I work for Volvo construction equipment dealer. I see alot of d13j engines in loaders and haul trucks and can honestly say we don't have many issues. Injectors and cups and aftertreatment faults mainly. Good video.

Another thing you may want to mention is the 2 I believe they're called the DEF coolant lines, those plastic L shape peices that the lines connect to, I had to have mine changed, because they broke and when they break you loose all of your coolant fast, I'm not sure if you've mentioned this before on your channel, I just thought I'd throw it in, the service guy that come out and fixed mine said he's fixed several on these volvos, thanks for the helpful information you give out, keep doing whatcha doing

Volvo d13 ishift is a great truck. Used to work for mclane and that’s all they had. Never had issues with one and transmission shifted smooth.

At 500k miles that's not a bad list compared to ISX. Most engines the turbos, injectors, EGR, after treatment, etc will need work or replacement around 400k. So, a $10k preventive investment before 500k sounds reasonable. Repeat before 900k and get the bearings done if you haven't and you'll drive pass 1 million miles without major headaches. O/O use your reset hours wisely on PM.

Surge tank cracks, oil fill tube dry rots and cracks at the oil pan fitting, rear timing gear cover leaks, crankcase vent pump gasket leaks from drying out, DOSING manifold!! Pathetic how many of these I have changed on the older brick types...just to name a few. Ow and another one, I’ve seen a failed CD player, the factory radio, throw a check engine DTC. That’s just the issues I’ve seen on 14-17 models. They do have electrical bugs but they are much better than our 2020 internationals, but not as reliable as our 2016 freightliners. Good video.

The effed up part about the radio, you cant just throw another volvo radio into it, without having the pass code.. Another annoying inconvenience with Volvo is just about every electrical item in it is a module of some kind.. and if you don't Syncronize and register it with central systems at the time of replacement you screw the next guy who has to change any kind of parameter but can't because your locked out of pretty much anything due to Chassis Id mismatch.. I freaking hate Tech tool with a passion..

Of all the new engines out I prefer the d13 and the mp8 which is the same. You hit the nail on the head with this video. I have a truck repair shop in Texas as well and as far as internal faults the cups are defently the weakest link. I would also mention if you hear your power steering pump making a noise don't ignore it. CHANGE IT! It's a tandem pump meaning its also connected to the fuel as one unit. I've seen the pump lock up and sheer of the gears on the gear train. Then its pull the engine time.😳

Mp8 engines are definitely not the best ever made. Lol. Every engine ever made has it's weak points. For example C15 cats are awesome, but the heads crack in between the valves and injector cups fail. Cummins ISX head gaskets fail pretty regular and the front structure is bad about leaking. No one makes a perfect engine.

The AHI module, usually gets clogged up, restricting fuel to the 7th injector nozzle, because the air dryer filter gets clogged, allowing dirt and oil, to contaminate the air systems.

@@almixin Nope. 3 trips to the Volvo dealer and they could not fix it. I was fired from that company 6 months ago after 17 years of service. I now drive a day cab Freightliner with a great working a/c. I'm also making $600 more per week and home everyday. Yes I know it's hard to believe the pay.

I also see a lot of the lower DPF housings cracked at the welds by the DEF doser and also oil pushing through the oil sensors or injector harness and pushing through engine harness.

2017 730 with 620k mikes. Started showing a P228F00 code. Derates. Resets every day until I put a load on it. Runs great for about a mile even with a load.

Did you ever get that fixed? I figured that, if you maintain the turbo psi under 31, the engine will maintain power. If I go over 31 psi for a few seconds, the turbo cuts off and the pressure won't go past 15 psi until you stop, turn off engine to rest the ECM.

7th injector or AHI module, timing gear cover gasket leak, PTO cover o-ring (engine mount) EGR cooler like you said clogged but sometimes coolant leaks internally and cooler has to be replaced, transmission cooler lines short one on the trany, nox and pm sensors but not often, cab heater core can be plugged and no heat in the cab, CAC pipe on hot side those permanent clamps beter cut and install regular ones with screw, DEF pump leak a lot specially in winter and push def thrue the def pump harness all the way to ACM and if this happened chasse harness need to be replaced+ DEF pump, DEF pump harness+ DEF level sender with quality sensor+ coolant solenoid for DEF pump, and don't forget timing plate on the right top corner of the engine, and also newer models with common rail Volvo roll out bulletin for EPRV (electronic pressure relief valve) on the fron end of fuel rail, so ther is a EPRV delete kit that req remove valve and plug the hole+ pressure sensor and right side of injector harness+accessory kit need to be programmed in order to tell ECM that there is no pressure relief valve anymore 😀

