Exactly. Using videogames to explore politics and ideologies can make for some excellent stories. Shoehorning in a specific modern political stance or ideology so that you can beat people over the head with it to try and make them see it as "correct" is the primary thing that people despise.

You should watch PlagueofGripes summary on Venom Snake. It heavily contextualizes the story of his character and how heavy the quarantine mission is, even if the soldiers you acquire aren't well known. Despite possibly a combo of Kojima continuing to go overboard and Konami just jetting the game into launch and preventing some actual good diversity of acquirable assets, the aftermath of the scene with Snake just falling to his knees covered in blood when you realize he was originally a medic hits fucking hard. Like thats the straw that canonically breaks him as a person. Also fuck Huey.

Michael Saba did a great video about MGS5 where he talked about how a lot of people misunderstood the ending. Hideo Kojima has said multiple times in interviews that MGS5 is a finished game that ended how he wanted it to. I won’t condense a 55 minute video into one KZbin comment, but rest assured it’s worth watching.

As someone who has spent hours on MGSV. I will say this, i he gameplay is some of the best and the most dynamic I’ve ever played. But damn, does the story suck. I only wish Kojima had the time to develop a great story on top of creating great gameplay. I can only wish someone can complete the threads in the pipe-dream that it a Remastered Metal Gear Solid V, the Phantom Pain, including Ground Zero as the proper tutorial.

The Konami and Kojima conflict isn't as simple and clear cut as people think it is. People don't like to admit it, but the Konami/Kojima feud really wasn't as cut and dry as 'Konami were mean and Kojima didn't do anything wrong!'. Kojima pulled a lot of bullshit behind the scenes and was fired with total fair warning. Because going constantly over budget was ultimately the reason he was canned. Not saying he deserved what happened as he got fired but constantly ignoring your bosses and using more and more money isn't a great idea. Kojima was constantly told to stop going over budget and eventually Konami called it. Again doesn't make the petty shit they did right but as far as reasons for being fired it's a pretty justifiable one... He went over $5m over-budget on MGSV and also went considerably over-time, continually delaying the game month after month and just absorbing more money despite constant efforts from Konami to get him to wrap it up. The game only released when it did because of Konami's intervention. Keep in mind, the longer that a game goes overbudget and delayed, the more the video game developers have to work extra time. And if you know anything about the videogame industry's crunch culture conundrum, _especially_ Japanese video game industry crunch culture, then you know that it isn't pretty. Noodle's video "The Crunch Culture Conundrum" goes into more detail about crunch culture in the videogame industry and if you know anything about Japanese work culture, it's even worse. Furthermore, you had that horseshit he pulled with Kiefer Sutherland, where he absolutely insisted they hire Sutherland and therefore pay his multi-million fee simply because Kojima has a bizarre personal grudge against David Hayter and had been trying to shaft him since 2002. Hayter did literally nothing wrong. Kojima hated that David had become the 'face of MGS' in the West. He didn't like David doing press and fan-meets and the like as he thought he was becoming too iconic, and that the 'face' of the series belonged to him. He was literally just jealous of David's fan presence. This grudge was so long-standing that it's thought/heavily suggested that it's one of the reasons Snake's role in MGS2 was heavily reduced. Hayter has spoken about it before and seems to have been so hurt by the Sutherland recasting that he's said he would be unlikely to work with Kojima again. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Kojima hater. I think his departure was massively unfortunate and the subsequent cancellation of Silent Hills is truly one of the biggest tragedies in modern gaming. But it wasn't unwarranted. He has a long-standing reputation of being one of gaming production's biggest divas and an incredibly difficult 'artiste'. Konami just stopped saying yes.

Relating to that bit about David Hayter, the English dub of MGS1 is one of the best dubs ever in video game History, as it incorporates all the themes and emotion of the original Japanese dub and transposes it in proper, understandable English, while also adding cool new stuff (like the Codec, or the OSP protocol) The craziest thing about it is it was done by one single guy who poured his fucking soul into it. He worked by himself for months, even leaving his family behind to go stay at an isolated cabin in Alaska to really get into the game's atmosphere, essentially putting himself into a state of crunching just because he was so passionate about it Then someone told Kojima that the English dub changed a few things here and there, which pissed him off, so he made sure they never contracted that guy again, and every subsequent English dub of an MGS game would be a one-to-one literal translation of Japanese, completely missing the fact that you can't just say stuff from fucking Japanese in English and expect it to make a lick of sense That's why every game after that has these stupid, memey lines that everyone makes fun of. The series didn't actually get any more campy with MGS2 (well, script-wise at least), it was just terrible translations (especially in Guns of the Patriots). It's also one of the main reasons why MGS1 will always be my favourite. The dub just gets you invested in the story and won't let you go, no matter how campy it gets Oh, and it's also why the Twin Snakes dub feels off compared to MGS1, since they also made that one correlate more to the original Japanese Between that, the drama with David Hayter, the fact that Kojima can't write women or plot for shit, and that most of the best lines throughout MGS1, 2 and 3 were written by someone else who stopped working on the series after Snake Eater, all in all, fuck Kojima. He very much deserves to be called the George Lucas of video games, except George Lucas at least knew when to quit

Well to be fair metal gear survive is an amateur work, ever since Kojima was well "terminated" Konami just had some amateur devs most specifically newly hired Konami devs who were eager to make their first game and you know they had to use the metal gear IP and software to boost their experience they weren't ordered by Konami to do so but they showed progress and perhaps hope that they can fill in the really deep hole that Kojima left behind, they were simply tring to make a name for themselves within Konami, and to be honest they have done pretty well and has done so much to improve over time even as to go so far as to constantly update the game with new content despite the poor reputation that was left behind because of game critics who didn't even play the game as intended, which they all pointed out to be a flaw when the game is literally not a copy of mgsv its just using the metal gear IP and engine and the game mechanics are a lot different, one could say it was similar to metal gear solid snake eater with more of the survival aspect rather than the stealth which is why its not a metal gear solid game, its literally called metal gear survive and the objective at first was simply survive maybe along the way and in future content they can add more motivations and a more in depth story or perhaps use this experience to make their own game within Konami and try as hard to follow in Kojimas footsteps, anyways I am rooting for them and so should we because who knows, maybe they will finish the metal gear franchise when they receive approval to actually focus on the main games, maybe we can finally get some good remasters of mgsv or finish other works by Kojima, they are the only hope of Konami redeeming themselves and I salute those developers and every game developer out there who is working their hardest

It’s not that politics shouldn’t be in games, more so political persuasion shouldn’t be. Like telling your consumer “hey, this person is bad! They believe in something that I don’t!” A bad political game will present one side as good, the other side vehemently and cartoonishly evil and treat everyone who sided with evil like a complete moron and devil incarnate. A bad political game won’t let you choose. A good, or even great, political game will present two or more sides that are morally gray, with challenging and profound ideas that will make you think and question your own beliefs as you struggle to decide who is right based off your own moral compass.

The complaints about politics in video games really just seems to be people not liking the politics they see in certain games, not the delivery as some claim. There is a reason we only hear complaints about "politics in video games" from one particular political group here in the states. Games and media have had politics displayed AND political messaging engrained within them for decades. The only thing that has changed is some people don't like the new messages these games are displaying as times have changed. I would respect them a lot more if they just admitted this instead of pretending to have some esoteric philosophical position regarding politics in games, when I know for a fact they would be eating it up like sushi if it aligned with their personal beliefs.
