An Incredible, Chaotic Introduction for Phabeni & All the Elephants in the Herd!

What a morning! One we will never forget! This final introduction in the initial integration of Phabeni into the herd was full of interesting elephant behaviour to read and had no shortage of chaos. Phabeni had already met several of the elephants but this was his first time with Tokwe, Khanyisa, Fishan, Kumbura, Limpopo, Pisa, Mambo and Zindoga. It was his first time with all of the elephants, with no barrier, trunk to trunk. Here's what we can deduce.
Setombe: A complete surprise! Setombe is claiming Phabeni as her baby. Never in a million years did we expect her to do this. She has never shown interest in calves in this way, only her own daughter, Klaserie has ever received her affections and undying support as a mother. But it is clear that Setombe is ready to be a mother once more. She is showing us all a completely different side to her personality, one that we haven't seen outside of her relationship with Klaserie. Time will tell if Lundi competes with her to take on the role of mother or whether Setombe makes her stand for the new baby.
Klaserie: She is typically rough with babies, but it all comes from a sweet and caring place. She is ever curious and so overly keen to engage with Phabeni, offer him support, by standing over him , even if she knocks him over with her trunk. She is no good at letting him suckle but boy will she keep trying.
Sebakwe: This dominant bull in the herd, and best friend to Setombe, is offering great calm to the new dynamic, stepping in to seemingly settle everyone down, the way Tokwe does. Bulls of Sebakwe's age aren't typically still faced with calves since they leave the matriarchal breeding herd in their teens, but this is no ordinary herd and Sebakwe will likely be a role model in the life of Phabeni.
Somopane: This big bull is happy to settle into the background when there is a lot of activity but he is also equally prepared to be the amazing mentor and disciplinarian that he is and step in to put bulls in their place. We expect Somopane will play a big role in the life of Phabeni over the years.
Tokwe: Solid like a rock. This incredible matriarch showed her amazing fortitude and dependability in this first introduction to Phabeni. She responded with enthusiasm but was sure to keep a watch over everyone at all times, and to offer support on the sidelines. Tokwe is always ready to take in a new baby and will likely be very attentive to Phabeni's needs over the coming months and years.
Khanyisa: Well, she sure got her kicks in today. Between not wanting to leave Adine's side and wanting to knock out the new baby, Khanyisa didn't really seem to know what to do. This is totally new to her. Not only is she no longer the smallest in the herd, and the apple of everyone's eye, but she also has to learn to socialise with the smallest elephant she has ever met. We don't doubt that she will adapt and in time welcome Phabeni. She simply needs to get used to him and to be able to safely suss him out. Once the herd and Phabeni are walking in the bush, there will be less intense activity around the new bull and Khanyisa can more calmly get to know him the way she got to know and love Timisa.
Fishan: Fishan is always a loving father figure for the young ones in the herd and showed his interest in Phabeni in this introduction beautifully as he joined the females, walking up and down with the little calf on the move. Fishan will likely give Phabeni great support in the homestead an din the bush over the next months and years, and be a constant in his life.
Timisa: Like Khanyisa, this young female was ready with her back-kicks, as she tried to navigate the introduction to a new baby. It must be very confusing and will certainly take time to get used to, but Phabeni isn't going anywhere. Timisa is good at offering friendship and companionship to other youngsters as she did with Khanyisa.
Kumbura: This amazing allomother will show her stripes clearly in this moments with Phabeni, now and in coming months. Not only was she engaged in getting to know Phabeni here, but she was clear on stopping Khanyisa from hurting the new baby. Kumbura has the kindest heart and is always ready to protect the youngest and most vulnerable. No doubt she feels she has a responsibility to keep Khanyisa in line.
Limpopo: Like Klaserie, Limpopo wants to be on the scene, part of the chaos, immersed in the experience. She is very excited by Phabeni's presence and does her best to touch and smell him whenever she is allowed to. Left to her own devices, Limpopo would squeeze his little trunk until he screamed, but fortunately the other elephants are there to keep her under wraps. She comes from a place of love, and just wants to welcome Phabeni with bells and whistles.

