An Unedited Sound Design Session
Today I'm bringing you all an unedited sound design session on the Arturia Microfreak! Some of you might know that I'm not the biggest fan of sound design, but I'm trying to change that. One of the best ways (for me, anyway) to do that, is by sitting down and forcing myself to learn through experience. So, if you've got any advice, tips, or tricks for me, please leave them in a comment below! Enjoy the video :)

At the very least, you stepped out of your comfort zone and DID some sound design. That's exactly what you were doing... "What if I add this to this? What if I turn this up?" That's how you experiment and if you didn't happen upon some awesome, useable sounds in the vid, realize you were only doing it for around 13 minutes. I don't know many people that can come up with something they like to hear, let alone save as a patch in 13 minutes. Keep the realistic vids coming, even with the mistakes. Oh, and keep doing more with the Microfreak because guess who just got one? (This guy!) ;)

There is no such thing as "bad sound design" because the process is experimental and subjective. You create what sounds interesting to you. Thanks for sharing this with all of us.

Keep at it man! Being along for your journey as you discover new things and expand what you can do is a big reason why I keep coming back every single day. Thanks for the video - it was a neat dive into what the workflow on the Microfreak is like 👍 Also, really liked the sound once the unison started kicking in!

You're not bad at sound design. Seemed like you were holding yourself to a pretty high standard - sound design can be a slog even when the results are great. Something I like to do? Start with a sequence, and design your sound as you play! If it's an arp type sequence with lots of steps, you can hone in how you want the envelope to sound as you'll hear it reset a lot. If you're making a pad or something, do a live record of a simple chord change and design it as you go!

Nice job. To help you get into sound design, try approaching this from another direction. Try starting with a preset patch and tweak the sound from there. Experiment along the way to creating a PLAYABLE sound, not just a sound you like to hear. I find when I aim for playable sounds in design, I have better direction and great results.

Also…near the end it sounded like R2-D2 getting cussed out by his mother. I thought it was awesome!

Something to note, when you change type, the other new oscillator knobs will move to a “default” on my Microfreak, so you have to reset the orange knobs to match the previous positions so things don’t hit the “modulation ceiling or floor” I hope that makes sense

You should give yourself more credit. I mean there were some really useable fat sounds in this 13 minute session, plus you had fun! There is also the opportunity for happy accidents where one sound you find can inspire you to make a whole new song. So do not feel bad about not editing this video, this inside look is all it takes!

Seeing that your not a fan of sound design why do you always start from a blank slate? While it’s a great to start from scratch to learn a synth there’s nothing wrong with modifying presets. The originality is electronic music comes mainly from how sounds are played and arranged.

All sounds start as crap. It’s why it’s called ‘design’. It’s a process of shaping and twisting. Sometimes you start that with a sound in mind, and other times you just twiddle till it starts making you smile.
