An "Objective" Look at Fire Emblem: Awakening

cool video dude, I find that one of the reasons awakening is so loved by people despite all the very noticeable flaws, is that awakening has a sense a charm and personality that be honest, no other fire emblem game has achieved at this point (not to say that the other games don't have personality they most certainly do). From the characters, to the new art style, to the soundtrack, to the maps and even the story to an extent, awakening just has this charm to it that made playing the game so much of a fun and memorable experience that people often forget or over look its flaws the first time. I was very much the same since awakening used to be my favourite fire emblem game, but after playing through it again multiple times and looking at it more objectively it's not as great as I remember (and it's no longer my favourite FE game), but I still had just as much fun playing it despite this.

I feel the same. The newer games know how to affect me with just raw emotional power despite the flawed writing. Chapter 22 to 25 of Conquest does that beautifully, I think.

thanks a bunch man, I'm glad you liked it. this was certainly some of the most fun I've had editing and recording in a long time, especially that Anna segment, that a lone took me twenty minutes because i couldn't quit laughing so hard. that is one of awakening's strengths, it elicits that kind of nostalgic fun and personality, it doesn't matter how much the game is kinda dumb and unbalanced, it's fun, and that's really all that matters at the end of the day.

awakening, at least to me, screams of passion and the blood, sweat, and tears of a team trying to stay afloat with one last hurrah. even if i dont like parts of it it, theres at least some passion to it that just feels infectiously "fire emblem". Just another story in a long thread of stories. Too bad fates totally failed to deliver on that and felt more like a slog than a game. (in my opinion anyways)

that's debatable. It's a good Fire Emblem game, where it has good ideas but lacks in presenting them accurately. Other FE games do this the same way, and nobody calls those out as often (albeit some of them do the same as Awakening in my eyes). Awakening is a great FIre Emblem game, and in my eyes, it stands above the top 3 with Sacred Stones and Three houses.

I think I have to be the only one who genuinely liked the big plot twist of Awakening's third arc. I thought it was fell foreshadowed throughout the game and I liked how it was an interesting reversal on typical RPG storytelling by not only shifting focus to a character who is more of the traditional "best friend" type supporting character but also playing around with the idea of having the whole "Chosen one/destiny" idea be a purely negative thing that must be fought against. The only thing I disliked about it is that I wish they did more with the twist. It had so much potential for interesting character driven moments and exploration that they didn't do in the game and only touched upon slightly in the Future Past DLC. Then again, I am the type of garbage that writes fanfiction, so I may be deluding myself into seeing way more depth here than is actually there.

hey man, that's perfectly fine if you like the twist. and if you want some fanfic for you, how about this. instead of Robin being Grima, how about the Grima from the future latched itself on to Lucina, and when Lucina went back in time to stop Grima, she inadvertently brought grima back, allowing his revival in the first place and creating a time loop in the process.

ZerkMonsterHunter 4 Huh, that is a pretty interesting idea. It does fit the (admittedly) one big problem I do have with the twist: why the heck Grima didn't just resurrect himself if he could totally do that all along instead of trying to get past!Robin to do it. Because yeah, regardless of me liking the twist or not, that is still a big plothole. But as I did say before, I am basically the only person in existence who likes the whole idea of Robin being Grima's vessel. Even then though I will admit it is more because of how that could have been really interesting if they did more with it and explored the idea more than how it was actually handled. Like, have people react to this twist. Have Robin deal with the fact that he was born to be Grima's vessel and the guilt that in another timeline he basically caused all his friends to die. Have him be afraid it could still happen again. Have other chapters wonder if they can trust him. Show how the future characters would react to discovering Robin is the one responsible for their future something. Make a bigger deal about this in the final conflict of how Robin is rejecting that destiny and tie it back into the central themes of the whole time travel thing. There was so much more they could have done. Which is probably my overall complaint with Awakening's story. It had a lot of interesting ideas, but basically just glossed over everything and didn't explore said ideas like it should have,

ZerkMonsterHunter 4 You know, I was thinking about this a bit more, and I came to a realization regarding the problems with Awakening's story compared to the problems with Fates' story Awakening had a lot of interesting and cool ideas: but failed to really explore them or do much with those ideas. It sort of just glossed over them. I can't even say it did a bad job with most of those ideas, since it did almost nothing with them. Fates had a lot of interesting and cool ideas, but explored/portrayed them in the stupidest ways possible. It basically took good ideas, and screwed it up. So unlike Awakening it actually tried to do something with the ideas it had, but just didn't do a very good job.

