This was one of my favorite early 2000s horror flicks! I believe the reason it didn't get enough buzz/love is because America wasn't ready for main character to be black and a woman in a horror film. Had this come out today, the response would have been totally different.

The real terror is that this is actually happening right now as we speak in many facilities where patients have no voice. In the beginning Miranda was your good but typical psychologist. They have a tendency to become blinded by their range of knowledge and refuse to look at anything outside of that scope. The longer they've been in practice the more rigid and cynical they become. Miranda's husband had two faces, he was able to maintain his composure because he was getting his bloodthirsty needs met in secret. I absolutely loved Penelope in this role, she couldnt out right tell Miranda or be disbelieved. The best humbling comes when you find out for yourself. What two sick men, a cop and high ranking psychologist who have the power of their word. How many unlivings have been blamed on self unlivings? More than we think! The messed up part about this is that they would still try to keep these women locked up even after all this was proven and revealed if it was real life. Once the dead know you're tapped in, you never stop fully seeing or feeling them.

Agreed with this being an underrated gem and this is one of my favorite horror movies. Its extremely dark but at the same time it needed to be for the subject matter. I honestly feel what they were going for with this movie is that watching this movie is what it must feel like for women who have been abused and no one will listen to or believe them. They are told they are crazy, they are gaslit (and very appropriate the villain dies from a fire after accidentally opening a gas valve). Moral of the story, believe women.

Crazy Fact : While filming gothika Robert Downey Jr broke Halle Berry’s arm while filming a scene where his character has to grab a belligerent Halle and hold her down while in the midst of the scene Halle said she felt her arm go the wrong way and how everyone onset heard it pop and how she knew it was broken right then and there and how production and filming was halted for eight weeks due to her recovery every since then Halle Berry has not spoken or even mentioned anything about Robert she even stated in an interview that she doesn’t recall him apologizing to her. But according to the NZ Herald, Downey Jr. apologized for the incident after the fact. “It was an accident, I’m sorry if she’s still upset,” he said. “I did everything I had to do to keep my side of the street clean. I wish her the best.”
