiful, at least without the macro. I’ve also seen some Rolex videos (Explorer II particularly, which I also love) looking not so sharp up close , especially compared to Grand Seiko which seems to rule in finish sub $10,000. I’m biased though as I love Oris and own 3. Not so sure I’d go for an Oris dress watch though. I have a fabulous old diver, a great chrono and a Pro Pilot Air Racing Vi that I think is perfect. Generally Oris are great value for money, look good and are built to last. Their adverts used to be based on that. Great review.

This watch reminds me of seeing a girl from far away in a nightclub when you're feeling drunk and amorous. From far away, she looks incredible; classy, elegant, you would be proud to have her on your arm. But by the time you're up close and personal though, you realise that she's not all that; she's not exactly spotless, chipped nail polish and the makeup is cheap and tacky and you worry about what lurks beneath the facade. Wow, a lot of the comments sound like off putting snobbery. I have seen this watch in person. (no, not on my wrist), and it is stunning. Not to mention the other 11X calibers, especially with the blue dial. It just could be this particular watch coming from a bad owner. It seems as if people are put off by the price because they are not used to seeing Oris in this price range. Show me another 10 day, in-house, hand wind power reserve that doesn't command this price range, if not more. Perhaps one should learn the history of Oris first. Is this a first-timers watch? No (unless one has done their research), but neither is a Rolex. But hey if you want to be a snob, Rolex is perfect for you. Personally, Rolex is a never watch for me.

@covfefe I wholeheartedly agree, I have this watch, and I’m an experienced collector, I have absolutely 0 regrets, the caliber is stunning and it’s constantly running +2 s/d, perhaps 3-4 in a busy day (I set the time very day with the atomic time), and the power reserve it’s absolutely phenomenal, sometimes I forgot that this is an hand wound movement, you pick it up and wear it like it was a quartz, because it’s running forever ! I have a good collection and it’s always annoying to reset the perfect time and wound my watches, but this oris, it just doesn’t need to, it was fully charger in the US and it was sent to me (in Italy) and the watch was still running with 1 day of PR left! I call it impressive, also I purchased it for 2200$ and the price was absolutely too good to let it go away from me

Great film! It was however (for understandable reasons here) another film extolling the virtue of 'in house' movements. The ETA's of this industry do provide fabulous products to the watchmakers of Europe - can you celebrate them and their contribution together with modifications by the brands they work with, as well as the current fad for 'in house' movements? Engineering skill is not bettered simply because it is 'in house' after all - ETA must surely be producing some of the most resilient movements even compared with the current favorite brands? I for one would love a film dealing with this issue!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the closer I look at this watch, the less impressed I am. The numbering on the power meter looks like someone did it by hand with an airbrush and tiny stencil. The numbers shouldn't look like they were blown down into the texturing, they should sit on top of it. Also, that movement may be in-house, but I saw several instances of the engaging teeth being either unlevel, or of varying thickness. It doesn't look the part on a £5000 watch. I'm just a newcomer to the scene, but I find it odd that these items were considered acceptable at this price point. It's beautiful at arm's length, though.

I have the Save the Ocean Samurai graduation blue dial. Great watch and has relegated two Rolex and a Chrono to the watch box. My first experience of Oris back in the 70’s which was replaced 3 times before a refund. So tainted my view.

This video seems a tad cynical to me. Suggest someone getting into watches buys an Oris as his first watch? Sure, why not? And then when he realizes, all of two months later, that he actually wanted to buy a ROLEX then he can go back to Watchfinder and be double-screwed: (1.) by the haha-amount they will give him back for that Oris; (2.) by the obscene premium they will screw out of him for that Rolex...🙄

The non-linear power reserve and 10 day main spring are unbelievable at this price point. Just don't look too closely........thanks for another great video!

Finishing is rough on this model, really rough. 10 days power reserve is nice and I like the dial layout. Size isn't for me. Not the best watch to show off Oris given the finishing

My $130 Orient Bambino has better finished hands than this. I expect better from Oris, especially for one of their more premium models.
@bighands69
@bighands69 3 жыл бұрын
No it is not. The Bambino is a great watch especially at the price but it is not comparable to a watch that much more expensive. Orient watches are like watches of years gone by in that they were well made and at a good price.
@bradentraub

@@bighands69 When I look at my bambino's hands under macro, they look significantly better than this. I also own expensive watches, I understand perfectly that Orient watches are budget, but that doesn't change the fact that my bambino has better finished hands than the Oris in this video. I think its very funny that you think you can tell me information about MY own watch lol.

@@theonlyredspecial i already have it, stainless steel, white dial, the power reserve it’s absolutely impressive, you really forgot about winding the watch, the precision is stated by the Timegrapher at +2s/d with a very good amplitude, the watch is big but wear small considering it’s thickness, it’s fantastic, money really well spent

I am really not impressed. 43mm is too large, the asymmetrical power reserve indicator annoys me, the finishing is subpar, the beat rate is low and the price positions this watch among real giants. Finally, the watch back is nothing to look at. A huge mainspring and a brushed surface for 12.000 euros? Next review please...

Replace the dented camera with the classic Asahi Pentax Spotmatic. Preferably the black body one. This one has a plastic tip on the transport handle and a cheap rubber focusing grip ring on the lens. Not the quality to match the watches.
