“Nobody tells people who are beginners-and I really wish someone had told this to me... that all of us who do creative work get into it because we have good taste. But for the first couple of years what you’re making isn’t that good.
But your taste is still killer.
And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you’re making is a disappointment to you?
A lot of people don’t get past that phase. A lot of people quit right there…
And the thing I want to say to you with all of my heart is that most everyone I know went through a phase of years when what they were making fell short-it didn’t have this special thing...
Everyone goes through it.
And if you are just getting through it or are going through it right now, you gotta know that it’s totally normal.
The most important thing that you could possibly do is a lot of work-a huge volume of work.
Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or month you know you will finish one story [song].
Because it’s only by actually going through a large volume of work that you will catch up and close that gap-and the work you are making will be as good as your ambitions.
It takes a while. It’s normal to take a while.
You just have to FIGHT YOUR WAY THROUGH THAT.” ~ Ira Glass