Need help So I got my 2016 Volvo fixed at this shop in Philadelphia. I was told I had to clean my DPF, I had to replace the doser (otherwise the truck wouldn’t do a regen), and they also said I had to replace one of the injectors. Not sure which one. And also 2 knock sensors. After all of this, the truck seemed to run okay for few days but then I noticed something odd about the transmission. I never had any issues with my transmission before. The problem is becoming more and more obvious. When cruising on a straight road, it automatically downshifts to lower gear for few seconds, making the engine scream. When pressing the gas, you can feel a bit of a vibration (never had this issue before) and also, when backing up a trailer, it starts reversing with R1 which makes the truck jerk and shake crazy so I have to manually upshift the gear to r2. I called the shop and they can’t give me any tip other than calling me back to the shop. Can you guys help me out figuring out what might be the issue? Thank you

Not sure about that. I work for a fleet that does regular maintenance and pm on ours. I've replaced countless cups and injectors. Mainly around 4-500k miles but have done several at 200k miles. We're setup with mack to do warranty repairs so that's why we didnt send them to the dealer.

@@navaro20 usually the first sign of a plugged dpf/burned out dpf is going to be excessive amounts of parked re-gens, or a "level 3" plugged code, different manufactures call it different things, but if you notice the truck is trying to run a passive regen constantly, its time to take it off and have a look. but if its functioning normally its probably not worth messing with. as the wiring/connectors/mount hardware/clamps/gaskets can be a massive pain to dissemble

2016 volvo with d13 475k miles. Driving max loaded 80k lbs, all day, hot weather, 75mph at around 1am I-4 west just before Orlando, FL violent shaking apears. Cruise desingaged shaking disapears, accelerator pressed shaking reapears. Pressing gas pedal 10-20% got to restarea dropping speed to around 50mph. Sat at rest area for 20-30 min checked driveshaft air bag level engine or transmission leaks. Found nothing unusual. Kept driving 80 more miles to delivery on low throttle 10-20% good thing Florida is flat. Than drove home empty next day 585miles. No problem. What was that? Any suggestions?

I currently don't have any codes because I always address them as soon as they apear. But I have long cranking starts from time to time and some bubbles coming from return line inside the fuel tank. So my Injectors are going. Purchased set of new injectors arriving next monday. Already have injector cups and install-removal tool for them. Got it while ago, cuz knew this engine have problems with them. Not sure if I should install all new injectors or just replace bad ones, or replace cups only and use all old injectors. Truck is idling and driving nice and smoth so they are working fine just the leaky kups. I thought about filters but last two times when my filters got clogged, engine just stopped within 5-10 minutes from start acting. I dont have big glass filter on passenger side just original volvo filters and you know how small is original water separator. I always cary spare ones with me. Maybe this situation was caused by filters. Just got smaller junk inside the fuel which clogs them very gradualy. Thanks for advise tho. What will you say about injectors. This truck never had them done, i got it since new. 475k mi now.

I would replace the DPF's with new or cleaned ones.. All the coolant leaking into the exhaust stream ends up in the DPF at some point, which only clogs them up. It would be recommended to do the filters when changing the EGR cooler..

on mine, the idle gear that turns the power steer/fuel pump, went bad, ate up all the gearing back there! crankcase vent motor seal. and the exhaust thin round gaskets after the turbo. just leaked fluid/smoke during regen.

22 860. 100k miles. starts no problem, idles perfect. revs fine in neutral. put it in gear it goes to 3 or 4mph and it stops pulling. will not hold a steady 3 or 4. goes back to 0 and then will move again up to those speeds.

I have a d16 sometimes when I go up or down a mountain my oil light comes on the oil is full and I've replaced the sensor in the pan twice and the temp sensor and it still cuts off but cranks right up and go sometimes the def light comes on but goes right off I replaced the filter 6 months ago it was 2700 plus labor I don't know what else it could be

Hi, great video. I have a 2010 Volvo with a D13. I was driving down the road and my coolant alarm went off. Pulled over and found a mix of coolant and diesel in my coolant tank. Took to the shop and they tell me that it was the injector cups that failed. I had them replace them with a “New & Improved” version. Cups and injectors. The mechanic called with another issue, he found coolant in my fuel tanks. Is that normal thing when the cups fail? Thank you in advance

El Che, cross contamination can occur when there is injector cup failure. There is no fuel cooler so the injector cups are the only area where coolant and fuel can mix.

2016 volvo d13, just put new batteries in thinking that was the starting issue, but it still is almost like almost dead batteries, turn the key and it acts like its trying then doesnt, then after about 4 turns of the key, it turns right over. I'm thinking starter is going bad, but I dont know where it is on the d13. can you do a video or pictures zoomed out and then somewhat in close so that I can see its location? Thanks in advance

How about an intermittent light issue, all lights work on truck, but there is no power to the trailer plug and trailer fuses under hood are all good(Replaced for brand new just in case). Have double checked and not getting power to Fuse block. But it only happens occasionally.

