Hi everyone, how is your soap making going? I hope you enjoy this simple recipe. I know many of you in the US and Europe can't easily get rice bran oil, but you can make this recipe with olive oil too! I just wanted to show how nice this is (check out the lather test at the end) and it's actually more balanced than olive oil, as a single oil soap recipe, and isn't slimy like olive oil soap! Anyhow, have fun with it. Let me know if you make it, or if you have any questions. The details are in the video description 💚

Good morning from Tennessee! I just want to thank you for this recipe and let you know I have successfully made 4 double batches of this. All came out beautifully and each scent smells AMAZING!!! I did want to add a tip and which Rice Bran Oil I ordered for everyone. I decided to use ice cubes instead of room temp water and it did not trace quickly which is a wonderful thing! It gave me the time I needed to get all the soap in to my molds with plenty of extra time to create designs on top. In fact, I had to wait about 20 mins before it was set up enough for the designs to hold. I purchased to RBO from Amazon from a shop named Gourmanity at $28.98 for 1.32 gallons. Amazing price, compared to most, and it is top notch oil with great reviews. Again, Thank you so much for this olive oil alternative! You are a lifesaver, Elly, and I absolutely love your content 💓

I buy olive oil at my wholesale club, but it doesn't seem cost effective anymore. I started using more canola oil in my soaps. However. Hi Elly! I was researching and my usual store sells rice bran oil, imported from Mexico and costs twice as much as olive oil. There is none in the supermarket and, in the manufacture of soap, here we use 5-20%, a bit like castor oil. Olive oil prices have also increased significantly here in the last 2 years, but they have already been recovering. I forgot to mention that I live in Portugal, right next to Spain, where the original Castile soap was created centuries ago! In your recipe I didn't understand why it reached such an exuberant trace. Is it an effect of the rice bran oil or the essential oils you used? Good luck with your book. I hope to get a copy.

Olive oil has gone way up in price here (Canada) it used to be about ten bucks but now the best sale price I can find is about fifteen, but rice bran oil from what I can tell is a specialty oil, I can get a teeny 350 ml bottle for $7.50 or so, though it looks like it's available on Amazon in variousstates of refinement for a bit less than olive oil... so since canola oil is $4 for 750 ml, I'm going to try substitutiing it for olive oil and I'm going to add 5% beeswax from my hives... if I can find a Canadian source for lye, I could call it an all Canadian batch! But this first time I'm going with 25% coconut oil... Thanks for the tutorial! I made my fifth batch last night (bay leaf infused olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and a little beeswax, using bay leaf infused flax gel), my first was with rosemary and flax gel and lavender, cedar and oregano oils, my second was the same recipe but without the rosemary, fragrance or flax gel, my third was olive oil, honey and 5% beeswax, and my fourth was pure coconut oil with peppermint essential oils. This is so much fun, but I have to lock the scented bars away in an unused room for the first week or they trigger my scent issues, even scents I normally have no problem with.
Thank you for this video. Will be making it tomorrow. Also, can’t wait for your book 🙂

Hi Elly, Thank you for sharing. I live in Chennai, India. Here olive oil is available, but very pricey. I have been making soaps recently and your videos are the best guidance to me. I wanted to make a soap using the oil trinity, but the olive seemed to bite my purse. I'm not a miser, but I really didn't want to invest a lot of money in a new hobby. Here rice bran oil is easily available and cost effective too. Thank you for the timely video. I would definitely try. As a beginner soap maker, I have a question for you. The cold process soap has to cure in the open place for a month. Am I right? The fragrances or essential oils I add evaporate within a week. When I use the soap, it doesn't smell anything or sometimes a very mild, faint trace of the original fragrance remains. How to solve this problem? I usually buy fragrance or essential oils from Amazon or Flipkart, once from a local perfumery. To be frank, I bought sample pack from online and I am not sure of the quality of the perfumery, though I paid a handsome amount for lavender and sandal fragrance. Do your soaps retain their fragrance after a month in the open air? Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Once again thank you for your wonderful service to the soap making community.

Morning Elly, I’ve been waiting for this video 😀, isn’t RBO just lovely , apart from the fast trace which always worries me a bit that it hadn’t emulsified correctly but oh my, it does make a beautiful soap doesn’t it. I love how it’s yellow when you pour but then it’s lightened right up when you unmould . I too struggled with the individual moulds and had some pockets/holes in my cute bee moulds but nothing too bad. Well done Elly, great video 👍
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
Thanks Jo! It's whiter without the orange and patchouli EO as well. They do make it more yellow! I think next time I'll wait for the lye solution to cool right down. That should slow down the trace more.

Hi Elly, I am new to soap making and your videos are really helpful. I made your earlier video of Castile soap with olive oil but found that it took a long time to trace and also almost 3 days to gel. Not sure if I did something wrong. Is it better to use individual small moulds for Castile soap as I found cutting the soap was not the easiest. One last question, is this soap safe for the face and body both? Sorry for all the questions and thank you again 🌸
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын

Thanks for the video! Rice bran oil is high in linoleic fatty acid, and conventional wisdom is to keep that low to avoid DOS. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking24 күн бұрын
Yes, the linoleic FA is higher than it is in olive oil, but still not drastically high I don't think. I think it's balanced by the high palmitic and oleic and somehow seems to be ok. It's very low in linolenic which is good. I've never had any DOS with these bars and I've stored one batch well over a year.

