Johnny Fontaine was based on Frank Sinatra. The movie he wanted to be in was From Here to Eternity for which he received an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor and helped to revive his singing career after a time where he lost his voice. After his comeback was some of his best work at Capitol Records in the 50’s and 60’s.

Neither age nor length nor subject matter keep you from your masterclass of '70s and '80s filmmaking, Madison. Fantastic video. Instead of waiting to make a joke, it's clear you're watching the movie and taking it all in. It's a lot of fun going on this ride with you. One of the things that nearly got Francis Coppola fired on _The Godfather_ is that he spent a lot of time casting the extras. Maybe you didn't notice. I'm not sure I ever have. But in 1970 it was common to see the same sorts of New York actor faces in the background. Coppola wanted an authentic look. To Paramount, extras were extras. They thought Coppola didn't understand how to make a movie. In fact, he was changing how movies would be made.

I think at the end, Kay asks Michael if it's true because to that point she has complete faith in him. So whatever he says, she'll accept as the truth. Then he lies and she believes him. But when she's looking back at him through the door she sees his people literally kissing up to him. I think in that moment she realizes it was true, which means he lied. Her whole life just unraveled. I think Luca was killed due to a miscalculation of his boss. When Sonny spoke up in the meeting in favor of the drug deal, it told Sollozzo that if he got rid of Vito he could make a deal with Sonny. One problem Sollozzo would have to overcome is Luca's support of Vito Corleone. But Vito sent him to spy, which put Luca in reach of S0llozzo and his partners. So they took advantage of the opportunity and killed him.
@izzonj

Sending Luca was a miscalculation on two level - the tataglias knew that Luca would have been very dangerous if Vito were killed. But also, they knew Luca was very loyal to the Don and was faking dissatisfaction with the Corleone family.

In the restaurant when Michael was about to kill Sollozzo and McKlusky, and they were speaking Italian, a rough translation is: "I want you to know that what happened with your father was just business, not personal. I have great respect for your father, but his way of thinking is old fashioned. I did what I had to do. He was standing in the way of my business. The other families agree with me. What happened was inevitable. If your father were in better health and your brother not in charge, we would not be fighting now. But now I want a truce. We will stop fighting until your father is well, and we can resume negotiations. I want peace, but he must stop interfering."

This is the source of a lot of sayings that have come into the American zeitgeist: - An offer he couldn't refuse - leave the gun, take the cannollis - sleeps with the fishes - wake up with a horse's head - go to the mattresses - like Sonny Corleone at a toll booth in Jersey - Moe Green Special

Best summary of The Godfather I ever heard: "Never has violence looked so beautiful." Love the editing in this film. . .By the way, there was a major flaw in the story that I caught when reading the novel. The killing of Sunny occurs on the Robert Moses Causeway, but that road wasn't even built until about ten years later (something only an old New Yorker would know). Looking for a suggestion? Check out The Freshman, where Brando recreates his role from this one in a wonderfully comedic way.

It's different for women at that time in Italy/Sicily. The women didn't ask questions about t h e husband's business dealings. Kay, being an independent American woman, and not of Italian descent, felt free to inquire about such things. This started the breakdown of her relationship with Michael. It is true, Appolonia was Michael's true love. Kay was more of a marriage of convenience.

Regarding Michael's leadership, remember his uniform at the wedding & how he was described as a war hero? A Marine Captain in WWII? That means the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific against the Japanese as a junior officer directly leading troops in jungle fighting. Solazzo and McCluskey were almost certainly not the first men he killed at bad-breath distance. He'd had a master-class in ruthless brutality before he got dragged into the Family business.

I am happy to see someone besides myself acknowledge how much music plays a part in films, and how without it the movie is much more powerful. I stopped putting score music as oppose to source music in my projects and I don't miss it for one second. In many ways I think adding score music is cheating because it covers up for what may be a totally bland scene by adding nice music to distract from the bland. Roger Deakins is another believer that avoids adding distracting and artificial thongs in movies, like lens flares etc. Lots of movie that are liked wouldn't be as liked without the score, which to me tells us the underlying films isn't as good, and they had to put "sugar" on top for it to "taste" better.

