I really don't think the 1920s was a good setting for the first black disney princess. It avoids the well known racism of the 60s, but drastically downplays how this time was even worse /and/ was even closer to chattel slavery being legal. Disney likes to act like the "princess from long ago" is a complex rule, when in reality that's when most of the stuff they swiped from public domain took place. Justice for Tiana!

This is one of the Disney films I have always liked a lot despite it's flaws. Also as a Latin American, I feel the same with Encanto as "all we got" because for once we have a Latin American story that isn't Mexico. I'm not even Columbian (I'm Puerto Rican and Dominican) but it was such a breath of fresh air that we see a different culture depicted in the main stream.
@whiteasparagus43319 ай бұрын
Honestly as a colombian, even if i don’t like encanto that much i will always appreciate it because its one of the few media that depicts Colombian culture in a good light, series like narcos have given a very bad image of Colombia like the only quality we have is doing drugs n shit, I was so tired of always seeing gringos talk about Colombia when it came to Pablo Escobar and narcos, we definetly need more movies like that because I love my culture and I hate seeing foreigners being xenophobic towards us because of outdated stereotypes:(

At least Tiana was out here pioneering the "Black gal with reptile friend" trope and paved the way for April O'Neil from Rise of the TMNT and Lunella from Moon Girl. I don't know why that's an recurring trope, but it really does seem that in animation the reptilian community shows Black women and girls more love than people. Princess and the Frog is one of the Peak "love the protagonist but not the story they're in" stories. It's bothersome that Princess and the Frog relies so much on surface level aesthetics despite how Tiana's character and the premise of the story is still steeped in New Orleans politics and history. Tiana being loosely based on a real person who gets erased to be more "family friendly" while also making the white comfort characters and making the villain the Black Vodou practitioner with the real history of the practice being stolen and commodified was...a choice. You could make a whole video on that topic alone and how the story frames it. One of the best scenes in the movie is when Facilier sees the white dad dude handing out a huge wad of cash for a paper, a display of how frivolous he is with his wealth and power. The movie itself never really does anything to criticize this and if anything makes it worse by the fact that Facilier is the villain and the white comfort characters placed with Tiana are framed as good at at worst a little naive is wild. As you point out, New Orleans was a central portion of the Slave trade, so making one of its victims the villain while portraying one of its beneficiaries as largely benevolent and supportive is so nasty. There's a constant media history of Black works that deal with racism, misogynoir, etc but then feel the need to inject "good" white characters for people to easily project onto to watch racism from a distance. So much when they try to talk about some kind of bigotry they make it out where the comfort of white viewers is the central priority, so the bigots are either an easily identifiable single person with a million "good" white characters or we portray them as having been "tricked" and not knowing any better and needing to be educated by the Black cast. That was honestly a big part of my problem with the Owl House. A lot of the story feels like it tries to dip a toe in the issue like explicitly setting it in the 1920s US, the scene where Tiana is denied her loan specifically for being a Black woman, but then they also make sure it's as comfortable to white people as possible. Then add in all the points about Naveen and how much of an ain't shit man he was for her. Imagine if instead, Naveen was someone who went out and wanted to find a woman who loves him for who he is but keeps running into women who try to get with him for his wealth, which would give a compelling reason for why he's drawn to Tiana for her attitude. The story could have emphasized how Tiana is overworking herself to a detrimental degree. I feel it'd be sweet if she wears a headwrap because she doesn't properly care for her hair, and then you make it a romantic moment for Naveen where he does her hair for her to better illustrate why it's important for her to slow down a bit. It's such a weird case because Tiana is such an incredible protagonist who carries the movie, but she's stuck in such a frustrating and propagandized story.

@@PrincessLioness I can try. I kind of got the feeling in general that there's always an assumed innocence that comes with the white cast if that makes sense? Alador for instance was building weapons for a police state and only saw the error of his ways at the last minute. Yet they still make him out as more sympathetic because..he wants to be a better dad to his kids he's been abusing. It leans into the idea that colonialism happens without the colonizers realizing what's happening or that what they're doing is harmful. It would also often gets paired with the non-white cast either having their feelings ignored (i.e. nobody really caring or questioning how Willow feels about her bully joining the friend group) or how they're expected to constantly "teach" the people harming them to do and be better even in the face of violence (i.e. half the things Luz goes through). and like it's not a bad show but it does feel very white at times or like the non-white characters are still written for a white audience.