Phabeni most certainly had so many different emotions. From excitement, fear, happiness, confusion, etc. However in the end, he realizes that this is his new family. The presence of the "mothers" Lundi, Setombe and Matriarch Tokwe seem to have given some peace. Setombe has been incredible and supportive and has become such a wonderful protective mom to Phabeni. I'm sure Lundi appreciates the support to her foster baby as well. The younger ones Pisa, Timisa and Khanyisa are excited and don't know how to react. They see a new baby and don't know how to behave around him. It will get better in time once they see him more and more. I am so in love with Kumbura. She is an amazing allomother. She is ensuring that Khanyisa still feels loved but at the same time is protecting little Phabeni. She is an amazing big sister. She is such an incredible nanny. All in all, it was exciting, scary and beautiful. Phabeni will gradually learn that he is safe and the HERD with the guidance of Setombe and Lundi and Tokwe plus bulls Jabulani, Sebakwe and Samopane will maintain peace in this new transition for Phabeni. This was an intense video. I found myself giving instructions to the ellies as if I was with the carers. So proud of Kumbura for her actions to block Khanyisa, staying true to her allomother role of protection. She stayed focused. Tokwe seemed to accept Setombe's new mom role while she protected and watched over the herd rather try to steal the calf. Lundi took a mild shot at walking away with Phabeni but I think she's accepted that he chose Setombe and wont challenge her and Sebakwe whose great move standing with tusks over Setombe and guarding was quite clear. I think he knows this boy is his to guide and protect now via Setombe. Timisa surprised me. Khanyisa, I expected. Funny how she didn't want Adine even close to baby. Klaserie chose food rather than stand with her mother to block the others. Youth! Now that I don't need a sedative anymore, I'm going to watch again. Can't wait to hear what elephant voices have to say about these behaviors in their future podcasts. Bravery awards to the Herd team. It must have been terrifying even knowing all would end well.

Oh my God. I'm so glad I got to see this!! I'm so moved. What a beautiful day for Phabeni❤. They're certainly happy she's here! (And I hate to say this, but I think Setombe is the little one's Mama no matter what the plan was, lol). To me, it almost looked like Khanysa was backing into Adine to protect her from the chaos, particularly at the beginning. Wow. This was amazing and at times felt I was holding my breath. Did feel a bit sad for Khynasia ,as she knows she's not the baby anymore, but we all still love her so much. My heart was in my throat the entire time, with all the mama elephants vying to protect their new baby. Khanisa was a pill wasn't she? Reminds me of the video where Bubi gave Timisa her comeuppance, that Timisa was no longer the baby when Khanisa was introduced. Do we have Bubi on standby? My granddaughter asked her mom after a few days to put the baby back in her belly, mom had a C-section so, the daughter said, just ask grandma to sew your belly back just like before, it was more fun. Today she is a fantastic big sister, she even understands the baby's language and traduce for me.

It is because khanyisa was badly injured. They needed time for her to heal before introduce her to the herd. Phabeni was not injured at all and is healthy.

Khanyisa was so much more fragile than Phabeni With the extent of her injuries and how small she was compared to Phabeni He is quite robust (quicker I mean) compared to our little miss Sunshine But yes also can't believe he is being introduced already feels like only weeks ago he arrived !