I managed to do an in-the-pot swirl, i wonder if its because i used other oils with it that it didnt seize so fast . Question: is it necessary to test the PH of the soap? If its calculated appropriately in soapcalc, is there a need? Thank you 😊
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
Hi, thanks for your kind words. Yes, if you use less RBO the soap won't trace as fast, there are many factors involved. And yes, I always test the pH of my soap - it's pretty important I think to know it's not lye heavy. I have made mistakes before with recipes that were calculated correctly, but I made a mistake making them 😬 kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnmrmoeKqJiAlZY

Hi Elly, lf the lye solution was made the day before, cooled overnight and added to room temperature RBO, would it trace slower or would the whole mixture be too cool to saponify?
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
I think that would be good to try! I still think it might trace a bit fast though. Olive oil is very slow tracing.

Thank you for replying, Elly! I successfully made your olive oil Castile soap last month. I'm going to cure it for 12 months. In the meantime, l thought I'd try the RBO Castile. I've made several of your other recipes, too, over the last year, and l have enjoyed every one of them. Thank you so much for freely sharing your recipes and knowledge. Such an enjoyable (and addictive! 😂) hobby. Best wishes from NZ

l made this soap in October with a brand new bottle of rice bran oil. Currently curing for 6 weeks but checked on it today. It's in a cool, dark, dry area of the house. Oh no, each bar has DOS! This is my first time experiencing this 😢. Can the soap still be used?

Thanks Elly!! Does it make sense to include some castor oil in this type of recipe? I know castile should be purely one oil but I was wandering.
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
Yes, you absolutely could! I just wanted to show how you can make this with RBO by itself. It's great with coconut too.

is there a way to make pure jojoba oil liquid soap? (no other oil ingredients- except for maybe olive) have you ever made cold process castile?
@anagoncalves3015Ай бұрын

Hi, thanks for that info! Rice bran oil is a notorious fast tracer. It has more saturated fats, including stearic acid, in it compared to olive oil :)

Hello, I made 2% Essential oil (Sandalwood) Sandalwood soap. Its been 2 days since i made the soap. PH level was around 8-9 on the 2nd day. My eyes burnt today(3rd day) when i applied it to my face. Question - What was the reason of Eye burning/irritation? Was it the Sandalwood essential oil or incomplete curing. Thank you in advance. Love from India.

It's really important that you cure your soap for at least a month before you use it! I would also say try not to get the soap in your eyes! But it could also be that your essential oil is not skin safe? Check with the supplier that it's suitable for soap making.

Hi Elly, great video, can you give percentage of Orange to Patchouli essential oils, would it be 90% to 10%? thanks x

Wondering if there is an alternative to lye? This is my first video. It certainly looks easy. Any suggestions for molds other than soap molds. Something I might have at home? Metal mint containers, plastics, baking pans and cut the soaps? Thank you!
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
Hi Leslie, no alternative to lye unfortunately, but yes, you can use all kinds of things for moulds! Milk cartons are good, as in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/onPGXpeNhtJ5f68 and silicone loaf pans are good too.

Aloha Elly from Hawai’i. What would happen if expired but not rancid olive oil was used for soap making? What if it was rancid? I’m wondering if it matters since it goes through a chemical change in the saponification process. Thank you for all you share :)
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
I use old oils all the time, because I hate to waste them. Oil rancidity can increase the free acids in oils, and can speed up trace, and can make your soap smell a bit rancid, but it's up to you. If I were selling my soap I would not use old oils! But for home use, it's your choice :)

Hi Elly . Weird question but where do you get your white dish sponge from? I’ve seen it on the another video you posted. I just buy from woolworth or coles but I don’t like any of them 😅

I get them from Daiso :)

Thank you for this video. What about slime? Castile soaps are known to become slimy with use. Have you had that experience?
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
This is not slimy like olive oil soap is. Much better I think, due to the saturated fats in RBO.

Thank you! I actually have an excess of rice bran oil at the moment so it’s perfect. Soap calc gives very off calculations for cleansing, bubbly, iodine, and INS. Is this still okay?
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
Soap calc is just a guide. This video explains how you can evaluate your recipes and make your own choices about it kzbin.info/www/bejne/jF7YdYOfm9VmpJI

Hi Elly what ph is good for skin ? And is rice bran good for skin?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking4 күн бұрын
Hi, well a dermatologist will tell you soap is too alkaline for skin, but it's a personal choice I think. It is higher pH than the skin. Rice bran oil is quite highly processed, but it makes a nice gentle soap that is not drying.
@kendo2377Ай бұрын
Ran bran oil where I live is at the same price point as olive oil. I've cut olive oil from all of my soaps and switched to avocado oil. The bar results are the same as far as I can tell.
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
Yes, that would be good. Avocado oil is expensive here too. In terms of a single oil soap, RBO is great. Not sure how avocado would go by itself, but great for blending absolutely!

Hi Elly. I have been warned that rice bran can lead to DOS. I made a soap with canola and rice bran and it got DOS very quickly. Can you share your thoughts on this?
@EllysEverydaySoapMakingАй бұрын
I haven't ever experienced DOS with my RBO soap, and one batch I stored for almost a year. I guess it depends on how fresh the oil is, and soap storage conditions too.
