The ishift is tremendous... I've driven a few Volvo trucks and you have full control but the ease of use means you're not as fatigued after a day's work... I'm glad you were impressed too.. (I've been driving trucks for 30 years... starting with crash boxes)

Jack, thanks for this enjoyable video. If you're considering a new Volvo truck just call the Volvo company and request a tour. I work on the frame line at the Dublin, Virginia assembly plant (aka the New River Valley plant) and we have customer tours year round. We know we build the best trucks in the world and we are proud to show our customers what we do here. I can't speak for the salesman you dealt with. It's been my experience that some of them are better than others. Thanks for supporting American workers!

Hi Jack, Got to agree with Adam Robinson Volvos I shift is undoubtedly the finest auto box in the world we use them in Europe on heavy haulage work no problems, it can also be driven as a manual, however its that good you never do. have a great weekend.

I`ve been driving the I-Shift on norwegian roads since 2008 and i love that transmission. People should try it (Loaded) before the talk trash about it. It`s not the same as driving a car with an automatic transmission. I was against the automatics in trucks before i tried it. I still don`t want an automatic transmission in my own car. I drove a 18 speed manual with splits when i started.

indianajacktrucker lol, your talking in the video about autos vs manuals makes me think of your other video mentioning people talking down about using a GPS. Manual transmissions are going the way of the buggy whip just like relying solely on an atlas.

indianajacktrucker Yeah, they're pretty good. I work for a Volvo dealership and the consensus is that no human can match i shift. Plus, with the manual capability, they still provide the control aspect of choosing the gear you want. Did you use all 3 drive modes?
@catfishakaAMC

Kilika 1939 You would use the engine brake. On the automatics, there is a toggle/joystick looking thing on the right side of the steering column. Pull it towards you the first click for 2 cylinders of engine brake, in the middle for 4 cylinders, and all the way for full jake brakes.

Hello IndianaJack...Please clarify whether you drove and AutoShift built by Eaton or an Volvo iShift (only avail behind Volvo engines). The difference is night and day... While they are both still gear boxes (iShift is a 12spd and Eaton is a 10spd)...but that is where the similarities end. Volvo has a Pneumatic clutch which allows you to feather the pedal on startup, and the Control Mod (brain) communicates bilaterally. In fact the the transmission is often telling the end what it needs...Volvo is alone there.Lastly it comes with a standard warranty of 5yrs/750,000 miles...and yes you're right my sister could drive this truck.

Hello NewVolvoTrucks.com typical of todays customer service. you chime into indianajacktrucker's review of your product only to correct him and make sure you are in the spotlight. how about thanking him for being an existing customer of your products? or apologizing for the volvo salesmens lack of time to properly assist a potential customer of your pneumatic clutch volvo iShift transmission. See how i just did that? apology and product placement all in one sentence. Maybe NewVolvoTrucks.com should get there head out of there iAss and contact indianajacktrucker, find out when and where he will be next and nearest to a Volvo dealership, set-up a appointment for a test drive. Maybe send him some free Volvo swag. I'm sure his over 12,000 followers would hear nothing but god feedback. Or like most big companies today you do enough business that good business doesn't really matter.

I have hauled 6 loads a day in a gasoline tanker in the city. We had a 485hp ishift daycab. All I can say is wow. I am sold sold sold... Engine braking, disk brakes, super quiet ride. Smart shifting and 7.4mpg in Phoenix.... What is not to like? Manual mode works fine. After a day you will be like, D for me! I have hauled in cities for 20 years. Sign me up for another Volvo I shift! Go home feeling like another day at the office...

I believe all goes in cycles. The KWs and Pete were tough to beat in late 70s/early 80s. Volvo, Western Star are strong contenders now. lots of room, quiet, quality and getting things to a science(steering,shift, things that wear out quicker etc)sweet!

As someone who was a die hard manual-or-death truck driver for over 4.5 years, I spent about 5 months in a VNL 670 with the D13 (455) and iShift this year and was pretty much a full convert after about 3 months. I went back to a Mack CHU MP8 (505) and 18-speed and wanted my iShift back almost immediately. Shifting a manual is still fun, but it just feels like work now. The Eaton autoshifts are pretty terrible automated transmissions, but Volvo really has the technology set up right with the iShift. The forward visibility of the windshield/dash is unmatched in the industry and the interior appointments are top-notch.

