Speaking of 'signs'. It is very important that about 80% of non-fiction youtube videos (including this one) be listened to, WHILE NOT WATCHING THE VIDEO. The construction of the text or the essay of youtube video is the important part, that initiated the making of the video. In almost all videos, there is a need to 'sell' the video with attractive images. These actually *detract* from the message and distract you from important distinctions by making you consciously or unconsciously evaluate the video with questions of design elements. "Why that picture and not that diagram?" "Why are all those blue while the rest are green ?" If you care about the topic in this video, you owe it to yourself to watch it with a blank browser tab open, while you look around the room you are in.

Who is this video made for? It is so simplistic an analysis of Barthes that I wonder what level of signification he would place it at.
@Mr_Bunk5 жыл бұрын
He'd probably briefly analyse how the colours, textures, and soft presentation attempt to present the deceptive signification of a kind of 'soft education', before laughing on how much it misunderstands and oversimplifies his (and, to an extent, Saussure's) ideas for such a ridiculous and pathetic agenda. Though he was a socialist, he did not dwell so much on the 'bourgeois being dickheads' angle of semiology's use. Far more fascinating is his exploration on how semiology is a natural process that affects all of us all the time, especially with the ever-increasing popularity of the moving image. Whilst there is undeniably a political aspect to this, it should never be seen as frustratingly limited as this video may suggest. Anyway, I'm rambling. Video disliked.

It's for me. Someone who's just heard of him and is deciding whether or not this guy has any merit. Yes it's simplistic, but it's also 3 minutes long. But it at least gives me an idea on whether or not his ideas pique my interest enough to check out a longer video.

This video reminded me at the time they taped into my "rebellious" side, and how I found it ironic that Che, who was anti capitalist, became an icon for capitalism. Felt bad I didnt see the obvious before I even bought the shirt. :-/

I've being binge watching this chanel since this morning, 22 videos straight and i love them all, including this one, yet, i think they are emitting a value judgment and in doing so making a disservice to the audience. The example is clearly the Che, but why asume that people like the Che because of "rebelliousness" is patronizing, not offensive, dont thinks is intended to offend but is is hurtful, right, the man is not perfect, not even good or congruent, but the "mith" for those of us who find "some" of he's actions valuable or respectful is one of justice and selflessness, misguided if you want, but in the end the guy said goodbyes tho his children to go and died famelic in a hot and wet jungle because of what he considered moral, his murders were as as utilitarian in his mind as those of Hamilton or Washington were on theirs. i can see the value or at least respect his ideals and his conviction. for you to reduce him to a sign of rebelliousness is as sad as the cultural appropriation of his visage for mercantilist reasons. pour guy, all he did and all he sacrificed to end up as a meme, even in academia. man, that's the ultimate character assassination.
@bobdragon78874 жыл бұрын
well, you are over-interpreting what the idea was presented to the public. that's all. All of these are just your own interpretations, and clearly you don't know how to understand things in a bigger perspective. you seriously didn't understand how power structure and representations work in the society.

Aren't you incorrectly conflating a Black Panther-like man with Che Guevara? This is an extremely irresponsible mixing of signifiers... Everything you say could be applied to Che, but that is not his prevailing mythology. Don't radical black people get enough bad press without attributing to them things they did not do?

@mattkozusko93446 жыл бұрын
In addition to problem you point out here, this video also mangles one of Barthes' central points. Barthes uses as an important early example in *Mythologies* an image, from a French magazine cover, of a young black French soldier saluting, but his point isn't that the soldier is dangerous; it is, rather, that the image reads as "even the subjects of French colonialism love and serve the country of France." The dangerous mythology Barthes wants to illustrate centers on the violence done TO the soldier and his image.
@miguelangeloestorninho38816 жыл бұрын
It's just an example. Why should anyone think it is a bad example, It could have been any individual. The ones thinking that is a bad example, are the wrong ones. If we want to live in a equaly society, we must be willing to use any gender and race as an example. And must not be afraid of using it.

The image chosen looks quite like Samora Machel from Zimbabwe. But anyway, Barthes told us that every image has a meaning, and one can´t say it´s just an example. What a cheap excuse. It is a decision that has been taken and what lies under this image is not to be detached from the world or meaning. Everything has meaning and myths are made up through connotations which are connected to the socio political structures, worldview, ideologies; that is to say that myth tries to make us believe things have no meaning by de-politicizing, de-historizing - and I would also say - de-contextualizing them. We better think twice about this video and should not forget the connotation level can inhabit MULTIPLE meanings.