Felt like the game was pretty amazing in it's story telling and gameplay in the 1st arc. Gangrel was a really good villian surprisingly, and he had good moments that made him just not another evil asshole unlike Valimar who was pretty much cardboard. The cutscenes starring a certain character were also very well done, and cemented her character so well that I wouldn't be surprised that they were the main reasons of her stunning popularity. Comparing the older games and the newer ones, I feel the thing that changed the most was the tone of the series. All of the fire emblem games are trying to portray a grand epic war that spans over multiple kingdoms, where older games tend to try and tell a story from where the player is making history and seeing the effects of it, complete with a narrator and overview of the world for each map so that it can set up the battles as mattering and important. Awakening and Fates do this on a more personal level, letting the characters themselves interact with voices and general conversations. The introduction of an avatar also helps with this allowing the player to immerse themselves in the world. Of course the weakness of this is that it does detract from the world building and urgency of each battle for me, which I loved about the older games. Also for anyone complaining about casual mode, don't. It's an easy way to get newcomers to get into Fire Emblem, and also allows the hardcore audience to choose not to participate in a mode, so it doesn't detract at all from that type of experience. More people = better games, it's a win win.

Matthew Arnold I'm going to have to disagree here. gangrel can really only be described as pathetic. that's about where his characterization ends in that regard. his​ motivation, while interesting is unclear. he just ends up being a poor man's Ashnard. it really plays into my biggest problem with Awakening's story, which is that it feels 10 chapters too short.

I do find the problem with Awakening was that it was mostly tell in a few sentences and no show and most elements did not get the development needed, which arc 2 unfortunately had suffered the most.More chapters would fix this,which I agree with but I believe the children maps took away the budget for this, so the story had to suffer . I can see why you'd think Gangrel would be pathethic. I would honestly say the same, but I feel some of his quotes in his final chapter did manage to actually challenge Chrom. Even though Gangrel was a big hypocrite in that regard, I do feel with more development, his words wouldn't have been hollow. Shouldn't have said he was a really good villian, but had the potential to be, and I do appreciate at the attempt. I don't see how he's a poor man Ashnard however, as Ashnard was the embodiment of the Strong will rule over weak, while Gangrel was more about revenge for the previous exalts actions which was never elaborated on due to Awakening's limited storytelling in that regard. (For something exactly like what I'm talking about, Garon's previous personality as told by the Nohrian royal family was only ever said and never shown, and only brought about a few sentences whenever the topic of it came up in the game. The result is that the development wasn't close to complete, so you can't form any solid opinions on him except from what you see during direct gameplay.) My form is messy and hard to read, so sorry if this is a pain in the eyes lol.

My first game was Sacred Stone's and it was amazing, my friend let me borrow the game way back and some how finished it. Personally I loved Awakening aswell with the ability to reclass multiple times, the team up element, Skills(my fav), multiple characters, and a cool simple story. You can also recruit all the old characters like marth... my god its amazing. I still prefer sacred stones, that sexy story and nostalgia. The street pass is amazing as well. So many people at Anime Expo, so many broken avatars I recruited. Awaking is a gem that saved the series, Hell it was $45 used at game stop. Definitely keeping mine.