Check transmission harness over transmission. Also check white connector begins seat that comes from your gear selector shifter. The pins in that white connector always has corrosion.

I had same problem with my truck. Dash would show it was on but when I let off to engage nothing happened. Are you having cruise control issues also? After weeks of searching turned out to be an $8 clutch pedal spring that did not let clutch activate clutch safety switch properly thus preventing Jake from activating. I'd check that and see. Hope this helps.

Just bought a 2012 with a D13 motor. After it 's ran a few minunntes, I can hear fuel draining back into the passenger side tank. After that, it's hard to crank unless you manually prime it. Before the fuel drainback is heard, it cranks fine. Changed both fuel filters already and no leaks or changes in the problem. Any help with check valves to look at and where they are lcated would be really appreciated.

I have a 2012 Volvo temperature goes up from 180 to 225 and back down not sure if it's the radiator I change the thermostat already could injector cups cause this problem

Covered all the normal issues we see on our fleet! However we’ve got a new one that’s stumping us. Been having a lot of 17-19 VNR’s with the D13 coming in with fuel system faults and when following the troubleshooting in Volvo tech tool it leads us to the #2 pumping injector. Test comes up and shows the #2 data “not reliable” but #4 and #6 pumping injectors all test fine. So we’ve been replacing the #2 injector and cup, high pressure relief valve, rail pressure sensor, and running the overhead on them. And the last few that’s came through have came back with the same fault, and the test comes back saying the same thing, #2 data not reliable. Any idea??

I’m not a mechanic at all, but it sounds like injector might be loosing connection or power.

I thought the same thing, however it’s giving a mechanical system fault, not electrical system. The fault code it’s giving is-P025700: Injection pump fuel metering control “B” Range/Performance (cam/rotor/injector). As I stated, the injector, cup, and rocker adjuster were all installed new, the overhead was set to Volvo’s specs, all torque specs to Volvo’s spec, new injector trim code was programmed to ecm, and we also replaced the fuel rail relief valve and rail pressure sensor on the last one. It’s still coming up with the same issue, comes back from a run showing a CEL, with the fault listed above and shows the fault I listed above. This makes the 6th truck we’ve had in our fleet with this issue, all with less than 500k miles on the engine. Surely they aren’t all electrical issues but I may be wrong.

I have just replaced a head,but now low power,could I be i tooth off on timing gear,if it was will it be like turbo not doing right? It was hard to tell the mark on the crank in the hole if it is one tooth off before I get a turbo. thanks

If issues happened after repair, then the problem could be with the repair. Why was head replaced?

@@TATEXPRESSINC head had valve damage and cause crack liner .It was hard to find exact flywheel tdc cam was not perfectly in center of the tdc mark but I thought 1 tooth might push it the other way off. I think if not perfectly aligned it will code 21 and possible affect turbo boost when going down the road .sounds good in shop but active engine position data erratic. Code not sure if it had that code before New sensor no change.

Say for instance if I do have an injector cup issue, will I have to replace the injectors as well or will it be just the injector cup?...

Jimmy Love, as long as the sealing surfaces of the injector are good the injector can be reused with new cups. Make sure you use an experienced shop, I have had to repair major failures due to someone installing incorrectly and causing major engine damage. Thanks for watching and thank you for the support. I'm looking at getting a 2011 780 & the guy got it in 2018, removed the one axle, had new driveshaft made and computer flashed so it won't look for it. Not sure if it was programmed as an rv since it has a auto h he built the deck on it. I know it has a diesel particulate filter on it and 1.1 million miles. He says it runs great and only gets 1 or 2 k miles a year on it. I've asked him to get fluids tested & asking about all the stuff you mentioned here. Guess is would this be a good reliable truck for a few more years & being driven mostly a few times a month and using as an rv since it has an apu? Parts & service are my biggest concern for here in Southwest Arizona because dealers are 2.5 hours east or west & parts availability with prices. Thanks for the great information on the D13 Brad

Check engine light stays on. It may go out but most of the time it's on. I asked a Volvo mechanic about it and was told there are ghost in the machine because of so many computers they can't chase down every issue. That made me all warm and fuzzy.

Those you barely see in the shop or know have been great year engines. I have a couple of 14s and they have been great. Want to expand my fleet and have heard mixed feedback about newer models, starting with the 2016s and up. Thanks in advance

Just my 2 cents in . Best d13 is from 7-14 . 2014 is actually a 2013 year truck was manufactured. D13 from 15 and up are 💩💩💩. Burn oil and prob with head gasket

I've got a 2020 D13 with 250,000 miles. What would cause a oil leak on it. There was a bolt that was loose on valve cover but new gasket and bolt replaced. Seems to be near rear of motor..don't think it's residual .

Clean the area of concern and verify the source. The D13 has a rear timing cover that is a common oil leak.

