Found a good deal and ended getting one of these. I upgraded the M.2 SSD drive and added a SATA SSD 2TB (for VM's, containers and some small data learning scale sets) and I have to say, I am impressed for this little beast. Please note that my gaming consists of old ROMS running off a SNES/Sega emulator so don't ask about gaming. But I do some image/video editing, streaming items, mainly physics, development (python and .NET core) and some machine learning (light deep learning items). Main OS is linux mint (latest stable version) and some VM's (virtualbox) which consists of Win11, Win2019 Server and MacOS Monterey. Performance is good but I will say to get linux to run as well as Win11 as a VM took a bit of googling and some Linux trickery to get everything to work. I only see load issues when watching a movie while compiling programs while running 2 of the VM's. For the price I paid, I feel it was a good investment. I don't need anything too powerful otherwise I spin it up in the Cloud. I feel it's worth it if you upgrade some of the components. Some caveats are getting Linux to work out of the box on these machines. You have to use, at a minimum, kernel version 5.11 and higher to get some of the internal components to be supported driver wise. Another issue I saw that was not clear cut is that although there is a M.2 NVME SSD slot, there is only 1 as the other slot is a M.2 Sata SSD which has speeds comparable to standard SATA3 SSD 2.5 inch HD's. Shame really as I wanted to get 2 x 2TB M.2 NVME SSD drives. Another caveat that I saw is that it does not support the Gen4 M.2 NVME SSD drives out (which offer more iOPs). So I skipped getting the M.2 Sata SSD and got a 2 TB SATA3 SSD 2.5 inch drive. Since it has a some USB-C connectors I just got a USB-C dongle that adds extra USB-C and USB3 slots so I can add additional components. I also have 2 4k monitors and it seems to be running smooth. I feel it was definitely worth getting and also I have more space around my workstation area. It's pretty silent most of the time so I cannot complain.
@Fredson782 жыл бұрын
So you can use 2.5 SSD instead of HDD, correct?

Sounds great! So, how is it running so far? Any issues or complains?
@MrSteve-hy9yo2 жыл бұрын
@@mohammadnsr2821 No issues so far. My only complaint is that the GPU is not Nvidia meaning I cannot use the TensorFlow stack (Neural Network processing) which seems to favor Nvidia more so than the built-in GPU by AMD. However outside of that, I am able to run containers and VM's on additional SSD drive with no issues. I should be upgrading the RAM to the full 64 GB (max for this little beast) so that I can run more VM's. I would definitely recommend for those who want to do some Dev work or image/video editing (small scale). I will be running some physics software soon so I will more of an idea then after the 64 GB RAM upgrade.

I ran OBS to record some game play of Megaman Maker. Not long videos, maybe 30sec with no issues. No crashes or freezes during the recording or game play. Still trying to make RetroArch and Launch Box play nice with me. OpenEmu has spoiled me. My ONE complaint: my 8bitdo controller never functioned properly. Works great on my Switch and my Mac but on the pc it’s hit/miss. (I’m doing something wrong, I’m sure)I bought an Xbox controller and it runs like a dream. Pcs like this is going to be the future, once Gpu's get so powerfully fast that at lower watts they can run games at maxed settings it will make desktops obsolete for majority of people unfortunately. If they modified this with a pci express slot open at the top somehow or with a adapter so you could use a regular gpu it would be excellent pc. Older Gpus are going obsolete very fast. I got a older r9 390x 8gb that still can play games at maxed settings, but I went to update driver and amd says its legacy and wont make new drivers for it... which is absurd... I can look at benchmark charts and see cards that have more then double performance then this 1 and its crazy how fast technology is blazing along. I haven't upgraded because I can still play games pretty much maxed out... rust / cyberpunk 2077/ fallout etc. I haven't played a game yet I was unable to play.. but with prices and chip shortages idk what to do about upgrading, I actually thought of just using another 390x in crossfire mode or something.

One 2.5 drive wouldn't cut it but since it ends up as sata it could be possible to break out something like an e-sata connector to a sata enclosure and use on-board m.2 for both image storage (works better if it's rather fast) and cache for the "slow" sata ZFS pool. 5900hx might even be a tad overkill unless you need to run a ton of VMs and containers but I'm assuming beelink will make models of these with maybe a 6 core laptop chip instead to save some cash on the pricetag.

wow! my desktop i7 6700k Overclocked to 4.6Ghz on geekbench 5 is getting 1285 Single Core and 5098 Multicore Score vs this 5900HX LAPTOP PROCESSOR APU getting 1524 Single Core and 8443 Multicore.... That's actually amazing, especially when you consider Wattage (Mine probably pulls over 125 watts from the wall overclocked). I CAN"T WAIT for the Ryzen 6000 series APU's with RDNA2. They're gonna be so sick!

As much as i like these mini pcs... igpu is still not powerful enough... when they reach rx580 level of performance these little machines will be amazing.

I mean, by the time they do games will be far harder to run and you would still be limited to playing 10+ year old games so...

I wouldn't wanna use it as a gaming machine like you describe, but as a budget micro server the 32gb model is really all I could ask for.

pretty impressive for such a small package, (that's what she said )

That seems to beat the Minisforum HX90 pretty soundly (by about 15% using the same processor and 3200Mhz memory). But can you boost the video memory at all? It looks like it's using the default 512MB allocation (same as the 5700G). Increasing that to 4GB in the BIOS definitely helps the 5700G (especially with faster RAM), but I don't know if you can increase it on that device.
@robertstan2982 жыл бұрын
I think the iGPU subsystem allocates past what you specify in the BIOS (be it 512MB or 4GB) depending on it's immediate need. Which is good, but setting it too low means you MAY get conflicting memory allocation/errors IF the rest of the system suddenly fills up the system RAM with non VRAM data requests and the VRAM allocation requests hit a wall. This system has 32GB of RAM so I doubt that will ever be a problem tho.
@dividion81022 жыл бұрын
@@robertstan298 Yeah, I've heard it said that it can go beyond that, but if you watch the game videos they all show VRAM usage below 500MB, so it makes me think there's an overhead involved in treating the "overflow memory" like a page file (all in RAM though) and maybe it has to copy the stuff it needs into the 512MB before the iGPU actually uses it. I'm not entirely sure. But if you pre-allocate the space in the BIOS then it shouldn't need to do anything like that. And with 32GB of RAM you could even allocate 8 or 16GB to the iGPU. That'd be kind of crazy. Still, I'm not sure if the GR9 even allows it.

Rumours suggest that this will become moot in the near future as amd has plans to unify the memory rather than splitting it, closer to what consoles do. This could bring a big performance boost, though it will likely not come out until we get the 7000 series mobile chips next year at the earliest.

Nice PC, might as well wait on the 6000 mobile series with RDNA2 graphics, they should start popping up by the end of this month or in March. I cant wait to see the performance of RDNA2 on every desktop CPUs as well.
@bionicgeekgrrl2 жыл бұрын
That is just mobile currently. We'll probably have to wait a while longer for the new desktop apus on am5, probably next year.

wholly poop my dude! $1000! It's super cool how tiny it is but I could easily build two of these in miniATX. Maybe even one of these with a half decent GPU... maybe a 980ti?