My first FE game funnily enough was actually Radiant Dawn, which I just randomly picked up because it was on sale. You can already imagine how that went lmao. I got my ass handed to me, even on easy mode I was straining to complete each chapter with all my units intact (MICAIAH WHY DO YOU SUCK SO MUCH). And for the longest time that was the only FE game I ever played but I eventually got around to playing PoR and then went from there to playing and finishing FE 4,5,6,7,8, Awakening, and Fates along with the Tellius games that hooked me.

one thing about Awakening that i'm not too fond of is the changes to the support system, specifically how it gives bonuses (not that this is my only issue with Awakening but for this comment it's the one i'll address). in older Fire Emblem characters would give bonuses to each others by being 3 spaces away from each others while in Awakening and Fates characters can only give bonuses through the pair up mechanic. that older support system may have indeed needed some limitations so that it wouldn't be overpowered, actually i think it was too limited, but if you positioned your supported characters wisely it was a very useful mechanic and before you tell me that some supports don't give good bonuses in the end victory in Fire Emblem is more about strategy that stats (sometimes i intentionally use weaker characters just for the added challenge). in the Tellius game support bonuses even helps to make Laguz units more worthwhile since you can support them with a Beorc. simply put that Beorc unit at the end of the enemy's attack range then put the unshifted Laguz close enough to give support bonuses but keep them out of enemy attack range, once the Laguz can shift send them on the offensive. since Laguz units don't have weapon durability they can help you to save some gold. i'm not saying that the changes Awakening made to support bonuses are bad just that i preferred how it worked in older Fire Emblem games. supertimer.deviantart.com/art/FE9-Ike-s-Supports-2-93331689

I still to this day never understood the Galeforce hype. What does it accomplish, besides making the broken even more broken? I remember when people talked about only using certain pair-ups for the sole purpose of every child unit getting Galeforce. What's more, it gives you no real benefit since the requirements to get it usually also result in the unit being overleveled to all hell. By that point, Galeforce finally IS useful because it lets you sprint through all the maps even faster. I think it also suppresses the strategy aspect of the game because you just end up trying to make units that can kill everything in one round.

no offense, and i mean no offense. you just described exactly why galeforce is broken. with ho busted re-class and pair up are in awakening, the game is incredibly biased, galeforce pretty much acts as a personal dancer class for (possibly) all of your units. yeah it's kinda hard to build but the payoff is pretty much a win button.

Now that I think about it, Awakening trying to add as many features in as possible caused a quantity over quality effect. Three story arcs, children system, casual mode, heavy support system. It was much worse in Fates having three stories, two times the units and even more of what I've mentioned causing my problem(s) in Awakening. It kind of reminds me of Sonic '06 having about 15 gameplay styles but Fire Emblem's grid based gameplay already makes the bare structure all but done especially with 12 games before the thirteenth. This might have caused why it can be seen as a disappointing entry.

I started with FE7 and i like its setting and characters the most (havent played PoR nor RD yet). Most of the characters in FE7 who represented each region felt full of hm culture, i really liked how all the areas had a focus on class mastery like Lycia with the cavaliers, Ostia with the Knights, Eutria with magic.. it give's FE7's world this feel of being quite ample. Karel is probably the most interesting character in that game.. But my fav character in the whole series has to be Lon'qu, because.. i feel like he does a perfect job representing the Myrmidon class. Someone who has a justified obsession to master the sword.

Still not convinced lol ok ok here are the big guns, when lonqu wanted to forget is fear of girls tharja then does a past mind reading retual to then find out about lonqu spats which is whe he was young he was forbidden buy a dad to see his girlfriend and one day she snuck out to go to lonqu and whe she did a village was being attacked and lonqu went to help save it and in the battle lonqu lost his girlfriend, unable to face her parents about her death he leaves and becomes a mercanary pushing away his experience and traumatised to be near any girl, tharja then feels sad and lonqu then says if she is crying (or blushing) , would a yandere do this lol...unless she's the reason why everyone died in the real timeline

I don't know if you guys would agree with me, but one of the big parts why I love Awakening is because of the ridiculous class system. Sure it was unbalanced and overpowered, but I got to say it was freaking fun. Awakening was the only Fire Emblem game that I enjoyed playing in Lunatic difficulty because of the class system. And do you know what is the best thing about it? You don't have to use it at all. You can just have all the characters stay in the same class and play it the old fashion way. And adding the children into the mix, oh man oh man. That right there is 100+ hours of gameplay. Maybe 1000+ be cause of the replayability. Honestly out of all the Fire Emblem games, I played Awakening the most. And now I am going to play Lunatic+ Classic mode where no one dares to go

Hey zerk, if you get a chance or have some time, i would heavily recommend fe5 thracia 776. its hard as balls and the translation patch is super shoddy, but the map design is fantastic, the story is pretty good, leaf is an incredible protagonist, the game looks good, and it will test you. It also adds some really cool features which i wish would make a return, like the capture and endurance systems

That's the thing though--a terrible plot can be carried by good or phenomenal characters. Rarely can a good or great plot carry bad characters. This is why FE Awakening does so well. You also have a ton of variety, which only adds to this character strength.

