Call me a bluff old traditionalist, but I think the comments regarding Yamato's resilience to damage from bombing, torpedoes and shells and the Damage Control Parties ability to deal with the outbreaks of fires and flooding, was somewhat overstated.

You wouldn't be the first mostly because it's Japanese propaganda when in reality they had to do a lot of design compromises lost a LOT of there most experienced sailors because the military was to full of themselves and had over inflated egos due to the Ruso Japanese war. Which SOMEHOW blinded them I to thinking there the best of the best. All they did was prove how best to die in hundreds of different ways by American fire power. We may underestimate our capabilities but it's to keep us humble rather then let our ego go unchecked. The only ones who let there ego go out of control was the BuOrd because of there incompetence is what caused most of the submarine casualties

Truth. If only our leaders were willing to make the same sacrifice they call upon their underlings to do. In American history we had JFK and Bush 1 and Carter I think who put their own lives on the line. The remaining since 1960 have been paper tigers at best.

I recall when the diminutive emperor came to visit, hosted by President Regan, (Regan kept Des Moines Iowa and Los Angeles California free of enemy influence during WWII), a commentator said would Regan have also hosed Hitler and Mussolini if they had survived. Yamato was actually inferior to the Montana class that was canceled. 12x 16 inch guns that had more range 47Km versus 42Km effective 28Km v 25 Km and the Montana shells were only 519lbs lighter and fired out only 100ft/s slower. (These are the same guns Iowa class used) So the Yamato would probably lose her RADAR and some of her range finders in the first salvos when she couldn’t fire back even to Iowas. Plus the 16 inch guns fired slightly faster getting off shots at 30 second intervals whereas the 18 inch were slower about 35seconds +/- 5 second. The Iowas had a broadside rate per minute that was similar to Yamato at Yamatos average rate and 5000lbs more at her 1.5spm rate, Montanas would have put almost 65000 lbs versus 50000 lbs and some of those would be very likely to short and hit like torpedos. And we know Yamato was very subject to torpedos.

Who wrote this claptrap the Yamato was obsolete before the plans were dry on the drafting paper. They would have gotten better use from the steel to build the rail line mentioned in the video. The Japanese surrendered because the elites finally realized they and their ilk were at risk. They cared nothing for the peasants they consigned to the meat grinder. All this talk about honor and duty was utter rot. It was a country run by gangsters. The entire premise of the fight was that a tiny island with little in the was of resources could force a country twenty five times larger to negotiate? Their success in China was due to the utter fracture state the country was in, and in the US, British, Dutch, etc territories due to the distance and complacency those involved.

I was wondering about that. But I guess you'd probably die if even only the top 3-4 inches of water got up to, say 115-120 F. That amount of heat combined with cold underneath would blanch you. And just like a tomato, your skin would start to fall off. 🫠

I don't think it would actually boil (as you stated there's just TOO much water to absorb the heat), I was just saying I could see how the heated water sitting on top of the cold water could kill a person. If even the shock from going from hot air to cold water makes them drown.

There are first hand reports of the raid from survivors who tell of Glass, rock and even steel melting, so the heat must have been 1500 - 2500 F, add to this that the fire was not just fire but a firestorm, which would give the effect of being in a blast furnace, but still not enough to boil the water in a canal. The story originated from one instance, over a thousand people were killed after they took refuge in a school's massive swimming pool and were subsequently boiled alive as the water turned to steam. Most of the deaths in the canal were caused by suffocation as the fire sucked in all the oxygen around them.

As usual a great video but the commentary still has odd faults like it's inability to pronounce Wales and the much easier Repulse. I assume no one had told the Japanese sailors that the victory at Tsushima had been over a Russian Fleet which was virtually useless. In terms of UK football it wouldn't have been relegated from the bottom divisioon of the football league in a single season (or that Japan had been keen to agree peace because the war had virtually bankrupted the country).

The Soviet Union was an enemy too). Now, imagine looking at the world map at that time, with little Britain standing alone. "Paranoia?" Really now. The prospect of fighting on hundreds of fronts from the Arctic to the Equator to the South Pacific, in the air, on the water, below the water and on land. Paranoid? Realistic and well-prepared the USA was when shocked into the war. Without the arsenal of democracy we'd all be speaking German or Japanese or both right now. Take just 1 battlefield, the Eastern Front in Europe. The USA gave the Soviet Union: 400,000 jeeps & trucks 14,000 airplanes 8,000 tractors 13,000 tanks 1.5 million blankets 15 million pairs of army boots 107,000 tons of cotton 2.7 million tons of petrol products 4.5 million tons of food Our biggest concern was the incompetent Soviets would let it fall into German hands! Or be sold to the Japanese for $$$. Paranoid? Well, thank God for American paranoia.

Look, this is obviously not Axis propaganda. Propaganda is when you get only one side and it’s served up with the purpose of persuading you that it’s right. History’s purpose is to teach you what actually happened with no bias towards either side. In other words, both sides’ stories have to be told in order to understand the war.
