Nurseries sell "powder puff" varieties with layers of petals, but I prefer the single layered sort that have the usual "hibiscus" look. Mucilaginous? So I guess the Mallow family were used to invent marshmallows with? lol
@thederb72023 күн бұрын
I think there are many varieties.Yes they are somewhat mucilanginous...like their mallow cousins

Hollyhocks are very closely related to Marshmallows, so close infact I suspect they can actually cross. Both seeds look extremly similar & are close on phylogenic trees. My friend tried dehydrating black petals of Hollyhock & found the flavor tasted like Marshmallows. Multi Petal layers may yield more powder, I didn't know they existed, are they like a double petaled version?
@zuditaka23 күн бұрын
@@ProfesorPorcupine-yy5bt Yes, double or triple petalled like a powder puff! Look on google images...

I'm so Happy you did a video on HollyHocks! AWESOME! Every video is such a joy, I look forward to each & everyone! Thank you! 0:00 WOW, I just love that song. Has a Ninja Old School vibe! 2:42 Now that Fungal disease is something to breed for! In my area, I haven't seen that disease. Maybe I'm luck or Maybe the strain is disease resistant. If there's any plant without fungal issues save those seeds! They likely contain resistant genes! 2:55 WOW, I've never seen a Yellow one. These would make such an amazing Salad. They seem superior to Rose mallow (Hibiscus moschestos), taste wise. 4:45 Oh wow! They're like mini Okra's right? Or are they more closer to Mallow Cheese wheels in taste? (I ask because Mallow, Marshmallow & Hollyhock are very closely related according to Phylogenic trees).This is a trait I'm looking to explore in breeding. Have you noticed difference in flavor, texture form each variant or do they all basically taste the same?
@thederb72023 күн бұрын
I'll have to tell my friend's son who compose the song--he'll appreciate you comment. Good idea to save seeds form those plants that don't have the fungus. Wet weather might cause this to appear--dry weather not so much?? Their "cheeses" are mild --seem to be similar to the small mallow plants that I've found.

@@thederb720 Fantastic! Mild flavored Cheese Seed Wheels is what I like, Can't wait to domesticate that trait & improve size, thank you for the valuable info!

So happy that the hollyhocks came to visit, Blanche! The mallow family is full of lovely variants. Again, you've found one of my inspirations: Street Kids Toes of hollyhocks dig deep into crannies of the sidewalk; stalks grow tall and lounge against the wall. They loiter there all summer, busking for smiles. --MC 8/2010

Cool poem-did you write it?? Now the Hollyhocks come back every year in my garden and even have seeded themselves.
@chezmoi4223 күн бұрын
@@thederb720 Yes, thanks, that's one of mine. Nature provides so much subject matter, all we need to do is look around and take notice, just as you do for your artwork. Years ago, when I saw your pine pollen video, I was reminded of this one I'd written a few years earlier: Strange Bedfellows Russet bags in hands of spendthrift pines burst open, spill their golden dust in drifts that float across the forest, fields, and vines to pollinate my car.