Awakening did not introduce me to fire emblem, but it did bring me back to it. My first time playing I loved it, but much less so the second time. The two big things that bothered me were the plots and characters. The first half of awakening was okay plot wise, but the later parts with the children was just stupid i think. The characters, while they seem interesting, take one single characteristic and run with it. Like a lot. And while there are a lot of interactions that are unique, they're almost all based around the defining characteristic of the character. Gaius likes candy. Sumia likes Chrom. Donnell is a farmer. None of the really change or grow. Some change a tiny bit, but compare them to Jill in FE9 and an entire arc just for her. We see Lethe and Soren go from hating each other to I guess tolerating each other. We see Shinon as an asshole, but while drunk her reveals how much he missed and loved Greil. The only character I really hate in that series is Illyana. Who only has one characteristic. She is hungry. I think she'd fit well in awakening. The other thing I didn't like was map design. For the most part the maps were a flat plain. Some levels are good, but honestly forests and cliffs go a very long way in making a level good. Oh okay one last thing. I HATE the armor knight looks. So stupid. I cringed every time I saw one.

On what you said about the unbalanced re-classing system, I actually think this benefits the game. While I do see your point on the flaws from a game design perspective, I think the fact that you could make anyone you wanted good (or god level) with the time and effort only served to get us even more attached to the characters, who are the focal point of the game. In all the previous games an unlucky streak is all it took to make a character bad or even useless, even if you really loved the character.

Point 1: Plot and Characters Mustafa man... he was a memorable character. Everyone else in Plegia were all being bad and such, but then we have Mustafa and his men and they were really good. Hell, during the fight, Mustafa ordered any men that no longer wished to fight to leave while he remained, because he knew that he had to or his family would be killed, and his men were moved by his conviction and decided that if they cannot fight for Plegia's cause, then they would fight for Mustafa. Such loyalty and virtue is something I wished that more characters in Awakening had, particularly in the enemy characters so I would feel more when we realize that this was so sad and such. LMAO XD Okay, that comment about Robin made me laugh a lot. Robin, or as I like to call "Mark if he gave a damn!" That makes sense, considering how Mark in Blazing Sword did nothing but somehow direct us. Or maybe we are Mark... Dude, if you check out Ghast's video about Mark and the connection with Awakening and such, its hilarious and he even talks of making the Church of Marc/k. XD And while people complain about the waifu thing, everyone should realize like you said, its purely optional. You don't HAVE to do it at all. And wow, someone likes to ship with Anna. You know, after playing the old FE games, there is one thing that annoys me. A tradition in FE was that the Anna in the games back then would be in a relationship with a man named Jake. However, now Jake is completely gone and isn't even mentioned. I think this is because otherwise, we can't marry Anna. Point 2: Gameplay Galeforce is broken as hell. In fact, this is why people consider Female Robin to be superior to Male Robin. I think this is precisely why Galeforce not only got nerfed by saying that you have to be unsupported when beating an enemy, but also making it unisex cause otherwise boys are useless cause they just can't do anything. The DLC actually provided with us getting a glimpse of the old heroes and how they interact with characters. And how they talk to Robin when recruiting, though the Einherjar of The Whitewings, Eldigan, and Katarina never get a recruitment comment. Maybe cause they aren't in the 1-2-3 sets of things while the others were. But seeing how you can respond to them and seeing how they are is interesting where Robin could relate to them, or reject their ideas. The soundtrack is amazing, though Fates did wonderful with Lost in Thoughts All Alone, because it was a song that sort of got me hooked when I heard it, cause it was interesting. Sure they ended up making the song be seriously stupid, especially in Heirs of Fate, but overall the song was nice. The artstyle was nice, but everyone makes fun of it because they got no feet. XD Though I dislike that the animation from the GBA games where things were holy shit epic, and here it was a bit meh. Maybe the animation was tough to do here as opposed to when it was on GBA. Maybe they'll get better for FE15. - Awakening might not have been as epic or grand as the previous games were, but it isn't the worst, even before Fates. As you said, Awakening helped you get introduced in FE. I said Shadow Dragon was my first game, but I hated it, but Awakening got me back in and gave me so many ideas for fanfics that I wanna go through with infinite potential.

