Many thanks for the clear contribution about asbesto! Unfortunately in many countries, there is still a lack of information about the many possible uses of asbestos and about which work can be carried out by the customer and with which safety precautions. If you suspect asbestos, it is better to be safe than sorry: a small material sample, which you can easily take yourself, can be used in a professional test procedure to determine whether building materials containing asbestos have been used in your property. If this analysis confirms the suspicion of asbestos, then the following applies: Have any kind of gutting and renovation work carried out exclusively by service providers with the necessary certificate of expertise. Only then can you be sure that no accidental contamination of living spaces, clothing, etc. with asbestos fibers has taken place. Stay healthy!

You don't have to. Unless it's coming apart, it's safe. Have a good deal of asbestos flooring. 47 years. Still alive. Lol. This stuff is toxic, but it DOES NOT wear out. We have Armstrong 1964 sheet flooring, called Montina pattern. The backing is 70% asbestos, as is the black, sticky adhesive tar called Black Jack. But I assure you, it's not coming up! Lol. It's ON there. God knows I tried. Ha

Do research. Flikr has good photos that are very clean of "new old" stock. That means it's new in some warehouse. Asbestos research will tell you Armstrong never put asbestos in ceiling tile. Supposedly. You'll know the older it is, the higher the odds are of lead, aasbestos, you name it. Just don't eat paint chips or sand it and you'll live. Anything before 1978 in US is assumed to have lead paint. Extremely dangerous to kids who eat paint chips. Adults over 25, not so much. Asbestos is in things you wouldn't expect, like pipe insulation (looks like white paper) and many bad things in old toys like Pyrex and Corning ware and Fisher price toys. Lead, cadmium, arsenic. They have home test kits for 10 bucks. Not extremely accurate, but a good basic idea. You snap it until you get liquid, rub it over the item and if you see pink you have lead (think mom's wedding china) and red is LOTS of lead. 10 is 2 lead kits Research on asbestos will show you stuff like patterns that CANNOT be anything else. The Armstrong Montina is an OBVIOUSLY unique pattern. Throw a rug over the worn/broken parts, don't mess with it and move on. It's fine. Working with it, removing it. Or destroying it/making it is a WHOLE other animal, tho. That's how most people get mesothelioma.

Removing it is EXTREMELY expensive and not stupid-proof. If you're young, you'll find a lot of workers and other people take ZERO precautions. Most of those workers are young men. It's like trying to be tough. Which is just stupid.

Some forms of asbestos in construction materials are easily visible to the naked eye. But some forms are totally crushed into microscopic particles that are added to certain types of materials like cement mortars, plaster, spackle, tile grout, bonding putties and floor glues etc. Same with some older gypsum drywall boards. These types cannot be detected by anything other than an electron microscope. (No ordinary light microscope will do). They are ground so microscopically into a 'light as air' powder and added to these materials as bonding agents. And the only ones who are qualified to determine if asbestos is present (and what type) are specifically trained lab techs. Us ordinary folk wouldn't be able to determine the difference between asbestos and other rock mineral silicates even if we had our own electron microscope.

Mikebennett146 gave a very informative reply and he is right, sometimes it is impossible to tell by looking if something has asbestos in as it has been mixed into other stuff. For example, Artex ceilings often have asbestos in them, but you wouldn't know for sure unless you got the material tested. In these cases, it is safer to assume it does and to try not to damage or disturb it to avoid creating dust.

Removal by unlicensed personnel is illegal in a lot of countries, one might speculate it is to profit contractors, but it does require some special knowhow to remove it. Except when you can get it off without breaking it.

@@juliuseskola1281 If you're a homeowner you just get a slap on the wrist. It's contractors who aren't license to do it that get fined. If you spend an hour researching how to do and buy all the right protective equipment, it it's not a big deal. Wetting and HEPA are key as well to protect neighbors
