An introduction to the TurnMaster from Robert Sorby

The Robert Sorby TurnMaster has several unique features and is suitable for woodturners of all levels including anyone that has never turned before.

I have been watching all the videos that I can before they come in. I am super new to turning. Actually, I realized that this is one of the tools in the set I bought. I bought the set with a parting tool and a roughing gouge.

I bought one of these, thinking it would be excellent, and on some projects it is very good. However I have since moved back to traditional bowl gouges and neg rake scrapers, as its just less hassle. I now only use the handles of the set I bought to hold sorby bowl gouges and George Watkins hollowing tools. In fact I dont think I’ve picked up the sovereign in over a year

I have been turning for about 4 months now and have become aware that keeping my tools sharp makes a huge difference. I bought the wooden handled turnmaster tool from woodcraft with the square, diamond and round cutting parts from HSS. Would I be better off with the titanium? And would I do better with multiple screw on parts each with a different turning tip for faster changing as opposed to using the little torque screw each time?

As a new turner, I'm a little concerned about having my tool rest so far from the work. Can you speak to that and proper lathe speed?

Are the hss high speed steel blade sharpened the same way as carbide blades just with a diomond stone and the top side of the blade gets sharpened?

Hi Ninjaman2191...Yes that is correct. it is the easiest way to maintain a crisp edge without wearing the cutter away

The tool shaft is round so why does the cutter have to be turned at the head when you could simply rotate the handle slightly?

Hi ....The TurnMaster has a flat section machined along the length of the shaft to give stability. The head rotates to the optimum indexed position so that the user does not have to worry if it is being held at the right angle.

Robert Sorby Ahha I see. I wondered how it wouldn't twist while under pressure from cutting. I have the RS 230KT and that's flat on the bottom as well. Thanks for the head's up.

it is easy to sharpen, but sharpening disc and rotary disc holder will cost you a lot( over hundred dollars) if you do commercial productions, then worth it. I saw you can do with 3M ceramic discs .
