Chinese calligraphy or 书法 is a traditional art, still widely revered in Chinese culture. Singaporean calligrapher Alex Liew introduces to us the basics of Chinese Calligraphy, from the brushes, to the brush strokes.

There are actually five main types of calligraphic script: standard, running, cursive, clerical and seal. Seal and clerical are better for beginners as the techniques are less complicated. The characters here are haphazardly written without any attention to brush technique. This really can't even be considered calligraphy. Better to just call it writing with a brush (as no technique or method for manipulating the thickness of strokes is required). What's even worse is that his running script character for 年 nian (year) is written incorrectly. The center horizontal stroke should proceed from or near the top, not the middle, of the character. The lines in the middle section are also clustered too closely together. Also, 書 shu doesn't mean book in this context. It means writing. 法 fa means method or standard. This person doesn't really know much about the art I'm afraid.

in Standard mandarin that is correct. most of the southern Chinese accents leave out the "h" and "r" sounds though

@@zach_factor1683 For the accent it is sh->s, zh-> z, ch -> c, r --> l. They do the same thing in sichuan as well. Specifically by southern I think you mean taiwanese.
