As would I. But remember that this is the 1920s; until Cora's teen years (~mid 1880s; Cora was born in 1868), everything a wife had belonged to her husband from the day they married. It still caused the breakup of many marriages when the husband managed to lose it all (which happened all too often), but stronger marriages found a way to adapt or move past it. (Ohio, where Cora was born & raised, enacted a Married Womens' Property Act in 1884; Britain in 1882, 1884 and 1893.)

@@aileen694 You're right, it's the title of a late 50s to early 60s TV & radio show. One of the few TV shows that spawned a radio show. Usually it was the other way around. Radio shows becoming TV shows as TV became a popular item in the 50s. Such as Ozzie and Harriet. And many others. Although it "may have" existed generally earlier, I don't know of, and couldn't find any reference to it as such. I had heard of this show, as a kid in the 70s and early 80s, but hadn't seen it in reruns or anything. It is probably a mistake by the writer of Downton. Or else since it is harmless, and such an apropos phrase for the scene, perhaps he knew it was from the mid 20th century & decided to use it anyway. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Have_Gun_%E2%80%93_Will_Travel

It looks like she's pretty pissed until she sees Robert's face scrunch up and he cries. I think it's a good parallel to Mary and Matthew in this moment: Cora is upset but seeing the distress in her husband, as well as the love that she has for him, makes all of these matters trivial. This is what Matthew and Mary learn that night: there will always be things that will come up and cause argument, but "love trumps all."

'God Matthew, how can you be so disappointing' that line always upsets me so much. The guilt Matthew feels about Lavinia is 100% justified and it just shows how much of a brilliant and morally correct person he was. I love Mary sm but she shouldn't of said those words and he looked so hurt after it ugh
@mathewcole7848
@mathewcole7848 4 жыл бұрын
It's two different ethical viewpoints conflicting. Matthew's was deontological - he felt that he owed it to Lavinia to turn down the money, because he believed it was willed to him on false pretenses. Mary's was utilitarian - she believed that Matthew's primary concern ought to be the good he could do with this turn of fortune, particularly as regards the well-being of the family estate and what they would leave their children.
@jasminderpinder
@jasminderpinder 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with Matthew on this one. His getting an inheritance and deciding what to do with it with his own conscience has nothing to do with Robert's losing his fortune (due to his own foolishness). Mary is wrong to think that Matthew should use the money to save her father, family and life style. I truly admire and support Matthew's morality and ethics. At this stage of the series, Mary's character was a bit of a self-serving, conceited witch... and that's putting it mildly.
@valkyriesardo278
@valkyriesardo278 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew's morality wasn't all that sterling or he would not have kissed Mary, nevermind that his fiancé saw them together. Had he been all that ethical, he would have declined his inheritance of Downton or tried to assign ownership to the Crawley daughters. When he accepted Downton, he accepted responsibility for the estate and all its people. That duty supercedes his romantic self interests. Robert understood that obligation even though he was not much of a manager. I do not respect Matthew's excessive guilt for when carried to such extremes, guilt is no more than a masquerade for false pride. Marriage to Lavinia was always a mistake for Matthew. That kiss he gave Mary was honest and true. Indulging in grief was his refusal to accept he'd made a mistake with Lavinia, refusing the dreadful fact that he did not and could not love her and his guilt at her death could do no more than compound the error.

It's more like "How can he put his principles above our family home", which is still not great, but it's kind of understandable. Refusing the money won't help anyone - not a single person. It won't bring Lavinia back to life, it won't help the unknown Mr. Pulbrook's heirs...in fact, the money will revert to the State if Matthew turns it down (heirless estates typically do). Meanwhile, it's not like Matthew would be taking the money out of greed; he'd be using it to save the Abbey for him & Mary to run someday. Mary's still being indomitably self-centered in refusing to acknowledge the question of Matthew's guilt over the circumstances, but there is an underlying point there.
@earlofbroadst
@earlofbroadst 4 жыл бұрын
@@mathewcole7848 It's not just the family home, either. Downton is a major employer and economic heart for the local community, as Robert told Matthew in season one when he wanted to get rid of Molesley. Matthew's guilt is understandable, but as heir to the Earldom he has a responsibility to maintain Downton for the people who depend on it, *his* people, not just the Crawley family. For all his economic incompetence, Robert gets that. (Matthew learns this with time over the course of the show, but I thought it weird he never factored it into his decision re: Reggie's money. Probably because they needed the drama.

