As a casual Melty Blood fan, I can attest that something that made OG Melty Blood so amazingly resilient is that it was a beautiful and solid fighting game that any potato Dell Optiplex on your local elementary school running Windows XP 32 bit can play it. The Melty Blood FGC is so grassroots that it spawned from a pile of grass cowshit.

I'm sad I just saw this but a friend and I are the ones that ran those tournaments by the gazebo for a year and change. Towards the end of the run we had people traveling from Singapore, Canada, and other parts of the world to play in front of that snapple machine, and eventually in the actual gazebo. We stopped running it because the city wouldn't supply electricity even when we bought the permits for everything, effectively killing it off. There's a deeper history to that 'bathroom' image that goes way past the *really* tired memes but I'm humbled you touched on how hard the devotion is of the community, so thank you. Subb'ed :D
