Lady Edith and Lady Sybill both know the meaning of duty and responsibility. However, being the younger siblings their lives were less "formal" than Lady Mary's. Being an older sister myself, Lady Mary had alot of pressure and burden on her shoulders. No matter who she married her 1st born, in this case George; was in line to inherit the estate and title. If Patrick Crawley had not died/disappered with the sinking of the Titanic, Lady Mary would have married him. Or as she put it, "If nothing better came along." Then Matthew showed up. She felt passed over. Her sister's had trusts of their own. Enough money to make a new life when they got married. With Sybill, Robert gave them some of her inheritance. No doubt the remainder went to her daughter upon her death. Lady Mary was in a perciullar situation, As an eldest daughter she could Not inherit the estate and title. If the entail was dissolved, she get the money and estate but Not her mother's title to be Countess of Grantham. In America the rules were alot different. The family fortune was divided among get the siblings. No doubt Harold is under obligation to run the family business.

Not really. Carson is more of a Father figure to Lady Mary than Lord Grantham really is. You forget as a child she and her sisters spent more time with the servants than they did with their own parents. An hour after tea everyday.
@m.layfette62495 жыл бұрын
@Ber P. I can't see Lord Grantham taking his daughter to the park, playing board games with them, or even reading them a bedtime story at night. He acts like that with his grandkids, to a degree. Lord Grantham may have been raised during the height of the Victorian and Edwardian era, but the rules of being close to your children did not fully apply to all of British Peerage.
@m.layfette62495 жыл бұрын
@Ber P. That was the role of the Governess. Robert didn't really teach his daughters like You and I do today. His children were raised by Nannies and Governess until they were old enough to sit at the table for dinner. Their lives as young girls were surrounded by servant's in some form or fashion. They were raised to "Automatically" sit at the dinner table and have tea in the library or host a conversation in the drawing room. Lady Mary and her sisters were raised for 1-One purpose, be presented at court and marry into wealthy and stately families. Keep up the family show. Carson's admires Lady Mary because she represents Everything he holds dear. Lady Sybill and Lady Edith are a bit too robust for his taste. He may disapproves of Sybill choice of husband, in the end Tom comes round the mark of his 'slight' approval. According to Carson... "Keeping up standards will tell the Germans they won't beat us in the end."
@m.layfette62495 жыл бұрын
I never said Robert was Less of a Father. I'm merely pointing out the fact that he was like so many men of his age. I'll say this. When Matthew died who did Mary turn to for consoling?!? I rest my case.
@m.layfette62495 жыл бұрын
I don't call being an "Involved Parent" if your child spends more time with Nannies, Governess, Maids and the servants. You should re-watch seasons 3 through season 6. Those years truly display the life of a child in the 1900s, Post WW I.

I also have the boxset. A bit more expensive then your great deal. Great show but wouldn’t like to go back at this period… first I would probably have to endure the two WW, second I would probably be a maid …🤔

I don't understand why people hate Mary so much- she was snobbish, yes, but she was kind and caring towards many, in her own way. And the striking difference between Mary and Edith is that Mary wished her well on her marriage while Edith's attention was on the position Mary would be getting. Besides, Edith's betrayal was completely heartless. Mary didn't do a good job by telling Bertie about Marigold, but at least she apologized later. Besides, Bertie needed to know the truth at some point.

Ugh, I'm so re-watching Downton Abbey, it's really one of my favourite shows ever.
@pamelaevm8804 жыл бұрын
I've only got to watch it twice season 1 started over. I've only been able to see a couple of clips of O'Brien and I want to know more and I don't understand why more clips are not on here. I seen the clip regarding the soap and the clip where someone said she was leaving.

Since it was the actor’s decision to leave the show and not the showrunners, in my head Matthew Crawley still runs Downton and is in the castle with Mary in his 80s, with the snow falling and them in peace and love forever.

That’s a beautiful wedding dress! People think dressing up means dressing sexy nowadays, even with wedding dress! But you should let people see you as a person when they see you, not only a part or some parts of you! Women are human, not objects.

Charlotte Balfour considering I've been catcalled In jeans and a t shirt state of dress literally means nothing and doesn't give another person reason to make assumptions on their character

"Love in position in one handsome package. Who could ask for more?" That's rich coming from the woman who later falls in love with and marries a marquess and ends up outranking her entire family at the end of the series.

I don't get why what Edith said was perceived in a negative light. It could not have been more complimentary. Yet, Mary rolled her eyes and their mother responded "Never mind Edith." So what was wrong with "Love and position in one handsome package. Who could ask for more?"

Fancy Brooks Because Edith was a jealous character and when she looked at Matthew and Mary, all she saw was what she had struggled to find; love and position in one.
@thekingsdaughter42335 жыл бұрын
@@fancybrooks3156 I perceived her words as an expression of frustration, disappointment and (understandable) jealousy- I'm way behind in the story line, but I take it that things didn't look very promising for Lady Edith just then, correct? Judging from her reaction when Cora said to her that she would be next (to marry).

This scene with Sybille and Mary, followed by that cruel way of taking the former away from us, really gets me emotional. Imagine how it felt for each and every one of them in that house, from family to staffs. Edit: Nonetheless, This Wedding Scene makes me so terribly giddy and happy. Thank you for uploading.

I can't believe it took me so many years to get the fancy to watch Downton. Binged, just watched the wedding. At last. The ladies in the family thought They were on tenterhooks till M and M got together! I was in such suspence, that was some drawn out tension. ❤ I was convinced she'd be waiting at the church without a groom, recieving a message there'd been a car crash . . How dumb, Lord G telling them they were ruined before the honeymoon. Before they married! Now im anxious to see the lovely Edith marry her Beau. Im expecting that car crash again, or he conks out 😢

When Edith says “love and position in one handsome package. Who could ask for more”, it’s crazy because she gets all that with a high position! And sadly Mary will never see the position that she is marrying into. 😢
