Do older family members still use the "You don't know how great you have it" schtick? I know they did in my day. Because of technology, people my age don't need to make sh^t up for those stories... however, a lot of the LACK of certain technologies made our time nicer. We had things like privacy (you get nailed to the wall for even talking about violating the mythical right to privacy), good ways to handle bullies, better average fitness, eating disorders were mainly starving types so obesity was not an epidemic, people even pretending to be news sources get ruined if they stray from journalistic integrity, you could bury the stupidity of your youth, hackers were a threat to very few and needed to be elite to actually be threats, identity theft was easy to fix - hard to pull off - and was rapidly punished with a heavy hand, etc. Life in our day was hard but we also didn't have a lot of the common headaches that exist now... now, technology allowed even the dimmest people to easily be problems and criminals.

It's really interesting, there is so much to know about cats, but then they also have their very specific personality. I introduced a kitten to my 14 year old cat - never had a kitten before and was afraid of exactly these problems, but the kitten needed a home so urgently, so I tried - and my old male cat just loveslovesloves the kitten. My other cat on the other hand, who is still quite young, could easily do without the kitten, but they get along

We had two eleven- year old cats when we adopted a new kitten. When Jingle arrived, yeah, Shadow thought he was a nuisance. He mostly tried to ignore the little, hyper brat. Of course, Jingle hated to be ignored; so he occasionally got a smack from Shadow until he learned the rules. Fortunately, Demon thought Jingle was great. In fact, he went through a second kittenhood, trying to keep up - and we had one little orange bullet and one big, round, 20 pound black cannonball bouncing off the walls. Its a wonder they didn't knock the house down 😨😨🤣🤣🤣

I'm having this issue at the moment. Just took in a kitten that's about 6-8 weeks old and he's high energy (total extrovert) now that he's settled in and recovered from his surgery. We weren't planning on adopting another cat while we still had our older one, but we found this kitten with a severe eye injury (ultimately lost his eye) and no one would take him, so we're keeping him. Our older cat who is around 12 used to have an older companion cat who died a few years ago and they got along well, but they were both such chill cats. Now this fuzzy terror is running around and has absolutely no chill or cat-manners so it's been a bit of a slower introduction this time around. He's not crazy out of nastiness just overly playful, and our older cat hasn't indicated any hatred to the kitten (just very wary and befuddled). Our older cat has always been a shyer/weaker-willed cat so trying to keep things slow and build up his confidence in this situation a bit more so the kitten doesn't dominate the house..

We’re in the same situation and our older cat is scared of our younger cat now, she hisses at him anytime he comes close to her and she runs away. It makes me so sad and feel at a loss. I played with him the last night for over 30 minutes and he seemed tired but when I got in bed he was hiding under it and charged out at our older cat the minute she came over to get in the bed. @@placid222 We have both male and female at my house and they're all playful. However, I have noticed after getting them all fixed they became very sweet and love so much to cuddle. Both genders are fantastic and their personality will depend on their atmosphere. If you're very playful so will he or she be. So if that's what you prefer then play with him or her daily. Our cats get outside time every morning where they get to run the whole backyard and they LOVE IT. Good luck!! If the shelter doesn't fix them then do it sooner than later. When I have intentionally added a young cat to the family I have always gone with two and it works really well. I used to get two and when they would age and one pass over the rainbow bridge, when I was ready I would get two kittens. It seemed to give a new lease of life to the older cat while also giving them the chance to not be involved in the youngsters shenanigans. Over the past few years I have had strays turn up which has changed things somewhat, I get them vet checked and neutered and if they are a good fit with the others (ie the cat family vote yes), they can stay. Otherwise it's rehome. My oldest is 18 and nearly completely blind, my youngest around 2. There is respect to the old girl or a face cuffing to the youngers. She may not see them well, but she can still land a punch if provoked.