I don’t agree with the Naveen section at all 😔 the whole point in making him selfish at the beginning was to have him become a more selfless and worldly person at the end. He takes Tiana’s teachings abt cooking and mutual respect to heart, and in return he teaches her how to dance. He also saves Tiana from the hunters and strikes a deal with Charlotte to ensure Tiana gets her wish. He admires her dedication so much that by the end, he’s rolling up his sleeves to help finish building the restaurant! You’re right in that it wouldn’t make sense for Tiana to marry someone so selfish and naïve, but by the end of the movie, Naveen is neither of those things.
@malachibryan71779 ай бұрын
Exactly my thoughts, and to add on, Tiana wanting to stay with Naveen after the kiss with Lottie failed isn’t her giving up on her dream but her accepting that her what she Mama Odie was trying to teach her which was that while her fathers dream was something that mattered to him, his family mattered even more and that love he had for those around him is something she has in herself as well

Facts! I disagree. Like why they coming for my boy Naveen lol. It seems like they were criticizing his character, but like that's just him at the beginning? Characters shouldn't and wouldn't be perfect at the beginning, or they will be a flat character with no character development. If anything Tiana has a great prince, while Cinderalla, Snow White have princes with no personality. Naveen fully changes by the end. Even choosing to marry Lottie just so Tiana can get her dream, showing selflessness. He also is perfect for Tiana. Throughout the movie Tiana misses the point. That her dad ultimately just wanted her to have love and family. Once she fully realizes that is when everything else falls into place. Naveen garuntees that Tiana will not overwork and that she will enjoy life.

As a kids movie it’s fine, as a Disney Princess movie it’s a disgrace. My biggest problem is that Tiana doesn’t get the same treatment as the other princesses had, at least completely: a castle(she just gets a restaurant, idc if they slap Palace on it she can’t live there can she??) a romantic dance (she was a frog, it just looked so silly that I laughed, no little black girl wants to aspire to remake her dance as a frog) and an iconic dress(they showed it for freakin 5 seconds). However Charlotte had the castle(her amazing mansion) a dance(she was human and she even had a memorable enduring entrance) and an iconic dress(we see Charlotte in beautiful dresses the whole freakin movie!) she even had a crown! How is she a side character. Charlotte was the true princess, that’s what the movie was subliminally trying to say. Even if you look at certain scenes with Tiana and Charlotte , the frame intentionally places Charlotte front and center, while Tiana is slightly behind her, wearing duller colors while Charlotte’s are vibrant. I understand this was showing their personality dynamic, but this is Tiana’s movie. She deserved a lot more scenes of her human with the cute outfits and her to be in the limelight.

It felt almost like... Pandering? Like the movie was taking time to personally reassure me and I just... Hated that. Like by that time, I'd watched plenty stuff featuring and made for black folks, so it struck me as artificial in a way. It's been years now, but that's still not something I'm a huge fan of in the film. Tho I do understand that they didn't want little black girls to come away from the movie thinking the world was against them, it's supposed to be inspiring, so I can see why they'd go out of their way to show that she has folks on her side. Maybe it's the emphasis? Others have articulated this much better by now, I'm sure. Anyway, this is my first vid of yours I've watched, and I had a good time! I do love how open you are about your format just being about explaining the film and having fun with it! And it also annoyed me how people were complaining about Lottie being not as major of a character as Tiana considering A LOT of films and shows would cast white leads and a "black best friend character" and a lot of them were either treated poorly by other characters or they barely were in these films and TV shows (ie. Rocky Blue (even though Zendaya herself is biracial) and Ivy from good luck charlie. Like some people act a fool when the black/POC characters are the leads and the white characters are the side characters (or when black/POC movies don't have white characters at all). My “script doctor” idea for the live action is NOT having Tiana turn into a frog when she kisses Naveen, but have her shrink down Thumbellina style instead. The moment she sees Naveen as a human followed by the immediate double take of the scale of the room would be amazing. The couple would be visibly human but would still have a very real incentive to get back to normal. Tiana’s dress would be made of literal nature which would then turn into fabric upon her transformation back to full-size. Merchandising wise it means a large part of the movie where they would have been frogs would suddenly be Borrowers/secret world of arrietty style play sets and dolls where the dolls are 1:1 scale with the child playing with the doll.