Sacred Stones, while very easy, it makes self-imposed challenges very easy to create, and is probably the best fire emblem game to speedrun, also has the best ORIGINAL story in the series, (FE4 doesn't count because it was based on a nordic book.) of course, that's just my opinion.

Very good vid for an objective perspective for the game. for me my first game was the shadow dragon remake on the ds after maining ike in brawl and wanting to know more about his series but once i played awakening i was hooked. i totally agree that this game was based on the characters more than the story but in a sense it made like the story a little more because of the characters. to me i really like the brokeness of gameplay but only to the point of limitless level grinding thanks to the second seal system. I dont like it when the rng screws me over and gives me no stat to only one stat boost. at least the second seal reset your level so you dont need to worry that you have a limit to your stats and need the items to boost your stats Overall nice video.

Let's just get one thing clear. People are afraid of change, thus the generation gap. thanks man. i think awakening is a good game, my feeling is that with just how different it was, I've heard many people look at Fe7 and say "I can't do X,Y and Z like i could in awakening, i think this game is bad." which is a real shame because people are missing out on one of the best SRPGs ever made. while I can find my peace with awakening with what it is as a game, and consider it a separate entity from the classic series, when somebody like Etika (no offense to him, dude's funny as fuck) claims to be a fire emblem fan, i can't help but chuckle a little, as much as I really shouldn't. and also, the feet thing, well, that's a low blow, even for a guy who spent twenty minutes on a 13 second Anna joke.

I know Fire Emblem games don't normally put such a focus on the Avatar (Not counting Fates since that was after Awakening) But was the change really such a terrible thing? This game wasn't like most FE's where it's almost entirely focused on one war with a lot of moral grey, but from the beginning of the game that was kind of the point.

I know people who have played PoR and RD first. I notice that even more than FE4 fans (and yes I know how we act normally) PoR and RD fans seem to be more rabid and fanatic about those games. ZerkMonsterHunter 4 I remember when I first played Awakening I really liked it and said it was the best game on the 3ds (I still like it and think it is imo) I remember when telling people about it I told them the story was average at best and had that save the world feel from most RPGs and that the best part of the game was the characters (many I find to be deeper than the anime stereotypes if you look at their supports like it is in many FE games). Admittedly I did like Awakening's broken mechanics like the 2nd seals, grinding and other stuff only because I liked making OP teams just to mess with people on Streetpass. Otherwise I would play no grind runs.

If i had to make a list i would put awakening at the bottom, but that doesnt mean i hate it. I think its flaws out weigh the goo it did bring to the series. Boring map design, a story with no focus, unbalanced gameplay mechanics. And i would disagree with you on the characters, even with supports i found at least that they all had one note personalitys that they never really strayed from. There was backstory sure but never any change or development. Lonqu and Panne were the only ones i found remotely interesting. Thats not to say i hate awakening, no im very happy for what it did to intsys, even if fates was a mess. Im just praying for more advance wars games. I started with PoR, then eventually got the GBA games. Awakening was alright on the first playthrough, but its bad balancing and map design easily make it the most overrated game in the series. It's still not the worst game. Shadow Dragon gets that title.