Jack - - In the early 70's, I broke in on a 64 Cab-over Pete, 318, 4 & 4 transmission. Later, I moved to a 76 Pete 359, 350 Cummins, 13 speed, running OTR for a couple of years. Then into late '70's Kenworth, 350, 5 & 4, pulling twin 30 ft belly-dumps, overall length 105 ft, grossing 140,000 lbs, from a quarry to a cement mfg plant. Quarry road was 1 1/2 mi of 6%, and 1/2 mi of 14 %. Would much rather have the 5 & 4, especially in cold weather when moisture in the airtanks freezes and you can't shift from low to high range. I definitely preferred the twin stick, especially on the 14 % grade. Larry Lister

been driving a manual trans for 29 years and a few automatic company loaners between services and still like the manual shifts better, even in city where i currently drive most ,like the control of selecting the gear i need and maintain that gear up and down hill and foot fatigue don't double clutch only use clutch to stop and start after doing that for so long you forget about having to do it and it comes naturally ,slow down in traffic maintain speed judging by vehicles in front of you and leave it in that gear no need to wear your leg out pretty simple, but for less experienced drivers yeah you might want to stick with your automatic thats suits you better.

Hello Indiana Jack: I am from the old school too, started driving in 1987 and learned to drive on a Peterbilt 386 with a 9 speed manual. I progressed to the 13 speed and I love shifting. Maybe I am speaking out of ignorance however I learned to drive a manual and I will die driving a manual. I average almost 8 1/4 miles to the gallon with my Freightliner FLD120 condo with a series 60 detroit.

Another good video, I used to drive a VNL 630 with i-Shift with super singles. I took it up and down Whitebird, Cabbage, the Grapevine, Cajon, I-70, Donners and Parley's, snow, rain, dry, running heavy or light, never had a single issue with the automatic.(I do miss shifting, I will admit, but auto is not as bad as people make it out to be) The only complaint was the sleeper in the 630 was so small. (Made it easy to dock into the tight areas though)

I agree about the salemen being "too busy"... Whenever a potential customer walks in you should never be "too busy" to help them. Because for all you know you could walk away with a sale. Either that or the customer can simply browse your stock, see what they like and purchase what they want from a dealership that has staff that will actually assist them and treat them like they matter. I haven't gotten into trucking yet, as I have yet to get my CDL but I have been thinking about the future. Maybe a little prematurely, but it never hurts to think. And Volvo was one of the main contenders that I was thinking about if I ever wound up going along the lines of Owner/Op. But honestly seeing how Jack was treated by customer service and left to his own devices to get information on the trucks, I don't know. You'd figure that Volvo would spend the time and training to make sure that their staff knows that customers ARE important. I did have it narrowed down between Volvo and Kenworth, but now I'm thinkin my top two are going to have to be Kenworth and Peterbilt. Volvo can hang around somewhere there in the back of the line.

pretty much all trucks are getting into the automatics. Volvo in Europa was sort the pioneers of it though with the "Ishift". Even though the majority of trucks over here are still "manual", only we use synchronized transmissions like with normal non-ancient cars.
@mikeplaysit
@mikeplaysit 9 жыл бұрын
soaringtractor But from what I understand, there is a difference between a standard "automatic tranmission" like the Allison, and an "Automated Manual", which is what the Volvo's and other trucks have.
@mikeplaysit
@mikeplaysit 9 жыл бұрын
soaringtractor Well yeah, when it comes down to it. Especially when considering that it takes less skill to drive either an automatic or an automated manual, being that it does shift automatically. That I agree on. I was just speaking from technical terms on how it operates, as it doesn't operate as an automatic does. It's basically an electronically controlled manual transmission, where solenoids shift the gears for you, apparently. That's what I've heard. But then again I'm no expert by any means. Hell I don't even have my CDL yet, though I am going to get one soon, hopefully get hired on with a decent company. I was debating on whether or not I would want an automatic if I ever became owner/op (those days are a ways away still though). Because I've heard about the fuel economy with them, but at the same time, in any vehicle I really do prefer a manual transmission as it gives you much more personal control over how the vehicle runs. Both in cars, pick ups, motorcycles and whatnot.

Automatic shifting is simply much better and more comfortable than manually. An automation gearbox can also be switched manually at any time. You have in your left hand the steering wheel in his right hand a cold Coca Cola and you have to worry about anything else. Something better does not exist.

+DriveLongRoad automatics are extremely more dangerous for hills hauling 80-k lbs. As the driver does not have full control over his or her truck and have to depend on the truck to do all the shifting in certain predicaments. I am not a fan of automatics, through my many years of experience they break or malfunction way too many times. and again, I have no control of the truck.

My feeling was the same about automatics until I drove one, You can down shift with autosmatics, You just have to select your gear early because the two I drove won't let you shift once you start a down grade. I suppose thats supposed to be a safty feature.However when I did my first decent on The Cabbage, I had to pull over and stop in order to down shift. I won't mention the makes. Because once I figured this out and how to use them both, They both really were a lot more fun to drive.. Especially in major city traffice. Not having to shift in those conditions made that a lot more easy.