I also found her white homegirl annoying and unnecessary. The villain scared me sm but he was the most interesting character in the movie for me and I wish Disney spent more time creating a believable "beef" between him and Tiana. He could've been her uncle who was shunned and outcast by the family and the community for being a Voodoo practitioner and not because that's bad but because it made it harder for them to blend in and assimilate into society. He could've came back for revenge or something. All I'm saying is that they should've put in a more effort to make this story more interesting and they didn't have to turn Tiana into a frog for most of the movie.

The problem is Tiana doesn’t really change… Naveen does, and only cause of Tiana. Tiana is validated in everything… I felt like Mama Odie was trying to instill in her the message of “work smarter, not harder” but it kinda got lost. I feel like it would have been a much better movie if: Tiana kisses Naveen and literally nothing happens and Naveen finds out Tiana is not a princess. So we take a page from Miss Congeniality and Ratatouille and Naveen becomes a sort of tiny mentor figure to Tiana so she can win the title of Princess of Mardi Gras: Naveen can kiss Tiana when she wins, and Tiana would get a giant cash prize to open her restaurant. Naveen basically gives Tiana all sorts of pointers in royal etiquette which makes her a fearsome competitor and pits her against her best friend Lottie. In the end, Tiana gets second place (Cause it’s 1920s New Orleans) and Naveen abandons Tiana to go kiss Charlotte, who is crowned the winner. Tiana is distraught cause she won’t get her restaurant and she grew to care about Naveen. Lottie kisses Naveen and it doesn’t work, and Tiana and Naveen both realise the voting/judging was rigged against Tiana, and she was the real winner. But by then it’s too late and Naveen is stuck as a frog. Resigned to his fate, Naveen helps Tiana (maybe Lottie can help too, cause she wanted to win fairly) reveal the judges’ rigging and Tiana is crowned princess of Mardi Gras. Tiana offers to kiss Naveen but he refuses, saying that , even if it worked, after abandoning Tiana, perhaps he deserves to be a frog. Tiana reminds Naveen that he came through in the end and that she cares about him and needs him to play music at her new restaurant , kissing him and turning Naveen into a human. When she was crowned, the clock reset! In this scenario Lottie wouldn’t start out as Tiana’s close friend but more of an acquaintance . As the competition between them heats up, they grow to respect each other. Their friendship is cemented when Lottie realizes she won unfairly and helps Tiana gain her crown. Lottie grows to see Tiana as worthy of the crown , and Tiana sees that beneath ghr spoiled brat exterior, Lottie has a strong moral compass. Lottie has to earn friendship in this scenario, which makes it more believable.

I respectful disagree with the Naveen section. I mean Naveen not starting off perfect, was purposeful. Him and Tiana brought balance for each other. Naveen showed Tiana how to live, and Tiana showed him how to work. Naveen was willing to marry Lottie for Tiana. Did he start of perfect. No? But that's what makes his character development even more special. Saying Tiana needed a man that was already perfect, I disagree with that. Tiana needed to learn two essential things. To love and to live. Naveen gave that to her. That's why at the crux of film when the Shadow man offers her dream, she refuses "My daddy didn't have what he wanted. He had what he needed" which was love. Naveen was that. Naveen is the perfect person to make sure Tiana doesn't overwork and that she enjoys life.
One thing I did sort of notice is that all the other Princesses married a prince with wealth, but part of the reason Naveen wanted to marry a Princess was because he was broke and he wanted to gain wealth back. Now, I am not exactly sure if Naveen is black or not, some people have said he's Indian or something but I think it sorta plays into the trope that black women are constantly with bums or in "struggle love relationships" and that rich / well off men (of any race) do not desire black women when that is most definitely false.