I kinda agree. I too started with Path of Radiance, (although in 2016 on an emulator because Ike was in it and fuck those prices) then played the GBA games on my GBA phone emulator so I could have an rpg to fiddle around with on my somewhat new phone. Then after some time passed, I paid for Awakening and Echoes with my own money to support the series and to see how the 3DS games were like. I personally like Awakening for what it is and I do go back to it time and time again but good lord the difficulty balancing is atrocious. As for the map design, I don't think it's as bad as Genealogy's or Echoes' maps but it is rather mediocre compared to the GBA and Tellius games' map design as a whole.

i think people who complain FE being too anime never really understand how japan works, Awakening or any other FE games are marketed for Japanese people in mind and not really the western side, saying that Awakening was the one that started this anime arch-type thing when it was also present in the old GBA games and the Tellus games, Awakening gets this hate becoz i think the anime arch-type is just a bit more apparent in them than the older games becoz like i said its marketed to japanese people and those distinct arch-types are what usually sell there and they never had the western market in mind. I found that the only ones that feel out of place in these games were Sumia, Severa, Owain and Cynthia because out of all the characters they feel more like like the typical Clumsymoe, Tsundere, Chuuni and Genkimoe but through supports you understand why theyre like this(though Sumia is kind of iffy on reasons for me) Fire Emblem as a whole is a character driven game, if you dont like anyone or relate to anyone in the game, youd have a hard time going through the game, even the way the gameplay is set up so you can have a specific unit you like to take center stage and solo hordes of enemy(though maybe not always) is structured with this in mind even the creator said so. sure awakenings plot maybe simple and at the last arc totally out of left field but thats because they expect people to care more about the characters and expect that to propel the player to move towards the end game, and thats why i feel like we got the Grimleal arc because the game wanted to put the spotlight on the avatar as the final act of the game. The story is structured as Gangrel arc being the introductory arc, the Valmese arc is there to develop chrom as a leader, to flesh out the other Parent character and to give an opening act to Lucina's and the childrens plight and the Grimleal arc is the final curtain act for both Lucina and Robin because thats how everything boils down to, though im pretty sure they could have bridged the 2 arcs better =/ For whats its worth the marriage mechanic works for only and i mean only Awakening, because we have a 2 timeline that were tackling in Awakening(Chrom's present and Lucina's future) Fates basically bastardized this with the introduction of the Deep Realm and that shit just doesnt work in the overall narrative of Fates unlike in awakening where it is actually crucial to the narrative of the game. Gameplay i admit playing awakening and BR first then going back to old games basically makes sure youre going to get your ass handed to you on a silver platter but it did give me the core mechanics of the game(but it didnt prepare me for FOG Goddamit FOG im glad youre not around in the newer games) and its more streamlined and easy to pick up and play rather than the old games (old games never told you about CON and how it affects speed) i think its like this because of how FE had for a long while this Stigmata of being only for the hardcore SRPG gamers only and Awakening being supposedly the last one, they decided to tone down the difficulty so as to make sure a lot more casual gamers can pick it up, its in a way the thing they thought of in order to save the series. all in all i think Awakening is a great Gateway game for the series it has enough make new gamers be interested in the game and if they crave more they can go back to 12 other games for a fuller experience and that in itself is what i think makes it a good game, other older fans of the series only thinks its so terrible because theyre accustomed to the older games. and if Awakening failed just imagine we wont have anymore FE and then people would start bitching about it like Megaman i like youre thoughts man, though i feel like you need to polish your scripts a bit more and on how you deliver them on camera but overall keep it up!

I personally loved the reclassing in Awakening. But galeforce was broken. All characters do need more importance. And don't get me started on Anna. I do fail to see alot of the so called plot holes in the story. They pairing system was great and was Fates did to it was total crap. When I pair up I don't want just defense if they're considered one unit. Also breakable weapons need to return cause taking a blow to your stats in Fates was stupid. But legendary weapons do need to be unbreakable. I never understood why Awakening allowed them to break. I think that's all. Sorry just had to vent there.

The pairing up was unpredictable in awakening. Which is something I did like. I never knew when the guard was gonna happen. Made it epic when a character was to take a killing blow but to be blocked. In fates it was like oh no. He's gonna die. Oh the meter is not up. Well shit.

I thought awakening was a good game but not a good fire emblem game it was way to easy and the plot was really bad I also didn't like the waifu simulator parts and why was there an avatar why

Awakening was an experiment, in my mind, the fact that it tried to do so much to appeal to a wider audience hurt it overall.

I like 7 I like echoes I've played through birthright, new mystery of the emblem, shadow dragon and binding blade. Awakening is still my favorite. I.e. We're not all noobs and weebs, so please stop ragging on people who like it, fandom. Thanks.
