Longines or Tissot as well as some Bulovas (Curv or Lunar Pilot) or even Hamilton are lovely first watches. Oris is great as well. Seiko also makes some nice options as do micro-brands but for a novice they probably won't know good spec and value micro-brands. That said one should buy what they like. The one thing that holds me back from recommending Seiko (although I own a few) is that their prices are inflating and the specs often aren't even as good as Orient (Epson-Seiko) ... now Grand Seiko is a whole other kettle of fish .. but they aren't a beginner luxury brand.

When you're buying your first watch, I think the most important thing is to figure out what you want in a watch. For example I almost never dress up so I looked for a rugged and legible tool watch I can wear with almost everything and not worry about babying it. A lot of heated debate in the comments. I think it looks beautiful, at least without the macro. I’ve also seen some Rolex videos (Explorer II particularly, which I also love) looking not so sharp up close , especially compared to Grand Seiko which seems to rule in finish sub $10,000. I’m biased though as I love Oris and own 3. Not so sure I’d go for an Oris dress watch though. I have a fabulous old diver, a great chrono and a Pro Pilot Air Racing Vi that I think is perfect. From far away, she looks incredible; classy, elegant, you would be proud to have her on your arm. Wow, a lot of the comments sound like off putting snobbery. I have seen this watch in person. (no, not on my wrist), and it is stunning. Not to mention the other 11X calibers, especially with the blue dial. It just could be this particular watch coming from a bad owner. It seems as if people are put off by the price because they are not used to seeing Oris in this price range. Show me another 10 day, in-house, hand wind power reserve that doesn't command this price range, if not more. Perhaps one should learn the history of Oris first. Is this a first-timers watch? No (unless one has done their research), but neither is a Rolex. But hey if you want to be a snob, Rolex is perfect for you. Personally, Rolex is a never watch for me.

@covfefe I wholeheartedly agree, I have this watch, and I’m an experienced collector, I have absolutely 0 regrets, the caliber is stunning and it’s constantly running +2 s/d, perhaps 3-4 in a busy day (I set the time very day with the atomic time), and the power reserve it’s absolutely phenomenal, sometimes I forgot that this is an hand wound movement, you pick it up and wear it like it was a quartz, because it’s running forever ! I have a good collection and it’s always annoying to reset the perfect time and wound my watches, but this oris, it just doesn’t need to, it was fully charger in the US and it was sent to me (in Italy) and the watch was still running with 1 day of PR left! I call it impressive, also I purchased it for 2200$ and the price was absolutely too good to let it go away from me

The ETA's of this industry do provide fabulous products to the watchmakers of Europe - can you celebrate them and their contribution together with modifications by the brands they work with, as well as the current fad for 'in house' movements? Engineering skill is not bettered simply because it is 'in house' after all - ETA must surely be producing some of the most resilient movements even compared with the current favorite brands? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the closer I look at this watch, the less impressed I am. The numbering on the power meter looks like someone did it by hand with an airbrush and tiny stencil. The numbers shouldn't look like they were blown down into the texturing, they should sit on top of it. Also, that movement may be in-house, but I saw several instances of the engaging teeth being either unlevel, or of varying thickness. It doesn't look the part on a £5000 watch. I'm just a newcomer to the scene, but I find it odd that these items were considered acceptable at this price point. It's beautiful at arm's length, though.

I am really not impressed. 43mm is too large, the asymmetrical power reserve indicator annoys me, the finishing is subpar, the beat rate is low and the price positions this watch among real giants. Finally, the watch back is nothing to look at. A huge mainspring and a brushed surface for 12.000 euros? Next review please...

Oris really need to reduce their case sizes to attract more wrists for versatile wear.

Can you do a Raymond Weil segment!

Replace the dented camera with the classic Asahi Pentax Spotmatic. Preferably the black body one. This one has a plastic tip on the transport handle and a cheap rubber focusing grip ring on the lens. Not the quality to match the watches.

I'd go for IWC for that money, all day. This Oris is impressive though.

Give me a solid rose gold watch from iwc on this price with 10 days power reserve

So you've got an Oris to flog?

It may be a good looking watch but looking at it through a macro makes it look worse than the $300 Seiko I saw in another video of yours I’ve just watched,

Seiko Presage SRPE43. Please.

@@G.D.goodwill SRPB43 is gorgeous. SRPE43 is the watch of my dreams (literally). I don't know how Seiko does it. They make the best looking dials in the industry. Period.