I love you my Fishan and wish I was there, my eyes are secreting and wil have to rewatch, you can see how much Khanysia has really grown with seeing our Baby boy, so much protection and love with much compassion right here Oh baby K Adine has love for all of you, it seems overwhelming but I think it has gone well, Timisa just had poor timing and stopped the back kicks, Lundi and Fishan always reliable in times of stress. Well done Kambura keeping the lil miss mischief from hurting our Boy again, she does not need to be jealous there is love for all and always will be. I love the dynamics within the herd, the secreting from the temporal gland, be it stress or excitement, the pushing around to see who can be Phabeni's allomother, Khanyisa is hysterically funny wanting to oust the poor little guy from her position as 'baby of the herd, and just the joys of watching the ellies of Jabulani do what they do best, welcoming a new member. I must admit I held my breath a few times but it was an amazing experience. My cup is overflowing and I say we'll done to Adone and the entire team, carers and elephants for accepting this baby and nurturing him like you did and are still doing for Khanyisa. Bless you all. I hope that Adina will never let Khanyisa feel that she is less important to her, because that would be very painful. You can see the special bond, especially when Khanyisa reacts with her eyes when she is petted on the head. He is still my favorite elephant. Even when she grows up, she will be a little Khanyisa to me. I think both spoiled students, Adin and Camisa, will have trouble accepting their new little rival for affection. I think I would react the same way

What a nerve wracking experience this is. Timisa and Khanyisa's jealousy is cute, but can be so dangerous. Kumbura is such a gift. Good on all involved as these situations can end in disasters. I've seen countless older siblings of many different animals, play with the new youngins to death, not realizing their own strength.

I will always have a special place in my heart for Kumbura for her 100% devotion to Khanyisa + Timisa, ie: during the heavy rains when Kumbura was so distraught for their (K+T) safety, standing guard to help them, as well as on other occasions. Now, intervening to block her beloved Khanyisa, her favorite ellie, from hurting Phabeni. That is A-MA-ZING!!! My heart was in my throat the whole time! I was afraid for little Phabeni whenever we heard his fearful screams under all those gigantic feet! But the calmer heads of the herd prevailed and all went well considering the emotional chaos. Sure going to have to keep an eye on Khanyisa!

Phabeni is soooooo happy, our little baby boy, he knows he has a wonderful family and playmates too the young sisters in the herd will play with him a LOT, khanyisa wanted to get near but they all made sure to put a wall around the youngsters that dont know how to deal with babies and are too rough, but khanyisa will learn she will learn and will be taught by all the females how to behave im sure Timisa as well and her back kicks absolutely cracks me up 🤣 also mambo eating blissfully unaware of the commotion🤣, its just like our own human families we all have the same characters right? this was beautiful thank you for showing us its absolutely priceless thank you thank you

I LOVE how the older elephants protected this little guy from the jealous kicks and push ins he was getting. Its not easy losing your "baby of the family" status!! And, even in their protection, they were VERY gentle with them...pushing and blocking....these beautiful huge animals are so very gentle...and seem to understand that the older "toddlers" will be jealous and they just step in to control them without malice toward the jealous ones. He'll be part of the herd in no time! Very nice video!!! ❤️❤️🐘🐘❤❤

Khanyisa reminds me of my 10-year-old daughter when I had my newborn grandson in my house to look after him she will get so mad because I would tend to him and not listen to her as much. she wasn’t really in the babies. She wanted to go to the local stores and shop, and I had to stay home and take care of a newborn.😂

Poor Khanyisa. We all at one time have felt a bit of jealousy. She's very fond of Adina. My mom told me that when her parents brought her home from the hospital, her sister, who was around 4 years-old at the time, felt threatened and was quite jealous of no longer being the center of attention. I've seen jealousy in other species of animals.

25:36 Setombe gave Khanyisa such a hard push away , not like gentle Kumbura Khanyisa was only momentarily taken aback and preceded to just sneak around her back and go towards Phabeni. Khanyisa didn’t go near Phabeni until Timsa went and did the back kicks to Phabeni with Khanyisa rushing in close at the end of the kicking. It appears as if Khanyisa may have copied Timsa’s behaviour towards Phabeni.

I remember when Luny and Tokwa raided the wild herd and kidnapped the wild baby elephant Fishan was in on that too. All the elephants knew the wanted another baby to love and care for. Their wishes came true.