I do understand where’s Mary is coming from in regards of using Matthew’s inheritance to bail out Downton. It’s obvious that she loves her father, family, and all of the house staff very much and wants to do everything in her power to protect everyone’s livelihood in the estate. Matthew is Robert’s official heir and seeing him hesitant to save Downton was a slap in the face for Mary and everyone she loves. But her frustration is misguided because the person she should’ve been mad at was her father and his mismanagement of the estate that was forced upon both Mary and Matthew to deal with. Robert was the only person to be blamed for Downton’s turmoil, not Matthew.

At 2:20. Did Robert not have a good financial advisor? The first and most important rule of investing is diversify, diversify, DIVERSIFY. Cora's question hits to the heart of this--why was he invested so heavily in one enterprise? Cora had better sense than Robert in business matters. She should've been running the finances instead of him. But because she was the woman, no going. (Though she had probably learned a lot from her father and how he built his fortune in the cutthroat world of business. This is something Robert had never been exposed to as an aristocrat growing up.) Robert was trustee of Cora's fortune too, so he screwed her over as badly as he screwed over the estate. Tisk, tisk. Let this be a lesson to all of you--do not put all your eggs in one basket. Otherwise, well, unpleasant things will happen.

It's tough because Matthew feels guilty for Lavinia's death and feels ashamed to live out his life happily on her father's money, whereas Mary feels very protected of the estate, as she is the eldest, and she feels that she should have been the one to inherit everything, run everything and protect everything. When Matthew refuses to help out, it just brakes her heart because if it was her, she wouldn't think twice if there is a way out for her to save the estate. It's upsetting for her that the man whom she loves and is practically the man whom she wants to be simply doesn't care about the inheritance as much she does - and let's not forget, it's just before the wedding..... I understand both characters and I feel the actors, especially Mary (Michelle) did an excellent job!

It was SO easy for Mary to take Lavinia’s money. No guilt. Nothing.
@IzzyKawaiichi
@IzzyKawaiichi 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree, there was a little guilt. When he initially tells her he's in the will but he won't take the money, she agrees. Later she finds out that they might lose Downton-- which has been her home her entire life and even though she's the eldest child of the current owner, she's not entitled to it because she isn't male. She would have gone into what was suggested to have had all the makings of a loveless marriage with the son of the previous heir in order to keep Downton in their immediate family. Then she falls in love with the new heir and she finally has what looked like the impossible outcome of having a happy future AND getting to keep her home. Then she finds out her father may lose that home before her husband can even inherit it and even though he might have the means to keep it for them, he refuses to. As far as Mary's concerned, Lavinia died of Spanish Flu because people don't actually die of broken hearts. Even if her and Matthew's actions back then weren't right, Lavinia's death and the fact that she won't be inheriting her own father's fortune isn't their fault. Because she kissed Matthew and Lavinia saw it, even though Lavinia died and doesn't benefit or suffer from the current circumstances in anyway, Mary's just supposed to accept that her family is ruined even though they could not be?

I always thought Mary overreacted so much about this. How is it not accepting money means you are not on the family's side? It's a matter of honor and principle that he felt bad for being considered the love of Lavinia's life when he didn't feel the same way. Mary guilt him into taking it. She overreacted and made it about her and the family honor. It was not the way.

“How can you be so disappointing??” Never understood why Mary felt the need to punish Matthew for Robert’s blundering. And then later when Matthew takes substantial steps to modernize Downton in order to keep all the money that HE GOT FOR THEM for the estate, he’s met with resistance from everyone involved. Poor guy must have been glad he kicked the bucket at that point and didn’t have to save their asses again when the Great Depression came along.
