Not necessarily. Asbestos was banned here in 1979 but any flooring that was sold in the '80s could have contained asbestos as inventory in flooring companies wasn't required to be destroyed. Testing of materials in that time period is always best.

Im a residential service plumber and i regularly have to cut into walls and pipes in my line of work and this is a concern for me. I wear a p100 hepa filter , which sometimes doesnt create an airtight vaccum seal on the negative pressure test (small amount of air leaking through the upper nose area) will wearing it still provide protection from those airborn fibers? And what steps can i do to protect myself? Its a concern i have and it bothers me a LOT.

Regarding plaster - isn’t there a timeframe where the plaster was more likely to contain asbestos? I’ve read that prior to the 1920s plaster used horse hair before switching to asbestos fibers. Thanks!
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 ай бұрын
Horse hair is found in the tan plaster material where asbestos fibers are rarely found. Asbestos fibers are normally found in the skim coat that covers the tan plaster and was used from the 1930s up until drywall replaced plaster. Asbestos fibers were used in drywall joint compound up until it was banned in around 1979.

What areas do you consider the greatest risk of actual exposure? I understand from a practical standpoint your exposure is usually pretty low on most items as long as it's not disturbed. But for example, it seems the old tar shingle (under a new roof) example you used in the video would give you very little exposure potential in most cases. So the main worry to me on that is just the cost exposure for abatement if you had to do a complete roof replacement. Is my thought process correct on this? If my thinking is correct, what is the area you would me most concerned for exposure? I would think the ceiling and sheet rock would give me some exposure if you Install pictures, patch walls, etc. I realize this may be a simple question to you. But I am trying to educate myself more as we are looking at some older houses that definitely have asbestos containing material inside. And I want to limit our exposure as much as possible, but also don’t think complete abatement is practical in a old house. Appreciate your consideration of this question. Your video was very informative!
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. The most concerning area in my opinion would be vermiculite in the attic as it takes very little disturbance to release fibers into the air. Plaster and drywall compound can be disturbed when screwing or nailing into and is much more of a concern when pulling the nail or screw out, in this case I would recommend spraying the area with an amended water (soap and water) mixture if you expect to create any dust. Roof Underlayment that I have found to contain asbestos have been under cedar shakes but be aware that older shingles pre 1990 can contain asbestos. Most roofs now days have shingles that are less than 30 years old but keep in mind that in some instances, newer shingles have been installed over older ones. There are two states that asbestos materials can be in, friable and non-friable. Friable materials are more of a concern as they can break up more easily and release fibers into the air, that is why additional containment, negative air and post clearance testing is required for the disturbance of friable materials. I hope this answers your questions.

The owner of my Frankenstein victorian rental space recently had a plumber totally demo a hole in 3 layers of ceiling to get at the upstairs tub (with out notice or testing & he was a butcher abt it even tho I told him 3x there might be aspestos). they didn’t clean up so I did. In the process, in the space between the original ceiling (1850s general store) and upstairs bathroom, where old and 90s plumbing was, theres a ton of concrete like dust & chips. I canNOT figure out where it might have come from or what it was. Theres residue of it in side the wall underneath as well. It is all under the upstairs bathroom that’s ancient, near the cast iron sewage pipe (which had a whitish section but nothing on it). The boiler pipes in the basement have the sheet insulation on them that 100% looks like asbestos and a sort of concrete around the bends. It looks very similar (I think) but there aren’t any boiler pipes in that area. This is a ceiling-floor gap that is ancient. It could be from 1850/60s or it could be from the plumber’s mess somehow a month ago. I know the building was covered in asbestos siding bef current owner, & there was vermiculite insulation falling out of the steam pipe hole to upstairs into my coffee cup etc on my desk. (I asked so many people, spec if it was dangerous & could have aspestos) & the handy man told me it was harmless!) I don’t have a lot of faith at this point they will take this seriously. Is there anything you know of that that residue above the ceiling could be? I can’t even figure out how it got in there with nothing around visible, short of being something from the underside of a tub preexisting. They thought the bathroom hadnt plumbing/placement was original until they found some pvc there too. Obviously I’m trying to get them to access this professionally but you didn’t mention anything abt concrete coating etc in your vid & wondering if there’s anything obvious it could be that I could point to to get a fire lit under my LLs butt despite them avoiding costs. I was exposed to it and the residue is still on my rug and stuff, so I’m not sure how panicked & angry to be (there’s still vermiculite IN my heat duct from before that has had air blowing through it all winter). Any info abt the ceiling stuff to help arm myself to get this taken seriously would be immensely appreciated! I haven’t found an explanation yet for what it could be, even outside of asbestos. This is an area that’s structurally all wood beams, flooring, & ceiling panels from 1799-1920s I think the latest, but it’s been frankensteined over 200 years. Thank you!

It's hard to say exactly what it might be. It could be borax or sodium carbonate used to deter rodents from getting into the house. Cement or levelling compound can contain asbestos fibres. The question you need to ask is when could this material have been installed? If the answer is between 1930s and 1990 or if you are unsure as to when it was installed then it should be treated as a specialist suspect material and tested. You may want to take a sample in and have it tested for asbestos. I hope this helps, thanks for watching.

It was only used in some buildings and material. It may not be in all materials but it's very likely that it is in some materials in older houses prior to 1980. Houses built between 1980 and 1990 have more of a concern with manufactured products like vinyl sheet flooring as suppliers sold their older inventory.

Creating dust in suspect asbestos material such as plaster is the concern. I would recommend that you use a HEPA vacuum if available or spray the area with a mist of water to eliminate any dust. Instead of nails, you might want to look into using "Sticky" hooks.

Hi JohnnyDom, Unfortunately there is still a lack of education about the many possible uses of asbestos all around the world. Whether in floors, screeds and leveling compounds, electrical installations, in tile adhesives and joint compounds, the mastic of windows and doors, as well as in many other materials in and around the house - there are countless possible areas of application of asbestos. Particularly in the case of renovation and refurbishment work, the following therefore applies: Exercise the greatest caution and play it safe! Even a small material sample is sufficient to determine in a professional test procedure whether a suspicious material contains asbestos. If the commissioned analysis confirms the suspicion of asbestos, have any work on it carried out exclusively by service providers with the necessary certificate of competence. This is the only way you can be sure that there will be no accidental contamination of your living space or clothing with asbestos fibers. If you want to know more about possible locations of asbestos in your home, feel free to visit our interactive asbestos house: www.crb-gmbh.com/en/interactive-graphic Stay healthy!