Hi Jackson family. I have gained so much cat knowledge from this channel, I’m so grateful. My situation is a bit different : I have two grey cats brother and sister 1.5 years old, super close! They are so playful and affectionate. This month I introduced an adopted 10 week old kitty with that high energy (orange tabby) . The integration went smoothly and my cats accepted the new kitty. After the transition process they all eat together, sometimes sleep together, they run around and play together and my grey cats bathe him! I thought the bonding was going so well except for interactive playing with me….I have been trying my best to equal time with play but it’s been hard because whenever the new kitty comes into the space to interact with the toy my older cats just quit and walk away. Even when I try and bring them to another room to have one on one , they HATE when a door is closed and are obsessed with that instead of the toy lol I feel bad because they like to play it’s just not sharing with the new kitty. The way they walk away seems so sad. I think I may be overthinking it and maybe they just need to get used to the kitty being around and then they’ll engage with play again? Any advice for this situation where my cats accept the kitty but just don’t like playing around him. I feel bad they’re missing out. Thanks so much !!

I was blessed with a pair I had decades ago. Two males: a cat and a kitten. I went to the shelter for a kitten and ended up adopting the cat that was caged with it. Separating the two really freaked both out. I asked if the cat was the kitten's mom. He doted over the kitten on top of the other behavior. Their relationship was explained to me. While they were back in the cage, I looked over to the pair. The cat was grooming and comforting the kitten. Needless to say, I adopted both. At my home, I kept seeing the cat bringing the kitten to the litterbox. Within a week, he did not carry the kitten, he grabbed him by the scruff and walked him to it. That was the moment that I realized that using the litterbox was not in the cat DNA but something they did as a courtesy to their humans. I've tried to adopt feral cats who did litterbox behavior, only they did so by tipping over garbage cans and burying their mess there or using laundry piles. The kitten grew up to be a personality clone of his adopted dad, a totally chill cat. By year two, you would swear they were brothers from the same litter. As old cats, they were extremely tolerant of kittens... the only cats I ever had that were like that. They tended to pin "attacking" kittens down and groom them, rarely really swatting them. Playing with the pair was not so easy because they mainly focused on each other. The best cat toy I ever had for them was one where they swat a ball on a track back and forth... and each took an end. In a previous life, I believe they were twins.

I feed my kitten right before i go to sleep. he poops, plays then he’s quiet during the night. I have kids so they play with the kitten through out the day which tires him out as well as playing with my dog. He loves to rumble around the floor with my dog, it kills so much energy for both of them. It’s been awesome.

You’ve read my mind! I haven’t watched yet but hoping for some help. All my kitten wants to do is love on and play with our older cat and he gets very aggressive and vocal with him as a result. He’s even taken to growling (those guttural ones we’re all familiar with) when the kitten is nowhere near him or if the kitten even moves or walks past! He’s become more reclusive, doesn’t sit in the living room at night and sleep next to us anymore... and my kitten doesn’t get the picture! Going to watch it now and hope for a solution!🤞🏼

Okay update after watching video! I do play with my kitten cause he has a lot of energy but maybe I need to ramp it up a bit more. I take him outside daily on a harness but it has to wait until the evening when it’s cooler due to the heat here in California. I don’t really have the opportunity to do it in the morning because of the heat and work. My older cat, however, is an indoor/outdoor cat (has been that way since my mom got him at a year old) and he escapes outside as soon as he’s allowed. This isn’t very unusual compared to before the kitten, but he is now much more impatient and vocal when he is not allowed out. My kitten will pounce on my cat to play and is immediately hissed, swiped and growled at. He will also sometimes chase my older cat because he thinks it’s a game. Besides additional play, how can I get him to stop jumping and chasing him? They eat breakfast and dinner at the same time frame every day and their bowls are close to each other. Here is no problem because they’re focused on eating. Sadly, a kitten playmate is not in the cards because it was difficult enough to convince my dad to get the kitten and he will definitely not allow another! If anyone has any additional advice specific to my cats, please let me know! I will be much appreciative!!🙏🏼

@@AllThingsThatMatter You and I are in a similar boat. I just rescued two siblings, girl and boy. My older cat, almost 9 years old, is not thrilled about it at all. They are extremely energetic and want to play with him sooooo much, but he doesn't want to. He has finally gotten so he will be in the room without constantly growling if they leave him alone, and fortunately they have each other to play with, but there are flair ups. I have noticed that when he reprimands them he actually doesn't try to hurt them. If he wasn't growling it would look like he is play wrestling. I am hoping things will get better with time.