Jack I have driven both manual and auto but prefer manual especially 18 speed. The volvo I shift is actually not automatic but like freightliner's ultrashift, is properly known as an automated Manual transmission. They dont have clutch packs etc like an automatic but the body and guts of a regular manual tranny with the shifting done by solenoids. Supposedly best of both worlds. Real automatics like the Allison I have driven and don't like! Well suited for city trucks etc but awful for highway! The I shift however is apparently very good. We have some fleets here in Canada with Volvo integrated powertrains, the I Shift and Volvo D16 engine set up for 2050 ft/lbs torque that happily pull our Super B s grossing 63000 kgs. I recently pulled super b tankers in a Freightliner Coronado with a DD16 and the automated manual Ultrashift 18 speed. Pills fine but still undecided! With the smartshift option it was easy to manually shift. We have an owner operator with two volvos on both with I Shift and he loves it and is pulling super b tankers.

Nice to see that the US is bringing in Euro type specs to trucks. Long overdue. I was a truck driver in UK and Europe for 40 years before I retired. We have had automatic trans for over 10 years , like Jack, I was a little dubious at first, but soon got used to it. The 12 speed is produced by German manufacturer ZF, and is very forgiving. Before any US trucker tells me I don't know what I'm talking about as far as US specs are concerned, I have driven varios American trucks over the years, including Peterbilt, Kenworth, White and GMC, and I found them very untidy compared with the specs of European manufacturers like Volvo, Scania, Mercedes or Renault.

If you get a chance give the auto manual a try - its nothing like driving a car. I would kill to get a nice new VNL780, but it looks like the company I am heading for are running Petes and Freights

I don't think anyone should be allowed to drive a motorized vehicle on the roads without first having learned to drive a stick shift properly. That being said, I'm getting my AZ or Class 1 licence because I found out that most trucks are automatics now. I hurt my right arm and could no longer shift gears for a long period of time so gave up for over 15 years.....and now I will soon be back....I love the "open" road especially with no 2 or 4 wheelers on it...lol

You get more miles per gallon with automatic, but yes I have heard you lose some control. it might downshift where you dont want to, or upshift.. that issue may be resolved. also you can "force it" to stay in gear

i drive a 2016 Volvo I shift with a 425 dump trk,i,ve driven up steep hills for 17 years with 10 spd, you let the truck shift up the hills,on the way down put in manual,drop back handle and use your thumb to down shift. saves the knee!

Great video. I actually just started at a company with nothing but Volvo and I gotta Say I love the auto. Especially in gridlocked traffic . I have one question tho I can't seem to be able to open the luggage compartment from the outside how is that done? I don't like having to pickup the bed to grab my tool bag or other thing I may not want to store with my cloths up in the cab.

manuel cano There should be a cable release right inside the driver door by the back side of the seat. I think it's Volvo that has that.

I know what you mean about a good and a bad salesman. My Dad and I went shopping for a new motorhome north of toronto and my dad was interesting in one of them,so he asked the salesman for the price of that motorhome. the salesman answered my dad :If you ask for the price that mean that you can't effort it.My dad and I looked at each other and just walked out of the dealer's wearhouse. That man put is foot in is mouth,he lost a chance of an easy sale. Bob

Really like the video and pretty sad that they're making nothing but a automatics on semi trucks but that's the industry I have drove in automatic and manual transmission we're driving in traffic automatics are good but if you are working in the farming industry where you need to go into the fields to pick up the loads I rather have a manual transmission you get stuck pretty quick with the automatics on dirt roads and specially if it's raining nice video and so true about dealerships I got into a few and some guys just don't want to put the effort into selling you a truck not all but the majority

Thats a bit of a narrow minded approach to automatics. Europe have been driving auto's for at least 10 years helps the driver to concentrate on the road around him more and i have been driving FH volvo for thar length of period plus some i started my my career on twin splitters on foden that sorted the wheat from the chaff and that was 25 years ago. The only thing ive noticed about the american market is that youre a few years behind the rest of europe when it comes to your dashboard layout. you should see the 2015 volvo FH HERE IN EUROPE YOU'LL SEE WHAT I MEAN.

C'mon Jack, shifting ain't rocket science. Learning to turn without running over crap, backing a trailer into a tight dock, balancing for bridge laws, paying attention to load height and avoiding low bridges etc. all take far more skill than driving a stick. In my class almost to a man the students learned shifting a big rig easily. Backing many NEVER got, before graduating at any rate. If the autos can provide better fuel economy, as they claim, I'm all for them. In my day parking was a problem, but not near as severe as now, based on what you guys are saying. So planning your trips is likely harder than shifting. People with good hearing and able to match RPM to gear selection and road speed have it dicked. Shifting a big rig intimidates many, tll they DO it. And they then learn it's no big deal. I wish we'd had the auto shift when I drove. (I'm lazy)
Finally a COOL VOLVO
