"I'm not a teacher..." That is the best teacher for me! I learned a lot of this video, e.g. about the Chi... great difference in sound.

Thank you very much, this video was very helpful! So many helpful tips just in this video alone that my first teacher never told me! I’d just started taking an interest in erhu before COVID, and am now looking into actually learning to play it. Such a beautiful, expressive sound - and I love that you talk about the importance of Qi in getting the best from the connection of instrument and player!

So greateful for your video! I just picked up the Erhu a few hours ago and watched this and a past video to find out the grips, techniques and getting those strong notes to sound out without wavering (it will be quite a while to get that mellow and sophisticated sound). The way you explain makes sense and I was able to overcome issues faster. Never thought about using Chi, however I kind of get it (piano and guitar player). You're a big encouragement and really make the Erhu sing so beautifully, thank you!

Wow I completely agree with you!!! The music has to come from your core. This is the same thing for singing. Thank you!

Excellent video!! Thank you!! I have watched a lot of erhu videos and very few of them get into the tiny nuances that you demonstrate in this one video. I do wish that I could see your right hand the entire time when you play to see any changes your fingers make with bow holding as you switch from inner string to outer string. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Thanks, Micheal! There are many erhu fans who want to learn the erhu by themself, but sometimes it's hard to resolve some basic problems. I do teach students online, but it's really different as face to face teaching. I use to do it after lessons and send them additional private videos to show them the demo and skill details.

It depends on your budget, at meanwhile prices are not the measure, if you want to have the instrument for long time, you should have high quality one. if you only for studying a different culture, you could buy a low budget one.

Thank you very much for all your very instructives videos. I would like to learn erhu, but I have an injury on the index finger of my left hand, and I can't use this finger to play. My question is: Is it possible to learn to play erhu only with 3 fingers instead of 4 in the left hand? Do you know any erhu players who play only with 3 fingers instead of 4? Is it possible to change the fingering pattern to be able to play decently erhu with 3 fingers?Thank you in advance for your reply.

Firstly I’m so sorry you can’t have your index finger for your learning! I also got the same problem could month ago, I fell down and index finger injured, my index finger is still pain, but I could use it to play some easy pieces. It may take three months to recover it. I can tell human’s index finger is a very important finger specially to a musician, even daily cooking without this finger is not convenient! If you only play some simple pieces, yes, you could play some music. I may make a video to demonstrate how to play music without the index finger. My answer is YES!

@@musichong Thank you very much for your feedback, I hope that your injury will heal quickly so that you can play again as before. What you are telling me encourages me to continue my project of learning the erhu even without being able to use my left index finger. Thank you for your advice. I would be very interested to know how to play the erhu without the index finger if some day you have the chance to make a video and show it to me. Thanks again for your answer and your time :)

I’m going to try and explain this as well as I can. So I got an erhu and I was really confused on why is sounded so weird like screeching. I am holding the erhu the way you are but it seems like my bow turns the two strings to the left instead of then being faced forward. Now when I turned the bow to the right the strings stayed facing forward and produced a sound. Do you know why that is. It seems like I would have to use my right hand for the strings and left hand for the bow instead of the other way around.

Mr Hong I see you use sponge like dampers instead of felt cloth ones am I right or am i just seeing wrong? I was under the impression from the place I bought my erhu that felt cloth dampers are much better than sponges but you are a very experienced player so I dont believe you would make such an easily correctable mistake as using the wrong damper.
@southpark5555
@southpark5555 Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking that if Hong is using those sponge dampers, and we can see that they're working, then using sponge dampers is not a mistake at all.

Hi what style of bow is that ? The one with the thin bamboo ? And is applying pressure to the outer string much easier than the standard type do you think ? ☺
@musichong
@musichong 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on your experience on the erhu, I use thick bamboo bow to practice, when I do the recording, I used little bit light one, the thick one could practice your arm muscle and moving bow speed.

Thank you for the tips! My question is how tight should the hair on the bow be to make the best sound?
@musichong
@musichong 3 жыл бұрын
Most beginners like tight bow, they thought could “easy” control the bow, because they don’t how, three points could control the bow easily. I suggest not too tight, after you know how to use the bow, little bit loose is easy play slow pieces.
