I'm surprised that Ricky has such an unwavering trust in the medical profession. I wonder if he would have thought the same had he lived in the middle ages. Sure, they've come a long way since then, but surely Ricky is aware that there is much more to learn. This would imply a certain amount of ignorance from modern medicine that does not warrant unwavering trust.

He's not wrong about how quick doctors are to get you to drop your pants. My dad had a sore knee and after a month or so of it not getting better, he finally went to a doctor. The doc figured out that my dad had (a) great insurance and (b) hadn't seen any doctors in a long time, so all of a sudden, there were referrals upon referrals. It got to the point where they were doing a colonoscopy on him. "Can you see my knee from in there?" "What?" "This all started because my knee was hurting." "Then why are you here?" "I thought you people knew! This wasn't my plan!"

Questioning everything doesn't mean disagreeing with everything.
@oliverholmes-gunning53722 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between questioning and disagreeing. For example, if a doctor gives me a prescription I ALWAYS read the prospectus, for the simple reason that doctors are overworked and often make mistakes (it's happened to me at least 3 times, once when I was in hospital and if the mistake hadn't been spotted I could have been dead in 24 hours because I was being given saline instead of antibiotics- and this was in a top-of-the-range private hospital). That doesn't mean I think I know more about medicine that a doctor who's had 7 years' training, it just means that I want to confirm that he hasn't made a mistake, which happens to the best of us. On top of that, doctors are sometimes extremely economical with the truth if it means getting a patient seen to quicker. When I was a small child I spent a week in hospital in traction due to a muscular problem in my leg (I forget exactly what). One day my parents were told that I had to go downstairs for a very invasive scan. They called up my own GP, who told them that this scan was used only to detect something very serious and rare (again, I forget the name) that it was very unlikely that I had, and to wait until my tests came back before allowing it. The doctor in the hospital insisted that it had to be done today and that my GP was wrong, and then when my parents insisted on knowing why he caved and told them that the machine was very expensive and they were only supposed to use it one day per week; it had nothing to do with me actually needing the test, and was simply a matter of administrative bureaucracy. So again, thanks to questioning "the expert" I was saved going through a procedure that could have caused all sorts of side effects and that it turned out I didn't need. So yeah, while Karl's example in this case is silly, Ricky's statement that "if he's in a white coat and he's got a stethoscope I don't question it" is more idiotic than anything Karl has ever come out with. Again, disagreeing with everyone for the sake of it is pointless and counter-productive. But questioning everything (everything important, obviously; as Karl says, you can't question absolutely everything you encounter for the simple reason that there aren't enough hours in the day) is an essential part of living a safe, full and intellectually stimulated life.
