Now, what I’ll write later is my personal thoughts on this topic, so I ask not to take my explanation seriously. Why must fighting games have lore? It is difficult to present a design without the background/history of said design. It’s like showing you Scorpion without telling you what he is, and never pushing his story further, which makes his design stagnant and boring. Fanbase sometimes contributes to the lore part with all the theories, that’s why Fnaf is still around and kicking. But why is their lore so big? It’s simple: when the main representatives of this game’s world are fighting in arenas, which are the only known showcases of said world, it’s easy for creators to run wild with all the possible explanations.

Nanaya is more complex than split personality. It's like if Nanaya is a computer, then Tohno is exactly the same computer, except Tohno doesn't have administrator permission to open some files/programs while Nanaya have that permission.