Some fun little nuggets for ya that I got from the documentary. The actress who plays Connie, Talia Shire, is the sister of the director Francis Ford Coppola. In the scene where Carlo beats Connie he got too out of hand and too physical and left actual marks on her. As director, Coppola directed James Caan (Sonny) to make the scene where he beats up Carlo look "real" wink wink. Another is that the actor who was slated to play Luca Brazi got ill at the last minute. Desperate for an imposing figure the producer hired real life New York mob enforcer Lenny Montana. The movie could not be made without the blessing of NYC crime boss Joe Colombo. Montana was Colombo's body guard and chief enforcer who just happened to be on the set one day while a few of Colombo's men were watching the filming.

and yes, that was a real severed horse's head and the response from the actor was authentic. Backstory: the director thought the dummy horse head used in rehearsals looked too fake, and he had some staff go to a nearby dog food factory (yes, they used horse parts back in the day for dog food) and brought them a real head and placed that under the sheets to shoot the scene, and did not tell the actor beforehand. needless to say, there was only one take. "Take the cannoli" was improvised by the actor, Richard Castellano, who was only supposed to say, "Just leave the gun." And technically, Michael did not kill Carlo. He ordered it, but in his mind, he can argue that he did not personally kill him. But once Kay saw the others kiss his hand--her expression showed she realized all her fears and suspicions were true.

The book this was adapted from is also amazing. Pretty much what was in the movie, except it had a little more to it: - there's a scene after the reception where Vito, his three sons, and his godson Johnny Fontane go to visit the Coreleone family's long-time Consigliere Genco Abbadendo as he lays dying in a hospital (this scene was actually shot, but was omitted from the film) - the book also follows the story of Johnny Fontane after he gets that part, and becomes a Sinatra-like pop singer with his old neighborhood friend as his piano player - it dives into Vito's backstory and how he came to America - it also follows Lucy Mancini (the bridesmaid Sonny was nailing during the wedding reception) as she follows the Coreleone family out to Las Vegas and hooks up with a quack plastic surgeon as a new lover. (Btw, that scene with Sonny and the bridesmaid was described in the book, and it reads like a Penthouse Forum letter.)

It's just so perfect. That last shot always gets me. In that moment we are Kay. We've spent the whole movie rooting for the Corleone family and revenge and Michael. in that moment we come to a horrifying realization. That we've fallen in love with the devil. Michael, as a mob boss, will go on to have hundreds of men and women killed, others tortured. He'll ruin thousands of lives while never questioning the morality of it.... And it's too late. Now he's ours.

I think Sonny was potentially a great leader for the family but he had two terrible flaws that made him the wrong man for the job: 1. He was too emotional and lost his temper too easily. He followed his heart where he should have listened to his father and followed his head. This is most definitely what cost him the ultimate price on the causeway. And: 2: He didn't see far enough ahead. All he could see was winning the war RIGHT NOW and the money he could make by getting into the narcotics trade...which was a thing that his Pop had already explained to him why it shouldn't be done. Also, he didn't trust Tom Hagen enough. Tom Hagen was not Italian, but he had a real understanding of the "big picture," second only to the Don and then Michael. Michael was cold. He was a thinker and an engineer for what he needed to happen. Once they murdered His wife in Italy, He became heartless. He became the Godfather. He WAS the Godfather. So he went home, listened to Pop, and took out all the competition, including those who murdered his wife, in one fell swoop and then he was free to do whatever he wanted without resistance for years and years to come. Even then, he still had to spend more time tying up all the loose ends. That was where he was better than Santino...he saw the loose ends far ahead of time and he was patient enough to wait for that perfect moment, to plan it and to carry it out flawlessly because he could do it without emotion, without feeling. Genius acting by all, genius filmmaking by Coppola. This is one film that may never be surpassed. It may very well be the greatest movie ever made. Part 2 is very nearly as perfect, but imo, this one takes the trophy. Your reaction was superb. You are very intelligent. Subscribed!

In all of the Godfather films, you notice they never intentionally targeted the women. Apollonia's death was accidental, the bomb was placed in the car to kill Michael because they thought he would be driving, they couldn't have foreseen that Apollonia was going to drive the car over to where Michael was to show him she'd been practicing her driving. In that regard, marrying into one of the families didn't pose a threat to the women as you suggested was dangerous to Apollonia and made her a target.