My husband drives a Volvo and he has been having trouble with when he goes up hill around 68 to 70 mph the rpm’s starts jumping and it kinda acts like it’s not getting enough fuel or something they’ve already changed turbo sensors and a lot of other stuff but still does same mechanic says computer doesn’t say that there is anything wrong with injectors so not sure what is wrong do you have any suggestions

I recommend troubleshooting the fuel system by replacing the fuel filters, and if the problem persists, then an air-in-fuel test should be conducted.

I have d13 and I had the egr system replaced the cooler,tub,valve,temp sensor and the dpf doser that got replaced and I'm in 2020 760 all these have been replaced at 70 to 80 thousand miles so what else would go bad and the company I'm with I have to idle which I don't like to do so should I buy myself a Apu to stop idling

I have seen some of your educational videos; you rock buddy!!! Question: I swap my automatic transmission type D for type F with my ECU and Shifting gear. Now when it shifts, 3, 5, 7, 9 it fells like its punching on engagement. also it is engaging to 5 gear way on low RPM from 1300 to 500rpm almost kills the engine. any comments?

I've been losing about 12 gals of oil every three days on my D13. It's not coming out of the stack as the engine runs at idle nor being driven on the road. In addition it's not leaking on the ground...until it sits at idle after being driven for an extend period of time. Or, if you start it and let it sit at high idle(9,000rpm) for about 5 minutes, it will start spewing oil out of the blow-by tube. So could you please give me some insight as to what repairs may be needed? Thank you.

What about the fuel gauge sensor? I’ve driven a couple of these and would fill these things up with diesel and the gauge would still read a quarter of a tank. Which is a bit frustrating.

I have a question for you I change the fuel pump. I change the accessory drive. I changed the fuel pump housing. I’ve change the check valve, i’ change the clutch i change all the filters air & Fuel and my truck still jerks going uphill only on the uphill I feel like I’m going on a pothole it’s something has to do with the fuel what do you think it is? 2007 volvo vnl D12 engine has no code. Nothing on the computer fuel pressure is normal when they put the fuel pressure or pressure test.

When I Start my truck. Hill assist light blink for few seconds . Also abs and tcs light comes on stay steady for few seconds then goes away. During driving time , it comes once a week stay for few seconds and goes away . Truck driven ok . What might be the cause for those lights to show up

In the injector seal kit there's the thick purple one at the top and there's a thinner purple one use it on the bottom ring of the injector and that fixes your hard start problems a lot of D13 things I've noticed have a bleed down issue with their injectors and they get air in the system you can change the check valves you can change everything on there and still have a hard start a lot of them can be fixed by running a double seal I need injector itself not always but most of the time that'll fix your problem

Crappy sensors. Sounds about right. Worked for a company that ran nothing but Volvos with D13s. They'd sell them as soon as the warranty went out at 450k. Guess that worked for them. I do like that smooth Volvo suspension though.

I have a 2013 Volvo. It has a request parked regen, on the screen. I have done a regen about 6 times, and for as long as 3 hours, but it won’t complete the regen. Had the filter clean, and tried again. The temperature has reached as high as 820 degrees, but settles back around 740 degrees.

Not getting hot enough. You’re temps should be 950+ degrees Fahrenheit. Possible clogged 7th injector.

2016 Volvo D13 Over 630k miles The “red stop” keeps popping up on the dash and coolant spraying everywhere and completely lost all the coolant. 3 times I’ve had something done with the coolant lines in the past three months. I just had it repaired three weeks ago and here comes the light again. What gives?

I work with volvo trucks.recent issue with my volvo truck is it has poor pick as per driver.as before changing the camshaft and rockers the vehicle was moving uphill at 5 and half gear. But after replacement it has been down to 4 and half. No active or inactive DTC. New fuel filter and water separator.new boost pressure sensor but the condition remains the same. Is there a real concern with the vehicle???

Hello, I have a Volvo 2013 D 13 engine just change the head and turbo. Everything is fine on the truck runs great now but one issue that I can’t figure out whenever I turn the truck on the truck is cooled as soon as it gets too 120° with the cruise control on, it starts to fluctuate until it gets up to 155 to 160 the fluctuation goes away. Can you help?

Hey Adam, have a D13 VN, and during a forced regen the exhaust temps reach anywhere from 950 to just over 1000 degrees, then it stops and temps come down to around 450 then goes back to regen. Also it seems there is a lot of fuel coming at the connection at the bellows. Have any idea? No codes are coming up. Thanks

I am currently having an issue with my D13 it started producing a lot of smoke no loss of power that I can feel I had a shop supposedly diagnose it they claim problem with the number 5 cylinder and gave me an estimate for an overhaul I have 528,200 miles can you please tell me what to look for oil level is fine doesn’t smell like diesel and no visible signs of coolant in the system
