Awesome video, I've played with aquaponics about 10yrs ago and had great results back when I lived in Hawaii, but it was a very high maintenance system but non the less I was very proud of what I created! Now I live in Nevada. Unfortunately it would cost too much to heat the water in winter and chill the water in summer. so now I grow in my garage with a small DIY hydro system. I always a place in my heart for Aquaponics Aloha Dean

They should try Mississippi grass shrimp, they’re native to Ohio. If they can get the nauplii to live they will have a great trophic level benefit there. I do this with other animals and I’m trying to get those shrimp to work for me but I can’t get them past nauplii. There is a study “biological means of increasing productivity of ponds” very old, but the last chart on the report is fantastic. They did trophic level studies, very useful for bass pond and is applicable to this. Use complex structure, simple structure (jargon) for breeding and living space, and then as a hunting tool for higher trophic levels, respectively.

This innovative approach to aquaculture is truly impressive! It's exciting to see how new methods are making seafood production more sustainable and efficient while protecting marine ecosystems.

have you tried using invasive carp as a potential protein input/wild fish replacement for salmon/trout?

Great video-lots of valuable information! We're currently upgrading our aquaponics program, and I have one question: Do you have a solids lifting system in the fish tank to transfer solids to the crayfish, or are the crayfish placed directly in the fish tank? Hello, Nice video, do you think this kind of close system can work in cold weather like Washington state? How about cost of energy? Do you need to warm the water during winter? It’s is posible to visit your project?

So what did we learn that wasn't already learned in the study conducted by the University of the Virginia Islands in the 80s? Is there a link to the actual data?

I was wondering this myself. The only real step up seems to be the removal of the solids waste / nitrification trap in the UVI design, with the root mass working as it's stunt-double. I'm not sure how this will play out once there is a harvest of the plants or the fish. I'd like to see the report, for sure. I'm running a backyard system and it would be interesting to be able to compare numbers even at poor resolution.

@MichelVaillancourt for home I recommend a bio bead filter unless you are retired and have lots of time to dedicate to re adjusting the water.

Now where are you getting fish feed from? Is that a safe sustainable source? How much does the feed cost? Will the system collapse if prices for the products and imputs fluctuate more than 5%?

Great to see this. But the method is not new? As it has been implemented for decades in some countries

Love how I’m the 666th to like the video haha I absolutely love this idea! I was a big time aquarist for many years and I love how it can be used to actually feed people and at the same time preserve our natural ecosystems. I will definitely be incorporating this system into my future farm enterprise