This video has shed a lot of light for me! My family now has a 10 week old kitten we just got named Rhys, and a 6 year old cat who is our first kitty named Figaro. We kept Rhys in our room for the first three nights, set up base camp in there while Figaro has his own in our foyer where his food is. When we got home we gave Figaro Rhys’s blanket to sniff for scent swapping and then on the third day while Figaro was outside we let Rhys make himself comfortable around the house. We give them treats when they’re near each other but Figaro still won’t eat them if Rhys is next to him, they sniff nose to nose without swats, but sometimes Figaro will vocalize and hiss, and he has swatted a few times but only when Rhys is following him too closely. All Rhys wants to do is play and hunt and Figaro gets spooked if Rhys chases after him, which we try to not let him do, we then separate and let Figaro go back outside. It’s been less than a week since Rhys has been here but I’ve been trying to find a silver lining or a way to make this better for both as Rhys wants another cat to socialize with and Figaro just wants to lay around. We want him to be able to come back into the house comfortably and want to stay in it. He is inside-outside, that’s how he was when we got him, so we let him outside when he seems distressed. But he also seems a bit scared of Rhys too. So this video has helped give me a lot of insight on what to do going forward.

I'm dealing with something similar, I have a 9yo cat and recently got a 10ish week kitten. Kitten's really clingy and despite me trying to drain her energy with toys and all, she still wants to play with the other cat. They do chase each other around the house, dispute their territory over the 3rd litterbox and so on. My older cat, though, she's used to being the baby of the house and she'd always cuddle with me and sleep near me...now whenever I got some alone time with her, it's always interrupted by the kitten and she's really bothered by it, so much that she hisses at me, or at the kitten, or both, and she keeps her distance from me. I try to get her into play sessions and she's clearly interested and she does play. It's just that at that exact moment, even though we have like 50 different cat toys, the kitten wants to play with the toy we're already playing with, so my older one either loses interest or gets angry and leaves. It's pretty sad, because I never intended for her to feel replaced and I also miss her. I give her extra treats and all, but it doesn't make up for the fact that she's not the only cat in the household anymore.

I was told male cats accept female kittens better than male kittens because they don't feel threatened, it's definitely showing. they aren't being aggressive and just walk away when she's being too high energy. I always follow JG recommendations of scent, making them eat behind a door, never see each other, and once the encounter on a positive vibe w adult supervision lol, yes about cats supervised. Do not ever let them figure it out and try as much as you can it is a good encounter. I was quick to bring the kitten when the domestic was 10 months old. JG knows well and his recommendations are accurate. They will have a little hissing, probably some pulled hair, but it will pay off. Bring a foster kitten if cannot keep another one. My two kittens/teenage cats are now best friends. The domestic cat has mellowed out, much more playful. I cannot have a 3rd, if ai want to keep feeding them quality food. Between cat litter, food, veterinary visits and just the time needed for them, two cats max for me at least for now.

I wish everyone would understand there is a limit to the amt. of cats they can comfortably have.Sometime 2 cats have a warm, affectionate relationship and if you adopt a third boy yoeu're in trouble! It can affect the balance in the household.Cats don't need just a home but TIME for each one. Time for grooming, cuddling, playing and being paid attention to. Also even a kitten may get sick or have a terrible accident and you'll end up with a huge vet bill. Be prepared. to have enough money. If you have 2 or 3 cats they could all get very sick at the same time! Adoption is an important time to really think about having ALL the resources you need for your cat.

We have an older female cat (14yrs old) and we recently took in two sister kittens at 2mos old (now 8mos old) and my older cat hates them with a passion!! This is crazy to see because our older cat is the sweetest cat but when she sees the kitten sisters there’s an evil that rages inside of her that we’ve never seen before. My older cat was a rescue that we took in when she was 5yrs old. So she’s been with our family by herself for 9 years. We thought because she was so sweet she would enjoy the company (naive of us…I know) but now they’re all stuck in the house together and it’s like watching an evil grandma scold her grandchildren every second they’re near each other. The kittens are naturally inquisitive of her but she won’t let them anywhere more than 5ft of distance without her hissing and going in for an attack. They’ve been together for 6 months now and I just think it’ll be like this until my senior cat crosses through the pearly gates. I sure hope I’m wrong because we’d love them all to get along.