Im not sure how to take this, but there are 2 Disney characters based on Louis Armstrong. They both want to be human. Louis the gator, and King Louis from the Jungle Book

Nah you right. I'm extremely annoyed that the only Louis Armstrong drag and drops are ANIMALS who "dream of being human"

Omg the black women and cartoons thing. Like the biggest watchers of anime are black men but black girls love and need cartoons. It’s hard to be a black girl especially in poverty. People don’t things girls in general watch cartoons yet don’t realize women and girls make most of the cartoon fandom

Finally finished thie video!! Great breakdown!!! I was busy when you dropped this wanted to watch sooner. Last comment haha I had to say something: didn't rapunzel force flynn to take her to see the ceremony thing with the lights or else she says she'll turn him into the authorities and then he falls in love with her on some stockholm syndrome sh*t kinda like when robert downey jr sided with the killers in natural born killers. His character literally forgot he was a reporter lol, they were in a potential prison revolt situation tho but still very messed up. I haven't seen tangled since high school so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm missing a plot detail or 2

So hype about this vid! I’ve always loved this movie but it is so flawed if you lean in to inspect it even a little bit. My names Tiana and I saw the promo displays at disneyworld before the trailers were released - I was so excited. But the best part about this movie is Tiana. The passion and drive and no-nonsense honestly moves me even to this day. I am a white person so I can’t & wont speak about the actual issues, but even the first time I watched this you can realllyyyyy feel them dancing around the issues. It feels heavily revisionist. I didn’t expect anything awful or harrowing or deep but the avoidance is truly felt upon watching. Also naveen is somehow like a jerk but bland at the same time. What if he was more like Tiana? What if he was the opposite of Tiana, but not a bratty prince - maybe like tramp from lady and the tramp? Like a story about Tiana and this “I live in the moment enjoy life I don’t need a job” laid back kinda guy and they teach each other balance. Or they could’ve done that same thing with her friends they show in the beginning. He does nothing that would make her actually like him. He just likes her very suddenly but rightfully, and that’s his whole arch. The writers were just like OH NO WE NEED ROYALTY SOMEWHERE!! Idk it’s fun, it’s fine, good songs, some good characters, but hit with a couple shots of Tabasco and it’s the bees knees

Great critique Harriyanna, I really liked hearing your thoughts on this movie. I hope the new Tiana series fixes all these problems you rightfully pointed out. Personally, it could have been really cool if Tiana were a princess from the beginning, as long as she got to stay human. Didn't anyone working on the movie think about how making the first Black Disney princess a frog for most of her movie would come across as offensive? Also, the New Orleans setting is nice, but maybe it should have been set during modern day. If you don't mind me asking, what are your thoughts on movies based on Disney rides, like Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean?

Lovely breakdown on the characters and movie. I just thought Naveen's idea to marry someone to take care of himself is just plain stupid. He was expecting a princess to take care of him? Plus there are zero princesses in New Orleans, it's a state with a government not royalty. It's odd he went to New Orleans to find a princess. That is a huge plot hole. Also, why didn't he try to get a job/work? It's just not a smart plan but he's a idiot so that's why he went for it. Naveen never should have tricked Tiana either, she looked like a princess then but it was wrong for him to do.

I lived in Eugene Oregon for a while, which already has a shady history regarding black populations and pro slavery movements. But nowadays most people who live there (primarily white people) fancy themselves super progressive. Generally they miss the mark on actual equality and inclusivity. Many people mistook me for being black, im not, im Hispanic, and was generally white passing at the time. There was so little diversity in the middle school i went to the only black kid didn't know i was Hispanic

I only saw Princess and the Frog once on DVD around when it came out so I'm a little hazy on some of the plot details. So Naveen was basically on his Coming to America but without the charm/swag Prince Akeem had in that movie?

Charlotte was the typical southern bell And Tiana was your hard working black women in a society were they were not equal if Disney would’ve done a movie in an older era she would’ve been a slave And Lottie would have been forced or tamed into women hood and her dad sell her In a way to her husband. And bootleg alcohol would be a thing in this era so Lottie’s dad could be getting Rich form that too. Tiana realistically, would’ve been married off to someone and probably had a hard time to have her business due to her husband or society.
