Spokane, Washington, Christmas Eve, 1955. Big tree in the front of the church. Maryjean Burgemeier sang this from the balcony. I was 9 years old. I'll never forget it.

My favorite Christmas song! So beautifully done. Love hearing the sopranos hit those high notes! They are left out of so many covers of this, but are such an integral part of this song! Thank you! Beautiful!

Oh holy night, the stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior's birth Long lay the world in sin and error pining 'Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine, oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine Oh night, oh night divine Led by the light of faith serenely beaming With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming Here came the wise men from Orient land The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger For all our trials born to be our friend Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine, oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine Oh night, oh night divine

Quite magical performance. The clarity of the voices is breathtaking and the harmonics at the top of the last two phrases 3:57 & 4:15 so sublime. I use to think Sissel's version of "O Helga Natt" aged 18 on her 1987 album Glade Jul had the purest solo sound of this song although slightly masked by the accompanying organ, so this a cappella version is stunning. Indeed instruments too often for this song are used to fill-in the quieter moments allowing the vocals to only emerge at the end of each chorus, yet here there is space given by McGlynn's delicate arrangement and Anuna shine throughout.

I found the soloists voice very piercing in a way that makes my ears very uncomfortable (I listen with headphones) :( It may be the nature of her voice, but maybe less volume (in balance with the choir), softer vowels and stronger diction would have been better :D No doubt this is an excellent choir :)
@brucehutchison39466 жыл бұрын
Maybe you need better headphones.
@shubitoxX6 жыл бұрын
@@brucehutchison3946 Sorry to hear that, but loudness is not equal to quality. Maybe it's more of a problem in the recording and was better live, I don't know.
@anunachoir6 жыл бұрын
Might also be an ear issue - if you are listening to this too loudly that is one thing, but the sound is balanced to appeal to an average sonic appreciation.

@@anunachoir What do you think about the balance in kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaWun5iYqpp0qNU or kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKezqqGDfpuIo8U ? What I mean is that I prefer when there are less voices or people sticking out of the choir. You are right I usually listen with higher volume (with headphones) then others may, but I do this to increase the feeling of immersion (maybe there is a better word). I know it's not an easy task by any means and preference regarding music is very individual after all. I personally have often had the experience that the high registers of men or women voices tend to have this problem.

No - I understand - you like the remote sound that characterises much choral music today - the examples you give me sound like they were recorded in row 30 of a Cathedral. Not our thing at all. So yes - it is a matter of taste. We like the humanity, the flaw and the imperfection of reality. We aren't angels.