Okay..... We had a cat in our house who did not like other cats at all, very jealous kitty. At the same time, very lonely kitty so we got her a kitten to play with and she just LOVED IT. However, he turned out to be a very playful kitty and a fairly large one too but peaceful. As he got bigger she disliked him more and more everyday, he was such a handful. So yeah we did go for a third kitten. Guys.... He was so excited he hardly tolerated the introduction waiting period. One day we had the kitten in the living room with a screen up so they could sniff an see each other without touching and at one point, I got busy doing something and the kitten got out😮. I didn't even notice for a little while but when I finally figured it out those two buds had completely bonded and it's been that way for a year now. So having a young kitten around for another young cat to play with will make all happy 👍👍👍

I have two senior cats (13) and I'm currently cat-sitting for a friends' cat, which is about 1 year old. The young boy was found in a field as a very young kitten and then grew up around a dog, so his body language is a bit different from what my cats are used to. The first "date" our cats had was to see if they would basically get along and not unalive each other on sight, since I know my cats do get along with dog visitors at least. I wouldn't say it was the best experience that could've been, but nobody wanted to harm each other. Basically it was like in the video: young cat wanted to play, old cat didn't understand wtf this other cat is doing here and why he's "talking" so weirdly. That was the first time I heard my male cat growl and hiss, btw. The young cat was mostly interested in playing and exploring and it took a while for him to understand that growling means "back off". Still, we decided to give it a try with the option to relocate the younger cat to another catsitter (or just keep the visitor locked in a room by himself) if needed. It's day 4 out of 8 now and they co-exist way better than on day 1. The young boy learned my seniors body language quite well now. They eat next to each other (mostly my male cat and the young one. my female cat is a grumpy old granny that prefers to stay at a safe distance from him) and sometimes even attempt to play together. However, it is more than obvious that the energy levels don't match at all. All in all it was/is a learning experience. I learned that my cats aren't territorial and they could get along with additions to the family (though I would introduce them the correct way then, with separate rooms, etc.), but mostly that I would definitely get two kittens so they can exhaust each other. 😅 With this, I just wanted to share my experience but also say thank you, Jackson! For everything! 🖤

THIS! I wish he would discuss more troubleshooting stuff in detail. Like what do you do if you did the intro right, but the resident cat starts swatting the kitten, and the kitten doesn't stop wanting to play and doesn't get the hint? Let them continue? Limit the time together? How much time? How many times per day? And more video clips of what "normal" swatting is like and what concerning behavior is like, etc etc... It's all great info, but way too general.

@@sbkmarkel i did supervised together time. It took a couple of months for the resident cat to initiate play. He has enough after a few chases and then lets new cat know he's had enough. If she doesn't get the hint, I step in and play with her. Also, I think that as long as they're not hissing and growling at each other a few swats (no scratching!) are okay. I got a second cat (kitten) about 2 months ago. We are still stuck on just feeding together and playing next to each other. The moment my kitten gets close to the older cat, my older cat freaks out. Even across the room, my older cat is hissing (and growling) at the kitten. Before getting even close to her. It seems like she's more scared of the kitten than aggressive though, as she keeps her ears up. We work with the base camps, schedules, and plenty of affection and treats, but it's not working yet. My older cat even seems to grow a bit adverse to my partner sometimes, which works in the kitten's base camp (the study). Unfortunately, we do not have enough room for a third cat (and basecamp). We're just going to keep trying and might try just letting the kitten roam free throughout the entire apartment. See what her big sister will do...

I got lucky with my second cat experience! I had prepared the base camp and was ready to do the several-day introduction process, but my new kitten (3-4 months?) leapt from the box and met Macchiato (my 8.5-month-old Torti girl) immediately. I supervised the entire time, tried to be calm about it, watched them play, and tried to separate the little boy as planned after an hour. When I did that, Macchiato started meowing, which set the kitten off, so I reintroduced them and they started play-fighting. I tried putting him in the travel carrier so that they could be in the same room together and process each other. Then, they both started meowing again at me, so I let him out. Less than two days later, Macchiato started grooming him and he would follow her around wanting her attention. On Day 3, he started to request her grooming, so she now does so and he rarely growls or hisses if she goes a bit too rough. The fact that they bonded so quickly was not only a huge weight off my shoulders; it was a sign that I had found the right pair of kitties to share my heart and home with. They now sit together, play with each other (and me), eat together, and even meow at me or use the litter box at the same times. I couldn't be luckier.