The scene at Woltz's is great. It's so genius because the fact that it happened in his home and bedroom means that some of his house staff were in on it, and he couldn't be safe in his own home, as well as the symbolism of his prized possession and symbol of his manhood (horse was going to be put out to stud). Great reaction! But on the subject of "a normal life," I know you've only seen *one* GF movie at this point, but by the time the series is over, an argument has been proffered that the mafia *is* "normal." Throughout most of U.S. history, crime syndicates have worked with each other, the police, the FBI, and CIA (it's possible you've heard the name Whitey Bulger or know something about the assassination of John F. Kennedy). While the Mafia of old is extinct, crime syndicates remain a vital part of the U.S. political/economic establishment, trafficking in everything under the sun. But returning to our movie, Michael went from one kind of *normal* life, a soldier fighting a war -- for a nation that would proceed to enfold tens of thousands of high-ranking Nazis into its national security apparatus -- to another kind of *normal* life, as a ruthless-as-necessary son/capo fighting for the survival of his family, because no one else was up to the job (essentially, he went from fighting one war to fighting another because Santino and Fredo were moral/intellectual weaklings, and Connie, as a woman, wasn't eligible for the recently-vacated position). For more interesting insights into normalcy, you might want to give Peter Medak's THE RULING CLASS a viewing!!! Arguably Peter O'Toole's finest performance!!!

Actually, I think the turning point for Michael was standing on the steps outside the hospital where his father was a patient with Enzo, the baker or just a few minutes before that perhaps. In his father's hospital room Michael told his father that he was with him now, it was like fuck it, I'm part of the business of the Family now, i HAVE to be to protect the life of my father whom I love, but outside, on the steps with Enzo we see two ex-servicemen who have both seen violence, both been in war, and unarmed as they are they bluff assassins away from making another attempt on Vito's life. But their reactions were different. Enzo was clearly scared out of his wits, shaking, but Michael was calm, composed, not a sign on nervousness or trembling. At that point Michael realized that he was not only IN the Family business but he was pretty damned good at it as well.

You do movie reviews well; I think it has to do with your willingness to let your sensitivity show. I was particularly impressed with your insight about how Kay would've become known about town as being connected to Michael's family, since she attended the wedding (and a big one, at that). I haven't read the book; however, it may be that Michael was having serious thoughts about staying in Italy with Apollonia forever. Michael's return to Kay is indicative of his complete character change: He doesn't want her for who she is: He wants her the way he wants anybody: He wants her for what he can get from her, which is to say, an heir. His renunciation of Satan and all his works in a church, duringt a baptism; and while becoming the godfather to his sister's child (so that Michael can ultimately murder Carlos) all constitute a perfectly satanic expression of what Michael has now become: The Godfather, yes...and a monster. Shakespeare said it best in his play, King John, wherein the king (in speaking of himself) says, "No beast so fierce but knows some touch of pity, / But I know none, and therefore am no beast."

I enjoyed your reaction. Thank you. In my opinion, The Godfather 2 is a kind of fanfiction. Of course, that would be the best fanfiction ever.

Great review of one of the best films of all time. This is one of the rare movies as good as the book. Read Mario Puzo's novel and you'll appreciate the movie all the more.

In the famous horse's head scene, Coppola used a real horse's head from a butcher shop without telling the actor in advance, so at least part of his shocked reaction was real.

"Who is Johnny?" Actually Johnny Fontaine was Frank Sinatra, the future boss of Vegas. The movie story was real. He got an oscar for the film. Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor 1953 for From Here to Eternity, his first unsung film.

No. Johny Fontaine was NOT Frank Sinatra. The bandleader story is based on an incident in Frank's life. It involved the famous bandleader Tommy Dorsey and Frank's godfather (who was an underboss in the Genovese Crime family) and forced Dorsey to release Frank from his contract for the payment one dollar. By the time FROM HERE TO ETERNITY was made Frank's godfather had already been dead for two years. The 1948 film THE MIRACLE OF THE BELLS was Frank's first non-singing part (he played a Roman Catholic Priest). The critics hated it, naturally, but it was actually quite good. Fred MacMurray (Double Indemnity) Alida Valli (The Third Man and the original (1977) version of SUSPIRIA and Lee J. Cobb (12 Angry Men and The Exorcist, among others) all turned in fine performances. So did Frank.

Right. And of course if they had called him "Frank Sinatra", they would have been liable for lawsuits and--I'm serious--a permanent visit to the fishes.

Michael HAD to keep Kay away from that part of his life, or she becomes an accessory after the fact. Michael has promised Kay the Corleone Family will be completely legitimate in 5 years. So maybe then he can be open about his newly legitimate business. The baptism is the most famous scene in movie history. Only the Odessa Steps sequence in Potemkin comes close. Michael becomes a godfather TWICE in that baptism. And in that moment, he loses his soul.

Yes, this is a great movie. But the book is five times better. Even Captain McCluskey is a three-dimensional character in it. And the book explains why Michael didn't shoot Solozzo and McCluskey right when he got back from the toilet, and many other things.
