Poor baby girl, just beginning to experience life and the joys it has to offer, and as it happens all too much, some fool thought his hurt feelings (that would've faded away shortly) were more important than Tong being able to live out the rest of her life. No second thoughts, only one price for her to pay for wanting to break it off with him. It's unbelievable how that is all too often the solution for so many, for something as petty as a break up, it's heartbreaking.

Some people were raised to believe they deserve everything. Men especially, are fed since young that romance, sex and women are prizes to be won in life. Male protagonists in movies and stories always end up with the girl. When faced with real life rejection and realizing he is not the main character and she has the freedom to walk away, some guys snap. Additionally, a ton of misogyny exists in traditional Chinese culture. I'm Chinese myself and grew up being repeatedly told my brother is the valued child and "daughters are like spilt water". Basically there's an underlying engrained idea that women are worth less. When you combine deeply steeped cultural misogyny, bad emotional control and a lifetime main character syndrome, this is what you get

This is another story that serves as a warning about red flags and stubbornness. I'm not even halfway through the story of what happened and already you've mentioned that her parents didn't think her dating him was a good idea her friends her roommates and yet she replied to all of their concerns with don't worry it's not serious. The sad part is a lot of times these men and women don't realize how serious the situation they're in is until it's fatal. I heard like 15 red flags about this guy just in your description of him, urge all young men and women to please be more mindful of your friends and family and the people that truly love you giving you warnings about your partner. At the very least consider what they're saying carefully before making decisions like going on trips with people alone. My condolences go out to her family and my prayers that her soul may fly with the angels

I lived in Dalian from 2010-2012 and taught at Dalian Yuming Senior High School (known as Number 24 school, locally) for a year. I don't remember coming across Tong in my classes, but I must have at least crossed paths with her in the halls. Zhongshan is such a lovely area and I've never felt safer living anywhere in the world than I did in Dalian. This is such a tragic case, well all are, but when such a bright young life is so brutally taken, and it could be somebody who had said hello to me in a corridor, it hits a little bit harder. I will also elaborate, the test she would have needed to take was the IELTS. It's a real shame at #24 they didn't allow those of us who were qualified teachers and examiners for IELTS/ESOL to teach that in our classes, rather than their standard curriculum (unfortunately, the majority of native "teachers" in China are just native speakers who don't have a clue what they're doing, so I do understand the school's reticence in that regard). Had we been allowed to prepare students for these important exams, it's likely Tong would never have met Lee in the first place. Instead, students must go to often irreputable for profit only "academies" to learn and their safety is way down the list of priority after their fees and scores. I only spent 3 years in China and I loved the people, but its education system is incredibly harsh. I still teach some students online, but I'm happy to be back teaching in Europe where I can combine these important exams with class syllabus and be sure my students don't have to go anywhere shady to get the qualifications they need.

Not blaming the victim. This is just a bit of advice for others. Talk with your partner and make it clear whether you are in a relationship and what that means for both parties THEN you need to enforce those boundaries. Never let someone into your home that you wouldn't mind staying with you for a year. Once someone steps into your home, it can be impossible to get them out as well as being dangerous for you and those who live with you. Also if someone makes you uncomfortable do NOT go anywhere alone with them especially not on a trip.

I sincerely hope Li stays in prison for the rest of his life. He should not be allowed to be released after a mere 13 years after he killed Tong. Her life is over, so why should he be allowed to live the rest of his life being able to see his friends and family when Tong and her friends and family don't get that choice. This was premeditated murder.

Awful what happened to this poor, bright, young lady; and how heartbreaking for her parents. Still watching but the thought crossed my mind... I wonder if the people who stayed in that same hotel room after her death actually ever ended up finding out about it, or the woman who worked at TJ Maxx and rang him up on the suitcase purchase. It would creep me out to have found that out after the fact, but of course they would have had no idea at the time. Anyhow, thanks for the upload & hope you two are doing well. Will be chiming in again after I learn of this coward's sentence, I'm sure.

i was thinking she told him on the trip that their friendship was over and he freaked out and killed her. so crazy to find out about the merged call and that that was what set the plan in motion. he may have still flipped out and killed her when she ended it anyway, but its so crazy to think how preplanned this was and why. chilling

The fact that he said she attacked him so he had to defend himself. This was clearly pre-meditated with the way he chose the suitcase and randomly bought dumbbells… Coming from a Chinese background, I can totally understand why she would insist it was nothing serious. A lot of parents believe a relationship would greatly affect education so we tell them this to placate them. It’s sad but the amount of pride that some Asian communities carry does greatly affect their children.

Agreed. I'm Asian also, and my father gave me the ultimatum to stay away from girls until I finished all of my college, both undergrad and graduate school. The Italian girl who lived in the room across from me liked Asian guys and hugged and kissed me in front of my father and that's what brought on the ultimatum.

What a wonderful work on behalf of the team and all who helped with bringing justice to Shao and her parents! While it's obvious that nothing will bring her back, but it's through the great effort and hard work from those who cared about Shao that the culprit is paying for what he had done! It's a wonderful thing that the bad guy is caught and now serving time!! May Shao's soul RIP, and her parents be comforted, and eventually heal from such terrible and undeserving loss! No one deserves it! 😢❤️

Glad to hear he got life, and hopefully he never gets out. I don't know how a life sentence can possibly be whittled down to a mere 13 years. Also hope her parents ended up getting their daughter's ashes. I can't imagine they wouldn't be able to ship those. Actually, just looked it up, and the post office could in fact do that. I watch true crime documentaries all the time, but this one really choked me up 😢 I am amazed that Chinese officials picked up where US officials left off, and prosecuted Li. We don’t know if she herself told him her intentions before he killed her. He found out from eavesdropping on a call she took while she was on the phone with him-sadly she forgot he was on the line and spilled her plans to him unknowingly.

People are the same everywhere. Chinese students come here and are welcomed. The authorities agreed to work together to see justice. It's politicians who drive wedges between countries. We empathize with her parents because we feel their pain, because we are all simply human beings. This is a very sad story but it offers a great deal of meaning and was very worth being told. Tong has left her positive mark on the world.

Hey, just came across your channel for the first time. As a true crime enthusiast (which I mostly watch to understand people in my life), I am so glad that your thumbnail and subject focuses on the Victim. Most do focus on the perpetrators, giving them auidence despite their henious acts. This story is disheartening, just like many more. Nonetheless, let's keep watch, don't ignore the red flags, know the people you hang around with. These are not perfect proff measures but atlest, you get to protect yourself where you can. So sad that is the society we live in Today.
